Ahh, a real blast from the past. I vividly remember as a schoolby travelling up to Wembley that night on a series of buses and trains to support my hero Ole Olsen, with my big home-made Ole Olsen banner (an old bedsheet and two old broom handles) and my air horn! I remember the first time I saw Ole Olsen race, like it was yesterday. It was 1972, my first season in speedway, Olsen was the reigning World Champion and brought his Wolverhampton team to Plough Lane for a League encounter with the ‘Dons’. I’d be warned that the ‘Great Dane’ was a bit special but what they didn’t tell me was that Mount Olympus was clearly somewhere west of Copenhagen! His winged boots should have given me a clue as Olsen was nothing short of a speedway god: a classic riding style, awesome speed, other-worldly passing skills, daring, brave and completely cool; no other rider even came close to him. He was on another planet to the rest, posting an immaculate 18 point maximum. Olsen was pure ‘box office’ throughout his career and I just loved watching him race. He became my favourite rider and I was lucky to see him race all over the country and abroad. To this day, all I want for Christmas is a pair of Ole’s ‘winged boots’! Ole, Ole, Ole, Oi, Oi, Oi! 😀
I still have a pair of those classic red Daytona boots.Yes, they were sharp and Our top boys here in the states (The Bast Bros, Scwartz, and Penhall )sported them and were all groomed by Ivan, Ole, and Barry.They, with the help of local promoter Harry Oxley and 1937 World Champion Jack Milne, were instrumental in starting Speedway up over here back in 1968, and made regular visits back with the coveted USA vs The World meetings. It was big stuff for this 10 year old in 1974 and 1975 seasons. Ah, to be young.
I was at this final with good friends,some no longer with us,but have great memories of the night! A tremendous year for us Coventry fans with Olsen world champion and the Bees winning the league.Great times and unbelieveable that Brandon is no more!!!
I’m pretty certain they showed this on the television in Australia when I was a kid. I can still remember thinking that this is what it’s all about. Wembley. Championship of the world. Seemed so near yet so far from the ol’ Sydney Showground where I watched some of these same blokes with my own eyes. A magic time.

Amazing night, I was stood on the back straight, just coming out of the bend, was the most memorable night in all the events I attended back then. My Aunt lost her hearing on one side due to an air horn wielder behind her, and her voice was lost too :)
Hi Martyn, Watched this so many times now. Brings back huge memories. I was there as a 12 year old. I distinctly remember being outside the doors to the pit tunnel with my family before the meeting. We were talking with Ivan's son for over an hour. Met Dave Jessup and Michael Lee. Also Barry Sheene which was a surprise. He was a gent, but had a bad limp and looked in pain, tough guy. The Wembley Finals are ingrained in my memory banks and i replay them often. I don't really remember the final when Barry Briggs lost his Finger much, but i do remember we drove there from Edinburgh in an old Austin Cambridge with column change gears. 9 Pints of Oil to get there and back. My Sister and I slept along the Leather Bench Seat in the back. My Dad was elated that Ivan won that year, his favourite rider. When we got back home my Dad went straight to work again as we were poor. Special times when life was hard, no fast food in those days, things at your instant disposal, Sat Navs, Mobiles etc etc. We probably just had basic sandwiches and a flask, which was the norm in those days. I was 15 and there supporting Simmo. Fantastic evening and was great apart from Ole winning..... I travelled with my parents too, from Weymouth, went all over the country supporting the Wildcats and Pirates. Love Speedway and still attend Wimborne Rd frequently. Thanks for watching.
I was at this final too, with my home made red and white top hat, it still gives me goosebumps 40 odd years later, what a great rider Ole was and so gorgeous, I am still a huge fan even now, he held all three world titles in 79, The World Championship, The World Pairs and The World Team Cup, does anyone know if this feat has been equalled by any subsequent rider
I had a gimongous crush on Our Ole in the 70s, so beautiful and I was a member of his fan club, I even got a reply when I sent him an email Thanks so much Ole for all your brilliant riding for us Bees fans
You can almost smell the atmosphere. There was something about Wembley that made the atmosphere unique. I can remember walking around the track at 7.30am in the early 70s, having just got off the supporters’ bus from Glasgow in the morning of the European final. I wish I’d kept the programme as I can’t remember the year. Might have been 1970 or 71? It was a misty morning in an empty stadium and I can remember the hairs on the back of my neck standing up! I can remember Ole beating Ivan in his clash during the meeting.Great video Martin as always.
Can't remember the occasion but I saw Ole score a brilliant 12 points at Owlerton in the 70's but an engine failure certainly cost him overall victory. According to the programme notes the following week it was a £5 component that had let him down.

