  • Alot of people have been asking about the second generation Yamaha FZ1 that ran from 2006 to 2015 since Ive owned one for a while now. I usually answer the questions on a person by person basis but this video was requested at a pretty good time. If you are in the market for one, definitely check this video out.

I have a 2009 FZ1. Had 5.5k miles on it. Mostly stock. My 1st bike. I am 50yrs old 6’3 and about 270. I respect it. She is a beast. I like being upright. I like it being a all a rounder. Play when I want. Commute when I want. Two up. When I want. She is heavy 485 pounds. At speed you can’t tell at low speeds you feel it. Not a gas saver. She will drink it up. I keep it at 4-5k rpms. But she comes to life just after that. Cars don’t stand a chance and I keep up fine with most two wheelers. Harleys, bye bye. Anastasia can be a dirty girl when needed and aside from that she is just sexy. It’s in Yamaha cobalt blue. I have blue add ons. She pops. And it is a Yamaha so anyone can work on it and parts are easy. There as so many bikes out there get the one that speaks to you and your needs.

I've had mine since 2011. Bought it on 10,000 miles, it's now got 55,000 and it's still rock solid. It's still a nice looking bike and doesn't look old yet so it does my 1,500 mile trips around Europe each year fully loaded up with ease. Also handles the weekend blasts and I've embarrassed many a sports bike rider too. Happy riding :)

@@Theillestrator1050 Sorry to post here, I just rewatched a dl-ed vid of your #14 K100,
the throttle cable is looped back in too tight a curve/loop IMHO where it goes down one side of the headstock,
perhaps thats why the throttle isn't operating correctly without a return heavier spring -
..if you can, route the cable in a gentler wider curve on the outside of the headstock brefore looping it across to the intake/inside side of the bike.

    • @Theillestrator1050

I wish it were that simple. The throttle body would exhibit that issue even with the cable disconnected.

    • @razor1uk610
      @razor1uk610 4 роки тому

@@Theillestrator1050 perhaps there is a plastic bushing or (a sealed bearing) that is worn, aged, degraded or bone-dry etc in that intake unit?
..or the twist grip or its rubber is slightly binding or rubbing on the cable/switches housing next to it?
mmm, triple check that all rough edges & burrs from the twistgrip tube and the throttle cable camming wheel and the soldered cable nipple are removed & smoothed finely - maybe could've left an 'binding' edge, nodule or strand somewhere.

I also have the Sargent aftermarket seat that is still in the box it came in , 🤦‍♂️I bought some bar risers from amazon and they went on without any having to add any new cables but one is a little snug for my liking .Bike never misses a beat , runs perfect! Great video...Have a fully track ready 08 Fz1. Had the frame crack issue had it welded ...no problem .This bike is the best performance value you can get . It does everything you ask and with a few mods . Lower bars , slip on exhaust, Penske shock , rear peg delete, electronic and air flow tinkering , quick shifter , sticky tires ... you can be an effective annoyance on track days for a the sport bike boys .Way too much fun for the buck ! Keep up the good videos . I need to get out and ride ...SOON !

Good job on the mighty FZ1. I just got a 2009 FZ1n in Australia. It come with a Powercommander, Pipe, K&N filter, other bits and Bobs. A great bike all round.
The ECU tune from Factory Retarted 1st and Second at that low RPM until you get to 4000 RPM, then it gives you the full beans at around 7000rpm.
Woolich Racing offer a Custom Map for the FZ1 and I left the Powercommander on as well. The Custom Map and Dyno get the best out of the FZ1.
Mine is set at 1500rpm now, a noticeable difference. Gets going straight off the clutch. A great bike overall, Really good front Brakes,[enough to lift the rear end off the road under heavy braking], I just tuned the suspension to dial it in real nice. I think it would do alright on a Track day.
Great video, A lot of work went into it, Cheers.

OMG man. You are not making things easy for me. I love my 2008 FZ1 Fazer that I turned into the GT with the OEM fairings. Same colour as yours. I was looking at upgrading for the sake of retaining asset value, modern conveniences and ABS. I roll in the EU with long trips and the emission laws here are much more strict than in the US. Which is good I think. Everytime I browse the pre-owned sites, I can find NO REPLACEMENT to this bike. Then I back off and love it even more. Even my mechanic says this is a life keeper bike. Good choice and I understand your passion for it.

