Mont Blanc | What It's Really Like Climbing Western Europe's Highest Mountain (Goûter Route)

Earlier this year I set out to climb Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco), the highest mountain in western Europe at 4810m. Before tackling Mont Blanc however, we climbed Gran Paradiso (4061m), the highest mountain in Italy, as an acclimatisation ascent. This in itself was an amazing experience. Day 1 saw us hike to Refugio Chabod, up through the forests slopes of the Aosta Valley. From here, we set off in the darkness for the Laveciau Glacier, which would take us to the summit. The third day was a descent back to the valley.
For the Mont Blanc leg of our trip, we left Chamonix for Les Houches, catching the cable car to the Tramway Du Mont Blanc. From the final station we hiked to the Tête Rousse Hut (3167m) and stayed the night surrounded by epic mountain scenery. The next morning we set off at dawn up the Goûter Ridge to cross the Grand Couloir and ascend to the Goûter Hut (3835m). After a short break, all that was left ahead was the final 4 hour push to the summit. Want to know if we made it? Watch on to find out!

I was very anaemic years ago Abby. I felt worn out and I started to get pains in my chest on effort.Ended up in the intensive care ward, they thought I had a heart attack but it was due to severe anaemia, due to undiagnosed coeliac condition. Hope you have it sorted at this stage. Love your videos.

Stunning! I remember watching your ALIVE: Tour du Mont Blanc video and it feels full circle to watch you on your journey to the centre of it. You encapsulate what being in the outdoors is about, as my old PhD supervisor said to me during coffee once ' Its not about the destination, it about the journey' and I hope you hold onto that forever because so many forget and become a slave to the endpoint.

Congratulations to you Abbie, and to the group!! Thank you for taking us along. I know the courage it must have taken. Not just your personal challenges, but pushing yourself to go at the pace of everyone else. I struggle going out with groups. With my physical challenges, I constantly worry about holding others back. Terrible source of anxiety for me. I think it's why I prefer to solo hike. Of course on trips like this; for safety reasons, you have to become part of a team.

So good to see these mountains! This summer I have been on vaccation to Italy. Climbed to Refugio Emanuel Vittoria and Refugio Chabod to the base of the Gran Paradiso. Later that week I've been at Aiguille du Midi at 3842 meter, netxt to the Mont Blanc. So I've not been exactly where you have been but I've seen where you have been. It was amazing to be there and is was amazing to see you there. Bringing back memories. Pure nature, that's what it is. Thanks for sharing! 👍

Abbie, watching this had a tear in my eye, This time last year me and my 19 year old had had a week in Cham , we were going to do Paradiso but weather changed our plans and we did Mont Tucal instead . Again the feeling of pride in myself and for my son,who is back there this year to do Blanc, I wish I was there with him. I always belive the mountain lets you pay it a visit , I was lucky ,and Im sure you will be back the buzz and need to complete was was missed will push you. You vid has me longing to finish what I started 11 months ago.

What an incredible journey Abbie and what an achievement. The Alps look really beautiful, although my legs really did turn to jelly at times just watching at home 😅 that second leg up to the second mountain shelter was quite something. You can see why it’s the most dangerous section. The end then really hit me. Just shows how truly dangerous these places can be. Thanks for bringing us this video 😊
