  • The team behind THE WOMAN KING in conversation with TIFF in advance of its premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. Featuring a thrilling performance from Oscar winner Viola Davis, this epic tale brings to life the true story of the Agojie, the all-female military regiment charged with protecting the embattled African Kingdom of Dahomey.
The 47th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 8 to 18, 2022. For more, visit tiff.net.
Featuring thrilling performances from Oscar winner Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad), and John Boyega, this epic tale of struggle and liberation brings to life the galvanizing true story of the Agojie, the all-female military regiment charged with protecting the embattled West African Kingdom of Dahomey from adversarial neighbours, European colonizers, and the horrors of the slave trade. The year is 1823. Orphaned at birth and raised by an abusive guardian who seeks only to marry her off for money, young Nawi (Mbedu) petitions for entry into the Agojie, led by the single-minded Nanisca (Davis). To defend their people against the oppressive and heavily armed Oyo Empire, the Agojie run candidates through an arduous training program. Nawi proves herself an outstanding, ferocious soldier, though she questions the Agojie rules, which state that no one in their ranks shall marry or have children. As the Agojie prepare for the fight of their lives against both the Oyo and the Portuguese slave traders with whom they are in league, long-buried secrets come to light, revealing harrowing stories of personal sacrifice that will only strengthen the bonds between these unstoppable warrior women. Building on a career of rousing dramas that includes Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees (TIFF ’08), Beyond the Lights (TIFF ’14), and The Old Guard, filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood delivers a riveting story of heroism, friendship, and the power of women. As with many of cinema’s great epics, she dramatizes a turning point in world history through spectacular battle scenes and moving character work. This is a rare film that combines vast scale and intimate emotion. At the centre of it all, Davis is absolutely mesmerizing as the Agojie’s strategist warrior.
Gina Prince-Bythewood is from Los Angeles. She studied film at UCLA, wrote for television, and directed the shorts Progress (97), Damn Whitey (97), and Bowl of Pork (97) before writing and directing the features Love & Basketball (00), The Secret Life of Bees (08), and Beyond the Lights (14), the latter two of which premiered at TIFF, and directing The Old Guard (20). The Woman King (22) is her latest film.

Viola Davis is just class personified. All of these women are exceptionally talented and beautiful. I could not keep my eyes off of Viola, even amongst all of this talent and beautiful. She reminds me of a female Sidney Poitier. They both, Viola and Sidney, exude this regal glow that can't be quantified or copied. I am grateful and honored that I got to see them both, even in their prime, during my lifetime.

Viola Davis: "Most of the story if fictionalized. It has to be... We have to entertain people. If we just told a history lesson... that would have been a documentary... If people want to learn more, they can investigate more." And, as people have investigated, we found your movie was the exact opposite of true history.

Future movie about slavery: The southern slave owners were really just trying to help black people, by teaching them about how raise crops and how to work. Whipping them was just trying to teach discipline. If we include minor details like the brutality and stuff, it might be less entertaining. We're not making a documentary! (Viola Davis comment)

Hollywood celebrating the largest slaving tribe in Africa. You couldn't make it up.
They acturally fought the French who were protecting the villages and came to abolish slavery.
O yes and those stunning pro-slavery amazones were vanquished within half a day by the vastly outnumbered French.

There are so many films and shows about black people inflicting pain on other black people. The Wire, American Gangster, City of God to name a few. Shaka Zulu slaughtered hundreds in neighboring tribes, including his own. Should we not tell his story? Our humanity and history is messy. I understand the want for positive representation because we have gone without it for so long. However I think it’s both freeing and profound to see our humanity explored in all its forms. I don’t think we should shy away from telling a story just because the subject is complicated.

@@kevinsavasci7311 it is inspired by true events. There is a kingdom of Dahomey, they did kidnap and enslave people and there were Agojie warriors who fought in battles. No period film in the history of cinema has ever been completely historically accurate, nor is that the goal. The goal is to tell a story. Even documentaries have a perspective. In Saving Private Ryan, the army unit meant to find Ryan (Tom Hanks and his crew) were completely fictitious as well as the journey they went on to find him. Roots was a mixture of fact and fiction. The message/story of Roots was more impactful than maintaining accuracy. The imagery was powerful. It sparked a dialogue; an interest for people to look into their own past and gave people a sense of pride. I fully understand the expectation for filmmakers to handle period films (especially ones dealing with sensitive topics) with care and maintain a level of authenticity. In my opinion, the filmmakers accomplished this while being able to tell their own story.
I do think it is important that the diaspora come together in real life to have discussions about our complicated history. While art can spark these discussions, I don’t think it is the job of artists to literally interpret reality.

@@katarinasabrina Hello, I have no problem to made history inspired film, actually i would like to see it more, but if you pick and choose only parts which you like form history, say only A and forget to say B, or worst made it seen by our nowayday eyes/morals/standards without contemplate historical reality, then you just make it worst. This is why, because film tend to stay in overall memory kinda deeper, and ppl as lazy as can ppl be just dont tend to check the real history, but take the movies one as facts, and then you have start of distorting, twisting the history.
I think that will be wrong thing to do with history. PS to your comparsion movies, yeah SPR film was about fictional unit, but all around was as truth to history as possible, they even made show americans soldiers do war crimes for example, but this film is about woman military unit, whos work for hellish regime, whos kiddnaped and enslave other ppl in region (and those woman warriors participated on it). And from what i see in trailers and bits, i kinda dont see the level of history there... they just had part of history, choose only what they like, twisted it in nowayday modern black woman narrative and forget about the ugly parts. To end my point, its okey make historical films, but we need to stop twisting and rewrite history whenever its not usefull in our nowadays morals.... and btw if you look in history you can find whole kind things, you dont need to makeshift it.