I grew up in Southern California watching the tighter track specialist and with Ivan ,Barry,and Ole's help, the sport grew to be very popular in the 70's and 80's. as a 9 year old Motocross rider I always wanted to race speedway but Pop could only afford the 1st Motocross bike and weekends at the MX Parks. We had some special events at Ascott on 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile events in the '70's that were breath taking. The Boys would cut bleach bottles in half and install on the bars for hand guards to protect from the flying rocks @ very high speeds as they would run the Long Track 2 speed gear boxes. I remember the '74 & '75 U.S.A. vs the World Matches with Ivan, Ole, Barry,Michael Lee, Egon Mueller, John Pope, Former Australian World Champ Ronnie Moore (51 years of age at the time !) & Swedish World Champion Anders Michanek ? I am getting dementia so please forgive me for the name escapes me but not the rider nor event.They would come over and compete against a U.S. team consisting of Mike and Steve Bast(U.S. legends),Bruce Penhall, Bobby Scwartz, Bill Cody, Dubb Farrell, Scott Sivage, and Jeff Sexton.Possibly Mike Caruso as well.(please forgive me if I'm leaving anyone out on either side, I'm going solely on slighted memory) There is a famous picture of Ivan coming out of turn 4 hooking up (but in full control) taking home a heat win ahead of 7 time U.S. Champion Mike Bast that was taken by my friend and youth rider Mike Bloom who was 12 at the time I believe. These men were Gods to me and every Thursday night at our local track Irwindale(Now a Budweiser Beer Factory smh) was the highlight of my week with the roar of the engines that could actually be heard from my home about 7 miles away reminiscent of P-51 WW2 fighter planes when 4 in a heat or up to 8 in a Handicap Race, the smell of Methanol,Castor oil, and Nitro mixed in the fuel(@ that time was legal here in the states) would cause your eyes to burn slightly with pleasure and was the scent of pure joy. The Rider seen in the 1978 World Final, Scott Autry was The first modern day rider to go overseas to compete on British Shores,followed by Ron Preston, the late Denny Pyatt, Booby Swartz, and then the Moran Brothers, Sam Ermolenko, followed by Greg Hancock and Billy Hamill,as well as 10 time U.S. Champion Billy Janniro, and others respectfully. Crowds have thinned, and too the level and riders that brave the trip over to Europe. The latest hopes now being Luke Becker and Broc Nicol, both sons of speedway riders.We have a few other talented young men racing here and it's just a matter of talent, desire, and willingness to sacrifice Sunny California life and being able to adapt to the larger ,faster, and much higher competitive tracks in the U.K and eventually Sweden, and Poland. I, cannot for the life of me understand how this amazing sport has not flourished and achieved the success it had in the 70's and 80's and eventually surpassed it. I really love the sport more than any other. The way the boys in the leagues,and the G.P.'s are going is just amazing and with the lay down engines and straight back sections the bikes are quick and hooking up so well and the riding levels are at time acrobatic and amazing. My first Speedway race watched was at Weymouth in 1974, I was hooked the moment I got shale in the face from being stood on the 2nd bend at the Wessex Stadium, the great thing is I still love Speedway as much in 2020 as in '74 and go to as many meetings as possible.

