Why You Shouldn't Buy "Dory" - about the Blue Tang

  • Basic information about the Hippo Blue Tang aka "Dory" from Finding Nemo and Disney's new film Finding Dory. These fish are not for beginner aquarists and are not safe to buy for your children just because you like the movie.
**PLEASE understand I'm talking in layman's terms in this video. I'm not using a lot of the scientific words and such because I'm anticipating people who don't know the hobby enough to recognize what they mean. Some things I have put into simpler terms to make it easier to understand.
Only purchase if you're an experienced saltwater aquarist
Please understand there are reports that the Hippo Blue Tang is becoming threatened in the wild due to the coral reef diminishing and all the pollution, global warming, over fishing, etc occurring to our oceans! Instead of spending all your money to potentially kill a blue tang, consider donating some money to wildlife funds and ocean conservation funds to conserve the species in the wild! Also look into other ways to help the ocean as a whole. That's the best way to respect the precious species :))
In my next videos I'll be showing how to care for different types of clownfish and what you'll need for a setup. I'll also be doing a tour of my colorado trip in one of my next few videos.
    Thank you for watching!!
Share with those who are interested in purchasing a blue tang and help protect dory :))) Love u guys

Right? I wouldn't just waltz into a dog shelter and say "give me the Great Dane mutt you guys have in the back!" No, I went for my tiny mutt because I know he's the right size for my family. Same with Blue Tangs. Like she said, it's like owning a wild animal that also costs a million dollars annually to care for. If you're a fish expert, then go for it.

I work at a pet store, I had a customer come in wanting to buy a Blue Tang for her 4 year-old son. I had to explain to her the difficulty & investment, how she can't just put it in a 3 gal tank. She then asked about the Clown Fish & decided that would be better for him. I literally had to call a manager to confirm a refusal of sale for this lady. I told her I couldn't sell to her bc she wouldn't be properly caring for them.
So she ended up getting a goldfish I guess a few days ago, my coworker said she refused to get a 10 gal min, instead got a 1 gal w 3 goldfish.
I feel so bad for those fish. I also feel somewhat bad sometimes telling people no, but at the end of the day I'm more concerned about the animals well being & life, as do most people who work at pet stores.

It's sad. They aren't any different to dogs or cats. They are animals and they have needs. They are living creatures, not decorations. You wouldn't get a dog and keep him in his cage all his life would you?
I've noticed fish get the short end of the stick when it comes to this. Most people just don't even bother learning how to care of them and expect them to be okay living in a little bowl, which is why most fish die within several months.
If people can't properly care for fish, they shouldn't get any. Don't sentence them to death.

+Pixie Prince Fish have been around and surviving a lot longer than we have and they've been a food source for a lot of marine life and other animals for a long time. The ones we take out of the ocean are already populated beyond what is needed. "Caring" for them does nothing to their numbers, they're just there to be eaten by other animals.

I was at the pet store and a woman who was very heavily pregnant squatted down and grabbed a tiny plastic fish bowl that seemed like it could have contained less than three cups of water. She went "Hey honey let's get a betta fish!" To her husband who was holding her four year old boy's hand... I walked over and literally pointed to a 3 gallon tank with a filter and heater and said in the sweetest tone that I could possibly manage "This tank is super good for Betta fish and has a built in heater and filter!" (I would recommend at least a 10 gallon for a Betta but I didn't want to overwhelm her) she then nodded, grabbed the tiny bowl, and then walked and grabbed her kid's hand and had him pick out a red Betta. They then paid and walked out. I was FUMING. I can't believe people do these kinds of things and put these amazing fish in such horrible conditions and think it is perfectly fine!!!! Ugh I was so pissed

Elanore Nordquist it's sad to see that there are no restrictions to owning fish or intentionally let them suffer because they don't want to buy the right equipment. there should be more rules. when you buy a dog the breeder will also ask you if you live in a house with a yard or how you will care for them and give them their needs.

When I first saw ratatouille, I really wanted a rat, but my parents said no because at the time because they hated rats. It's been 8 years since that movie came out and I recently got my first two rats. I am so happy my parents said no to me when I was younger, because now I feel that I have alot more responsibility and can now give my rats the proper care they deserve. My point is, just because an animal in a movie looks cool or cute, doesn't mean you are qualified or knowledgeable enough to properly care for the animal.

    • @biancavanniekerk3449

Marble Woolf I had rats in secondary, and thankfully I was well aware of the responsibility they came with.
I treated them like kings, once every month I'd fill their whole cage with shredded paper and they'd go nuts. I bought them running balls, played with them outside, bought them a gigantic cage with gym extensions, had them on strict diets, trained them with peanuts and gave them lots of love.
If you can put in the time and effort they're perfect pets. They're as clean as you let them be.

