    ⭐ UPDATE !!! ⭐ Charles Schwab has changed their UI a bit and some Roth IRA rules have changed. I just posted a new video COMPLETELY UPDATED for 2024 on how to open, contribute to, and invest in a Roth IRA at Charles Schwab. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/U6rvCKkRZ4M/v-deo.html

    You're literally a life-saver. My dumb 21-year-old self thought that all you had to do was to put money into a Roth IRA and that it didn't require an additional step of investing. Thank you so much

    Solid information.
    Roth is incredible, especially for young people just starting out.... never pay taxes on those capital gains or dividends.
    Very powerful as well about no penalty on the withdrawals. Hopefully though that’ll be left in as long as possible for the full compounding effect.

    Firstly, I wanna thank you watching this video greatly inspired me to start saving my money and invest it. I have a question, however, why for a Roth ira buy ETFs and not regular Index funds?

    • @AlexQuinnYT
      @AlexQuinnYT  3 роки тому

      Thank you! Great question. I actually have a whole video on the differences between mutual funds, index funds, and ETFs: ua-cam.com/video/GSKaCMZOgu4/v-deo.html. ETFs can be (and usually are) structured as index funds. I like investing in index ETFs because there's usually no minimum and they trade like stocks (whereas mutual funds only trade at the end of the day). The differences are very, very small however, so either option is great!

  • @40laceration

    Is there a way to automatically invest the contributions each month or do you have to go and manually allocate the money each time?

    • @AlexQuinnYT
      @AlexQuinnYT  3 роки тому +5

      That is a great question that I didn't initially know the answer to, since I always make my investments manually. I did a bit of research and it looks like auto-investing is unfortunately only available to select Schwab mutual funds, not ETFs. If you do invest in an eligible mutual fund, you're able to set a fixed dollar amount that you want to invest each month. Go to the Research tab then select Mutual Funds at the top. You can search and filter on "Automatic Investment Plan" to identify the eligible mutual funds.
      From what I read, most brokerages are similar. The only brokerages I could find that allow for broader auto-investing are Robinhood and M1 Finance. Hope this helps!

    Do you think 60% SCHB 40% SCHF is a good starting point for a beginner Roth? Just opened one and maxed out for the year, debating between doing this split or similar or just throwing everything into SWYNX only thing is I don’t feel I need bond allocation right now, and the management fees of the target fund

    • @AlexQuinnYT
      @AlexQuinnYT  3 роки тому +1

      Good question! I generally don't think target funds are worth the management fees because you can get virtually the same exposure by picking a couple ETFs. I ended up with 60% SCHB and 40% SCHF based on a modified "3-fund portfolio" approach, excluding the third fund (bonds) because I don't think bonds are necessary at my age. I like having exposure to both the US and international markets, and you can play around with the percentages as you prefer, which you can't do with that target fund. I definitely think this is a good beginner option, but because the differences are so subtle, you can't go wrong with either approach.

    • @brandonduncan827
      @brandonduncan827 3 роки тому

      @@AlexQuinnYT awesome thanks so much! I saw somebody recommend somewhere to put maybe 5% into SCHE because SCHF only covers developed countries, is there a lot of benefit from this you think, or no?

    • @AlexQuinnYT
      @AlexQuinnYT  3 роки тому

      @@brandonduncan827 Totally personal preference! A little diversification is never a bad idea, I just prefer to keep things simple which is why I only stick to SCHB and SCHF. Emerging markets have relatively high volatility so if you don't mind the extra risk, they can be a fine addition. 5% isn't going to make-or-break your portfolio either way.

      Aw thank you - this video has had a lot of great feedback and I'm so glad people have found it helpful! Please let me know if there's any other topic you'd like for me to cover. :) I'm planning on making a video describing the differences between ETFs, index funds, and mutual funds soon.

      @@AlexQuinnYT that's great - one topic that may seem easy at face value, but challenging for beginners: changing brokerages. I am in the process of changing from an actively manages IRA with one company and changing to Schwab. Maybe just changing ships in investing/accounts may be helpful down the road?

    It's been a while. Great video, I actually didn't know that you could withdraw contributions from your roth IRA at anytime, I need to figure out how to do that, I'm interesting in the early retirement conversion ladder. Like-26

      I know!! I realized as I was editing the video, haha. Luckily you can turn it on after the transaction goes through.

    Thanks so much for this video! Now that you bought shares for that money you had in there, what happens next time you add more money to the Roth ira? Do you have to go back in and manually buy more shares? Or does it do it automatically? I see they have robo advisors..is this a smart option?

    If I set up direct deposit, does that money automatically get invested into these stocks? Or do I need to go in every paycheck and assign investments.

      You'll need to purchase new shares every time your direct deposit comes through into Schwab. There's no way to set it up automatically, unfortunately. If you choose to invest in mutual funds instead, Schwab does offer automatic investing with a limited selection of mutual funds: ua-cam.com/video/FoWmz8xxEvw/v-deo.html

    It is the same to have the Roth Ira or the Roth Contributory Ira..?? I see that you used the second one.