I'm 55 now (WOW) and yes, the love for it is absolutely unwavering.I find myself when going online, first thing is straight to the SGP site and then a quick visit to the BSPA page. I don't look to much @ my local U.S. Speedway as I'm mostly interested in the big stage. No slight on the U.S. scene. I think it is because I miss riding and it's kind of a bittersweet thing I suppose.Still have my bikes and gear and never intended to stop, but the years are flying by amazingly fast and it is surreal actually if not demoralizing and frightening. The older I get the faster the weeks and months fly by. It's as if I've been propelled into some wormhole and time has been bended and accelerated. Sure would love to be over in England this spring as Nicki and Jason Crump are back ! So gutted about Greg calling it a day, but you have to understand and respect his decision of family first for obvious reasons. I am proud of Greg in every possible way.I will miss those lightning starts.Starting to get that itch for the season right about now.The new Champion is something special and Leon and Emil made it fun. We know TW is a proud warrior and will be hunting with all guns a blazing.I love all the boys racing and wish them all a safe and fun 2020. Think last years GP series was one of the best albeit Woofy not in the running. My nearest club Poole have dropped a league for 2020 so will have to travel to Swindon to see NP or JC come up against Doyley in the League, a great reason to travel though. Went to Cardiff and always enjoy the Pairs at Somerset the night before, every year a great weekend. My beloved Weymouth Speedway last ran in 2010 where I was Clerk of the Course for 8 Seasons, loved it, I'm just an avid supporter now, sat in the stands taking in the atmosphere and smell and cheering on the Pirates. Nice to chat, and enjoy the upcoming season Martyn
Some of these riders , including Barry Briggs, made out to South Africa in the '70's. Alan Ford Stadium in Durban was my local. Was very tight. Speedway continued years later at the Kings Park Stadium ( under Buddy Fuller) , the longest track in S.A. in the '80's. This made for faster riding coming of the apex of the banked ends I was fortunate to watch Speedway in Pool during my visit to the U.K. in 2018. The bikes have changed over the years and so is the style of riding.
Dave Jessup would've been a World Champion had he not suffered appalling mechanical luck with his bikes. In almost every World Final he competed in his machine let him down.
My most disappointing night of speedway even now. My Idol Ivan knocked off in his first heat on the first time I had ever seen him ride live. In fairness he wasn't quick that night............and poor Dave Jessup :(

I am a Brit living in USA, Las Vegas and used to be a huge speedway fan at Poole from 1978 - 1982 and speedway was HUGE back then. What has happened to speedway that it has fallen out of favor to a very niche sport? I know there are probably a number of reasons but what happened?
I was there that night, and Jessup was the best rider there. If it hadn't been for the engine failure in his first ride, he would've been world champion. Damn shame.
heat 4 although I admired ivan greatly his cheating tactics at the tapes must have infuriated his rivals, and he wasn't going fast enough when leading ,

I used to watch the Coventry bees,Ole Olsen was their top racer. The Ipswich witches had Ivan Mauger,as their top racer. 1976 .brilliant racing sport.

Notice the difference between this era and today ... back then there was no corporate logos taking up 99.9% of advertising space.

Dave Jessup would've been a World Champion had he not suffered appalling mechanical luck with his bikes. In almost every World Final he competed in his machine let him down.
My most disappointing night of speedway even now. My Idol Ivan knocked off in his first heat on the first time I had ever seen him ride live. In fairness he wasn't quick that night............and poor Dave Jessup :(

I am a Brit living in USA, Las Vegas and used to be a huge speedway fan at Poole from 1978 - 1982 and speedway was HUGE back then. What has happened to speedway that it has fallen out of favor to a very niche sport? I know there are probably a number of reasons but what happened?
I was there that night, and Jessup was the best rider there. If it hadn't been for the engine failure in his first ride, he would've been world champion. Damn shame.

heat 4 although I admired ivan greatly his cheating tactics at the tapes must have infuriated his rivals, and he wasn't going fast enough when leading ,
According to Ivan himself, his engine was dying so he was going to be passed anyway.