My local pizzeria has a massive tank with a Blue and a Yellow Tang in there. There's also an Achilles Tang and a Fire goby. There's a few other fish I can never identify because they so faaaast. But. This is okay. It's a massive tank. Everything looks clean, the fish aren't sick. They don't fight. They all have their space.
Meanwhile, a pet store a few hour drive away has blue tangs in 30 gallon tanks. They have a baby alligator (idk why?) in a 40? 50- gallon? Tank. All the fish are ripped apart and fight on the daily. The corals are okay. Anemones get taken to good homes. But I'm just.
I find it so weird how a pizzeria can take better care of massive fish than a pet store.
    Research is important.
    Okay I'll stop blabbering now.

No way would I ever be calm about a giant salt water tank! Blue tangs are beautiful to look at; they are not for a novice or slacker who thinks it'll be a walk in the park.

When I was little we had this huge 250 gallon (I think? It could of been larger it was built into the wall) salt water tank. Well my sisters and I watched finding dory and my parents decided to add a couple of clown fish and a couple of blue tangs to our tank. My parents had no idea how to take care of salt water fish so we had a tank technician come out once a week to clean the tank and monitor the health of the fish. We would feed our fish more than once a week don’t worry and I personally would scrub the tank free of algae whenever I saw it. This ended up causing my love for aquatic life as I’d just sit there while this guy cleaned our fish tank and asked him questions about the fish. We moved out of that house so unfortunately we couldn’t take the fish with us, but we made sure to rehome them to people who actually understand the work that goes into owning saltwater fish. It ended up working out for my family because we already had a huge tank and an established ecosystem with snails, coral, shrimp, and other fish. I would highly recommend it if you have the money to spare.

I understand your talking about ppl who want a hippo tang due to the movie, but these reasons can be applied to most marine aquarium fish! The majority of marine aquarium fish are wild caught. Roughly 14 percent of the species in the saltwater aquarium trade have been successfully bred and reared in captivity, but only about one percent are commonly available to aquarists as aquacultured animals. Dont you know this?
Most get large, like that red lipped tang of yours. She will get almost twice as big than a Dory ever would!

christina 1993 saltwaterfish arent hard to keep as long as you have the proper size tank and equipment as well as you keep up on the care of the tanks and do alot of reserch. hippo tangs aka dory fish are really easy to keep if you go to a place that actually sepcializes in fish and you have a tank about 75 gallons or larger. ive kept my hippo tabg with my yellow tang and some other small fish for about 7 years before my house underwent a fire.... rn ive been rebuilding my tanks and setups and everything is going good. i will say that salt water fish keeping is expencive but as long as you have the equipment and determination to care for your fish, you will do good.

Nikki Hitchcock yes, most inexperienced bird owners don't understand that unless you take them to an avian vet you're most likely just going to get a bunch of wrong information or just plain lack thereof. I've also heard some horror stories about people taking birds to the general vet for standard grooming like nail clipping etc and the bird ends up with a broken leg or wing?? Crazy.

Your description of the ocean may - to some people seem like the way you described it and it's great that you explained that it's not... you're absolutely right about how salt water fish shouldn't be instantly added to the saltwater aquarium - unlike freshwater fish, the saltwater MUST be cycled and stabilized in a timely manner (very long time!!) Before you can add "Dory" or any other saltwater species.

The thing you said about the tank size is unfortunate because now a _lot_ of Pediatric Hospitals and Clinics have the fish tank in the lobby, and what do you usually see? A Royal Blue Tang and Clownfish, and that's because Finding Nemo was such a popular children's movie and children enjoy seeing those types of fish and get excited when they see them & say "Mum look! There's a Dory" or "Mum look! A Nemo!". The tanks are filled with so many of these fish and are so small for them. The fish must be unhappy.

I love seeing it every time I go there, and over the past 10 or so years I've been going to that dentist. I know they are taking care of them properly because they have all greatly increased in size, have very vibrant colors, and I don't think they have added, gotten rid of any, or any have died in those 10 years. Seeing a nicely kept reef tank in a dentist lobby is really nice. I'd hope that if I came back in another 10 or so years they would still have those same fish in the tank.

If you want to keep coral, however, that’s when it gets expensive and difficult.

