  • How to perform a parasitic draw test. We show you how to perform a parasitic draw test using the power probe Hook without pulling fuses. Dead batteries could be a drain and not the battery its self, following these steps will save you from misdiagnosing a battery problem saving you time and money.

Hey there Dr Rob The Car Doctor/chief Surgeon here at IAC and I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to show me how to use my PPH to test for those tricky intermittent draws on vehicles! I also have your Power probe and appreciate all the features you have put into this diagnostic tool as well!
In closing, Thank You for providing us diagnostic tools to help us diagnose and repair Today's Crazy Complex Vehicles! DRTCD over and out... :)

Good job Jeff! I'm glad you stressed the importance of providing an alternate battery feed to the vehicle while connecting the Power Probe Hook. Some folks attach their "jump box" to the alternator output post or the under-hood (positive) jump post instead of the DLC.

I have a question when you perform that test with the power probe hook ain't the light on the hook causing a draw it self? Also ain't that light can cause the battery to drain over night if you leave it hook up?

I am using my Hook right now for this same test on a 1991 Corvette that the owner says the battery will go dead overnight. So far a .012 amp draw for 2 hours. With the key in the ignition the draw goes to .257 amp. I think I found his problem...

I have got a problem on my 1989 Toyota Cressida, I performed the test as per the procedure and removed fuses one by one but the reading on my multimeter did not drop as it stayed on 12.45 ma. When I checked on the positive terminal of the battery I found that the thick white and red stripe wiring was connected directly to the positive battery terminal. I removed it and the voltage dropped to 0.03 ma.My problem is that I am wondering where must this wiring be connected then.

Greetings friend! Hey I want one of these tools but folks are saying that its ginormous and not quick enough to even read a turn signal. A turn signal is where a test light is really nice because there you just want to see the thing blinking.

My 2007 Cadillac Escalade ESV is killing me with current parasitic draws, no technician seems to have the true well to find it, I am trying to learn by myself and find it, and I'll highly appreciate any help in this regard. I love the way you've explained the process,

I have a 2007 BMW 328Xi - The Battery in this vehicle MUST BE PROGRAMMED by BMW otherwise the car will NOT RUN, therefore if I "disconnect" my battery and then try to "re-connect" it the car will not work and will need to be "re-programmed", If I purchase the Power Probe III or IV and use a Jump Pack connected to the OBDII or whatever that port was you reffered to, will this protect my BMW Battery from having to be re-programmed? If Yes, Ill purchase this.

A voltage drop reading should go from the battery to where the circuit is to be tested, testing voltage drop across a fuse will only determine if the fuse is blown.