Just got a 2012 FZ1 with 8k miles for 6 grand out the door, and I absolutely love it. Sourced some side fairings I will be getting soon that should get here by the time the Delkevic slip on, that will replace the Twin Brothers one it came with, does. The bike already had the tail tidy, shorter throw shifters, adjustable clutch/brake levers, slim sequential front and rear turn signals, upgraded gel seat, and PUIG windscreen. The bike came with about 80% of the things I would've got for it myself. I'll be adding the side fairings, sliders, Delkevic 14in slip on, and projector LED headlights. I love that my first sport inclined bike cost me 7k flat. Now I am really sold on Yamaha and can't wait to get me a recent R1. We only get rain here in Cali this time of year, so I'll get some rain riding experience now on this one for next rain season on an R1. Thanks for covering everything you did.

That is a really good in-depth review. I got all the warnings and info I need to buy a good one. Been thinking about an FZ6, but then FZ1 is not a lot more expensive, but is a lot more premium with that inverted adjustable front. Plus I like the FZ1(S) styling more. And that liter engine will just keep going forever considering how understressed it is in the city.
BTW, I currently own an SV1000S which is too vibey and thirsty for my taste. It kinda scares me too: if I'm not careful with the throttle, it will either lurch from underneath me nearly tearing my arms out of shoulder sockets or break traction on the rear wheel (even now, in July, I managed to do that).

Excellent video and very accurate except 1 thing. I have a 2014 and it had the stator rotor that’s prone to fail. I believe 2015 was the only year Yamaha upgraded it.
Besides that everything else you said is spot on. I agree that stock fz1 has no torque at all. I used to live in NYC so I know having the power down low would help tremendously light to light. I live in the midwest now where speed limit is mostly 50+mph so it hasn’t bother me much but I’m still on the edge of either I should at least go with a 16t up front.
Anyways just wanted to say this video was very informative and anyone who’s in the market for a fz1 should watch this before buying one.

      Yeah keep looking.
Although I’ve seen them for sale with 60k miles.
As long as maintenance is done ,they’ll last a very long time.
But yeah I would keep looking.
I found an 06 with a mere 2800 miles on it.
Ive seen a few with under 10 k miles.
You just have to look out of town sometimes.

Ive heard dropping one tooth on the front sprocket transforms the bike so might give it a go. Knowbody will believe me but i just traded my 09 ninja 650 for a super clean 08 fz1 and i couldnt be happier. The guy i traded with rides a harley and his wife just started riding, she insisted on getting a sport bike, long story short she dropped the fz1 on her legg, they realized that was too much bike for her to learn on. My ninja 650 was a low mileage clean bike. We made a strait trade and both of us was satisfied but i most definetly traded up and got the better deal. The fz1 will be in my collection for many years to come, i freaking love this bike.

I believe you buddy. You never know what people are going to do, sounds like a good deal for both of you. Your bike would have collected dust in the garage until the end of time if Harley Man hadn't released it to you. My opinion is that you got the much better deal for sure. I rode a gen1 fz1 for 16years, 60k mi, so I totally understand the feeling of owning the bike. I'm actually looking at getting a Gen 2 now vs a New Katana. Just don't think I want to get into the damn payments ya know. Have a good one brother, great deal.

you can change the throttle position sensor from 16 to 18, usually works to fix the snatchy throttle
2nd would be adding a steering damper, love mine, but it is different for all of us.
mass airbox mod is a nice DIY
stainless steel brake lines 'Core moto' are the one's I bought, makes the brakes really bite, a bit nerve wrecking at first, but you get use to it
adjustable clutch and brake levers, i went cheap on this, but expensive works too
upgraded rear shock to make the rear more stable under hard acceleration and putting the power down in corners, for me the rear is really bouncy and I get way too much feedback in corners.
tune 'Ivan's' is pretty darn good
I bought my FZ1 brand new off the show room floor in 2008, and have had it ever since. Good to know I missed all the recalls on the earlier versions. Great video by the way lots of interesting things I did not know.

    • @Theillestrator1050
      @Theillestrator1050  4 роки тому

Thats handy info if someone feels the snatchy throttle. I don't feel it much though. I definitely need a damper, especially with all that naked drag on the highway helping lift the front.
Airbox mod may indeed be in order if I ever un-cork the bike.
I've run coremoto lines on two bikes now. They are fantastic.
I might be weird in that I prefer the leverage of fully length levers lol.
The fact that you still own the FZ1 speaks to how good a bike it is!