Hey, Taylor, thank you for the video. It's nice to see someone who cares enough about animals to try and educate people on proper care and decisions concerning them. I worked as an aquarium maintenance tech for a long time, under the training of a marine biologist, and I saw some things in your video that aren't quite on point. I'd like to share some of my experience with you, hopefully it will help you in your endeavors.
Pacific blue tangs are rather delicate. They are definitely not a beginner fish. However, fish catching and shipping is a very rigorous and often times fatal for the fish. Some fish are caught with cyanide, which stuns them right away and kills them a couple weeks, some are bumped and suffer internal organ damage which kills them slowly, some get too hot or cold, or suffer oxygen deprivation or extreme stress, all of which will reduce their slime coating and lead to a slow death after they are purchased. Even the marine biologist I worked for got a lot of sick and dying fish in the store. It's part of the industry. Fish also suffer kidney failure, liver failure, cancer, heart attacks, and all the health problems we do. A small fish like your blue tang should have been fine in a small tank. I suspect it was stressed out from the beginning, which is why it didn't do well. Or something happened, an accidental poisoning or some of the levels weren't correct. But a baby fish should be fine in a small tank.
You mentioned cycling the tank for three months before putting a fish in the tank. Cycling the tank is referring to the nitrite cycle, where ammonia is converted via bacteria to nitrite and then to nitrate. It is essential to have a fish in the water for this to take place, since the bacteria that begins the conversion grows from the ammonia produces by the fish. No fish means no ammonia, which means no cycling. If a tank stands for three months with no fish in it, no cycling takes place.
Specific quantities of live rock are only necessary for reef tanks. Fish tanks have sand, which is where most of the nitrite cycle bacteria will grow. Fish just need habitat and hiding places.
On the subject of sand, live sand is actually a really terrible product. It is supposed to be full of living bacteria, rearing and ready to go. However, it's been in an air tight container with no climate control or food for who knows how long. By the time it is purchased, it is long since dead. All of the organisms in the store bought live sand are going to rot as soon as they get in the tank, and cause a huge explosion of ammonia. It's like throwing a dead cat in the tank. However, if you can get live sand strait from an active tank, that will have the live bacterial culture, and will work just fine as long as it doesn't dry out, or get too hot or cold. But the packaged stuff is just a an ammonia bomb.
For the section on water testing, there are few cases in which those things need to be tested daily. During the initial cycle, Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate should be tested a few times a week, but generally those don't need to be tested again unless something goes wrong. Specific gravity is tested when adding or changing water, but that's about it. Or adding new fish, to make sure the levels are the same. Calcium and PH hardly need to be checked with a fish tank. For reef tanks, it is suggested a couple times a week. If it is a hungry reef tank, it may be up to a couple times a day. That stuff doesn't need to be tested every day, by and large.
I know you don't know me from anyone. Feel free to double check my information or shoot me a msg if you doubt me. I hope I didn't offend you with any of this, or by trying to help out. As I said, I'm just trying to share my years of experience and training under a marine biologist.
I do agree with you, that making an impulse purchase of a fish just because it's in a movie is a horrible idea. These fish are a big responsibility and do require a lot of care. If maintenance is kept up on, keeping a saltwater fish tank is easy and not an issue. But neglect it even a little and it becomes a nightmare, and most people who aren't truly in to the hobby end up doing just that. It's not a hobby for everyone.

    • @Luculencia
      @Luculencia 6 років тому

Fishless cycling can be done by dripping a small amount of pure ammonia into the tank to keep the concentration at around 4 - 5 ppm (without any fish or inverts in obviously!) or by "feeding" the tank with fish food allowed to rot into the tank (this method is messy and not as accurate). When cycling is complete, the water is changed, and fish are added. There is no need to sacrifice a live fish to the cycling process.

    • @debaike
      @debaike 6 років тому

I agree with you that there are other ways to start the nitrogen cycle on a tank, the point though was that a tank will not cycle if it is just left to sit, you need bacteria to be added, whether that be starter fish (damsels for salt or danios for fresh) or adding live bacteria or trace amounts of ammonia

I work at a pet store too and it is unfortunate the majority of people don't understand the care it takes to own fish. Especially if the tank is for a child...I actually had one customer who, After I had explained to them the nitrite cycle and how you have to set the tank up first OR buy live bacteria to put in the tank before you add fish, concluded that he would just use 'natural dirt' to 'cycle the tank' I disagreed with him but he insisted....the customer is always right....
I remember him saying to me "how do you think my kids are going to act when I get home with a fish tank with no fish in it?"
To that I said "then it may be more likely that the fish wouldn't make it", he still insisted I get him fish....
Haven't seen him since. :/. Its possible that all went fine, and that he just doesnt need to come back in...or its also possible that he woke up the next morning to a tank of dead fish and children crying, blamed me, and claimed "ill never go back to that store again"....so....who knows. :/.
