I loved that you focussed on artists of the past, and what they chose to do in their art, then focussing on your thinking and choosing before making your art.
Thank you, Jess. A fabulous lesson about what the artist art needs to do, before what they do becomes their art.

I really like how the flat brush study looks more abstract and the round brush study looks more realistic, even though you basically used the same colors, medium and object. Art is so cool! I wish my paintings looked more like what I see in my head than something my 5-year-old self would draw. You make it look so easy!

We often overlook the versatility of the humble Round, considering it was the only brush head the masters had access to back in the day, and yet, look how much they were able to pull off with it.
It really is the OG paintbrush, and so gets my vote.

whenever I go out into nature to draw trees I always say to the tree "Hello friend'. When I'm done I thank my model of the day with an affirmation of gratitude toward the tree and I might splash them with a bit of water as an offering. After watching this video I t I want to get some of both types of brushes and see what comes. I like them both! 😊🧡🙏

This was so helpful as I had never thought about what brush I used could influence my painting style so much. Seeing the side by side paintings and how they turned out, explained things visually much more clearly than any oral explanation ever could have.
I have seen paintings before in art galleries etc. and after watching this video, it has now "clicked" with me how they painted things in certain ways that I just didn't realise before watching this.
Paintings that contained rocks, waterfalls, upright trees and angular cliff faces that stood out as solid, erect, and strong, while the leaves, pools of water with ripples, grasses and flowers swaying in the breeze, were all delicate, flowing, gentle.
This makes so much sense now, and also explains how to achieve them where only confusion was before. Thank you.

Hullo Jess, you are an amazing instructor and your videos are always a joy to behold, masterfully done!
I remember complaining to my grandma she would only give us one or two brushes to paint a painting with. I grew up using a number 12 round brush and occasionally I would get to use a 1 1/2 or 2 inch model or brush for skies or ocean. So I still use mostly brown brushes but I have all sorts now and use depending on my subject. Of course you make Mr. tomato look like a star with either brush and either style! Thank you for sharing your style with us and how do you apply the strokes with different brushes to the same subject. I have to say that I smile every day as I come into my kitchen and see your framed artwork. Thank you for sharing your paintings with us, I know that some people are not interested in prints, yet I have several different prints of your work and I doubt that I could afford originals! You are also sharing your art more widely in print form than original paintings! Thank you. I encourage everyone to stop by Jess’s website and find a treasure for themselves, wonderful selections and amazing prices too!

This is interesting to consider. I personally love when the brush strokes are left loose and visible. I tend to use mostly flat brushes but your painting on the right looks so cool and more textured. It records the energy that went into the painting. I do find I often forget to keep changing brushes when painting.
I wonder. Have you ever made a video about your camera, lighting setup etc. It would be cool to see how you make these videos as the production quality is so good. I know there are other aspects too, like your story telling skills.

Both are fabulous and seeing the side by side speed paint was fascinating. The one painted with the flat brush is so lively, I think, largely because it took you out of your comfort zone which forced you to really lean into your creativity. As I work in acrylic ink I probably use a round brush more than a flat brush, but it all depends on what kind of texture the work demands.

I generally prefer flat, particularly the angled ones, but small rounds and a good liner brush will always have a place among my supplies. This was a very interesting video to watch and certainly showcases the strengths of both brush types. I'd encourage you to try using flat brushes closer to the way you use your rounds, because they are more versatile than you might realise. I paint in a style much closer to the painting you made with the rounds, but I use flat brushes and end up with a similar result. All in all though, a very good comparison video.

It's interesting. There are elements of the flat brushes that I prefer and some of the round ones that I prefer. The stem with the flat brush (is it the brush or the colors used?) and the texture that you give to the tomato skin with the round. I also prefer the highlights on the tomato made with the round brush. Maybe it would be different with an even smaller flat brush? Just commenting to make myself really look at them too 🙂 I love this kind of comparison. What about different types of paints next? Oil, acrylic, gouache or watercolor? And the voice over really helps to follow your process!

14:01 I really hope you stay creative, don't forget to stay curious
I just got a third cat yesterday from the shelter, he is an orange tabby less than six months old - talk about curious I'd say I have much to learn from him about trying to get back in tune with that sense of curiosity I had when I was a child
I remember something else you said a while ago is I like to pretend I'm a child experiencing something for the first time - I still have much to learn from him - and from you of course
0:04 I find it very interesting how you say how marks convey feeling and how you have said before how color can be psychological - my art is music not visual but I think this child-like sense of creativity is universal and very contagious
As a response to this and everything else that happened to me today I will write a song for you using the most beautiful chords I know c maj7 to f maj7 - a kind of sound found in imagine by john lenon, yestersay once more by the carpenters, heres where the story ends by the sundays, and so far away by carole king - maybe one day I will play them for you ?
I'm the quiet boy in the corner taking it all in and projecting sounds from my instrument evoking emotion, color, beauty, and drama as a reflection of what I see and hear - what I play says what words never could, some times I think the violin is the only thing that really understands what I am feeling
i made a video of my new kitty to remember what he was like when I first got him if you search for a video titled "gordy dude" there is only one you will find, this is a youtube channel I actually created to explore experimental music I write and improvisation but I havent done very much with. The name of the channel is secret tribe a combination of secret garden a violin new age group and tribal tech a fusion band - a tribe so secret its only one multi-instrumentalist, a computer, various recording devices, midi synthesizer sequencing and arpeggiators, and 3 cats
Every day is a gift and a new chance to give back to the world which I think is what life is all about, the words of a loving nurturing parent and even as a teacher people need to hear it because a teacher can be just as influential on the life of a child - it takes a village - and with this in mind remind yourself to never underestimate what you have to give back to the world
I'd also be curious to know what determines the gender of a tomato
    ;p
