  • In this series, Firm Foundations, we examine history and doctrine pertaining to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We examine the LDS (Mormon) faith and culture in order to separate the facts from the fiction in LDS history and doctrine.
While the creators of the show are members of the LDS church, this show is not affiliated with or endorsed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We strive to be independent critics, learning about and explaining Mormon culture and history, and sometimes calling for changes to ideas and assumptions we hold as members when the evidence doesn’t back up our long-held myths or ideas about the church, it’s policies, or it’s leaders.
After Joseph Smith died, there were several contenders for succession as church prophet and leader. Why did Brigham Young become the next prophet? Discover the answers here.
In every video we carefully craft the scripts and fact-check our stories. We examine facts, scriptures, doctrinal sources, historical documents, modern surveys, psychology, and scientific data. Hannah, as the writer and researcher, interprets this information and crafts it into a factually accurate, but interesting and dynamic episode. It is important to our mission that we not sugar coat or ignore facts, and that we include all pertinent information and use empathy when examining individuals’ choices. We want to empower you to do the same. We always include links to our sources below each video, so that viewers can dig deeper into the source material, ask questions, and find the truth. Smith described Cowdery as a thief, liar, perjurer, counterfeiter, adulterer and leader of “scoundrels of the deepest degree." There was no more honor among them all than among any other thieves and criminals. Fanny Alger knew that very well, as did those in the inner circle. There was an excellent masters thesis published by the University of Nevada - Reno a few years ago on _The Secret Mormon Meetings of 1922_ , S.C. Montez, with extensive sourcing included. It is available for free via Google / scholarworks. LDS leadership has known for well over a century that the church's claims are fraudulent. They just decided it was better for financial and reputational reasons to press on.

Section 43 of the doctrine Covenants tells you how a prophet should be called and says so you're not deceived this it's how a prophet is called. Brigham Young was not called as section 43 suggest. Therefore it there is a consequence the church would be deceived.

  • @spamjelly9635

Section 43 the doctrine covenants says there can only be one Prophet Seer and Revelator at a time. If you can't follow simple instructions from God then you're going to be deceived.

I find it odd that it Brigham Young was the true leader of the true church why didn’t any members of Joseph Smith family follow him to Utah?

Jeff Lanphere. Thanks for asking. I find that question to be a weak objection. The Holy Ghost has confirmed Brigham Young's prophethood to me. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints isn't a Joseph Smith Junior family business. It is Jesus Christ's business. Being the child, widow, sibling, or parent of a prophet doesn't confer prophethood or infallibility to one.
I hope you aren't thinking Lucy Mack Smith's failure to move to Utah proves anything. She was very old. I don't expect very old people to walk across the plains.
You didn't bring it up but here is what I think of them. I have forgiven them. If I end up with one of them as a neighbor in The Celestial Kingdom I won't make one little peep against God forgiving them and letting them in.

@@Hamann9631 I didn't see anything negative in the question. I have a testimony of the Gospel, and all that comes with it, but I don't know all the answers, so wondering why some did not follow Brigham Young isn't a terrible question.

Not only did they not follow Brigham to Utah, but during the succession crisis the Smiths supported others, not Brigham, to be Joseph's successor. The church was not set up then the way it is set up now. Apostles main responsibility was to be missionaries, not to lead the church Joseph did not set it up that way. Hyrum was supposed to be the successor but he died as well. Joseph's oldest son was next in line and Brigham actually claimed he would lead the church until Joseph's son was old enough.
The Smith's did not believe Brigham should be the successor, they also did not agree with things Brigham was implementing after Joseph's death. Then there was the way Brigham dealt with Emma. They had good reason to not follow Brigham west.

    • @Hamann9631
      @Hamann9631 3 роки тому

@@freethinker1026 Thanks for your thoughts and the facts. It is true early Apostles went out as missionaries. I don't see how prevents God from using them as leaders now. One reason for that is we see the ancient Apostles leading and not going on missionary trips. That is why the Apostles Paul, who was unique in that way, was able to meet the other Apostles in Jerusalem when there was a debate about circumcision.
I don't believe Joseph III was picked by God to be his father's successor because it is Jesus Christ's church and not a Smith family business. Maybe Joseph thought out loud about how much he would like his son to be a prophet, but that doesn't constitute binding revelation from God.

He was the prophet of men
    not of God.
Mormons hide as much as they show you freely.
    Do not think otherwise.
If anyone declares themselves prophet and keeps hidden things in darkness, he is a liar and a servant of mammon.

The truth is the Book of Mormon was plagiarized from several contemporary stories& common myths. The “gold plates” were his masterpiece of several treasure digging frauds. His own practices & the d& c go against the book of Jacob. He was addicted to wealth, power& manipulation. He manipulated many women and girls to marry& have sex with him, including 3 of his foster daughters. His BoM is debunked by science, archeologists and biologists, genealogy. Plus why would Hebrews write in “reformed Egyptian”? Why did the witnesses “only see with spiritual eye, not my physical eyes” It’s full of anachronisms.

There's nothing to suggest that Brigham Young ever transfigured into Joseph Smith. Brigham Young wasn't even bedding to be the prophet. Nothing on that date no journals no minutes nothing suggests that Brigham Young transfers. Nothing even from Brigham Young or any of the 12.
