    The summary under the video says "However, as temperatures rise and environmental conditions shift, these frozen giants are increasingly prone to catastrophic collapses." What are these ice rivers supposed to do, regardless of climate, as millions of tons of snow are heaped on the mountains that feed them? Ice caving is a natural process for glaciers.

    • @ut000bs

      The word "collapse" is used for dramatic effect, I believe. You are correct this has nothing to with any climate change.

      If the rate of snowfall exceeds the melting and calving, the glacier grows.
      If the rate of melting and calving exceeds the snowfall, the glacier recedes.
      These days in most of the world, glaciers are receding rapidly. At least we get to see cool calving events.

    • @ut000bs
      @ut000bs 15 днів тому +1

      @@pahtar7189 your eyes should tell you whether the ice is melting or not. White and blue ice is not melting.
      When the glacier is retreating/melting it gets very dirty rather quickly. "White tops do not a melter make."

    • @ut000bs
      @ut000bs 15 днів тому +1

      @@pahtar7189 I forgot to add we are still coming out of a glacial maximum. Permanent ice should be dropping. Especially at lower altitudes/latitudes. However, it is happening very slowly.
      None of this has anything to do with a "climate crisis" which is a political term.

      Glaciers do not "collapse," they calve. This is called calving. When glaciers grow out over the water so far they can't support their own weight, they fall. To call it a "collapse" is just drama.
      Also, notice I said growing glaciers. There is no bigger picture.

      Yes and no. Glaciers calving is the product of snow/ice accumulation inland. The weight of that snow/ice pushes the material underneath down and out. This would happen with or without global warming.