@@Theillestrator1050 I have had the luck of riding a few other bikes, and once you ride something with a super smooth throttle, your expectations go through the roof. Same thing goes with brakes, once you ride something with progressive brakes, it is all you want. The FZ1 has neither, but overall it is a great machine, with adjustable suspension.
The best free thing to do with that bike or any bike is to set Sag (Spring Preload), front and back to your weight, and the Rebound (Tension) front and back. The FZ1 has the Rebound (tension) setting on the front right shock tube, and the Rebound adjustor is at the bottom of the shock between the chain. Both use a flat head screw driver to adjust.
Compression setting can be changed, it is only on the front left shock, and is best set during a ride. Try opening it up and then closing it down a few turns from the factory setting. Write down the setting before hand so you can always go back to stock, if it that is what you are comfortable with. You should feel it become more bumpy or lumpy, at higher speeds and then turn it back down to where you are happy. At higher and higher speeds, it is hard to know unless you are on a track, or you are very spirited in your riding.
Front Spring preload settings: Watch videos on setting SAG
8 minimum (meaning 8 lines showing), you need a 14 mm socket to adjust
5.5 is standard setting or stock setting
      0 is Maximum hard setting
4 is where I am at due to weight
Front Rebound (Tension) if you start from zero meaning turn the flat head screw driver (CW) all the way to zero or all the way in
      26 clicks soft (turning CCW)
18 clicks standard or stock (turning CCW)
      1 click hard (turning CW)
My bike had the front oil changed and seals, so my setting is 16. It will be different for everyone. Best thing to do is push the front end down and let it rebound up and dampen out. If it does this quickly and settles you have found the sweet spot for your oil and the age. If the front end bounces keep adjusting until it settles out quickly.
Front Compression damping if you start from zero meaning turn the flat head screw driver (CW) all the way to zero or all the way in
      26 clicks soft (turning CCW)
5 clicks standard or stock (turning CCW)
      1 click hard (turning CW)
Rear Spring Preload setting: You will need the special castle adjustor tool from yamaha. Watch videos on setting SAG
      1 Minimum soft
      3 standard
      7 maximum
5 is where I am, I feel the rear is way to soft, hence why a great upgrade for this bike is a rear shock, I am going full out with a Ohlins TTX.
Rear Rebound setting: Need flat head screw driver. Settings are backwards on the shock
12 clicks from all the way in (CCW) is the minimum soft
8 clicks from all the way in (CCW) is standard
1 click from all the way in (CCW) is hard
5 is where I am at, the rear shock has never been rebuilt nor was the rear spring changed.
Best thing to do is push the rear end down and let it rebound up and dampen out. If it does this quickly and settles you have found the sweet spot for your bike.
David Moss does and excellent job on explaining all of this stuff, Motojitsu has a few great videos on settings as well.
I am in works for a full suspension upgarde on the bike. A 2007 R1 front end, Brembo brakes, calipers, Brembo BMS, floating discs, as well as, TTX rear shock.

A flash does wonders for these bikes. It addressed all the factory shortcomings. Xplane does them for $200 and it's the best money you can spend on one of these bikes.

I really enjoy my 08 FZ1. It might not be the fastest thing on the planet, but were talking a machine that handles great on the highway, and at low speeds, low end torque, is very reliable, quite straightforward to maintain, etc, and will do 150 with no issue. That's a lot of things for one motorcycle to do and it does it well. It's practical and adaptable for a lot of use cases.

I have a 09 fz1 with the naked conversion.( But the wind beats my @ss to death) . PCM5 and a slip on. Traded the 17tooth to a 16tooth but have a vortex 48 tooth rdy to go I just wanted to see how much of a difference the 16 would make but I think you convinced me to put it on lol. the secondary upper butter flys in the throttle bodies have been removed for a savage increase in midrange performance and I installed a haltech quick shifter which works flawlessly but the bike doesn't really like the downshifts so I just clutch them.. but up shifts are butter..just make sure u set the interrupt interval to 100 milliseconds from the 80 it was originally set at. When I first installed the quick shifter it was on and off working okay so I decided to up the interrupt to 100 MS and that fixed everything. Also if you own ao9fc1 the only issue I've had is the coil packs they do have a tendency to fail so if your bike is starts up but it's hesitant on acceleration and then as you're driving it it'll go but then all of a sudden it'll just start pulling real hard out of nowhere that's coil packs replace them and change your spark plugs too cuz it fouled all the spark plugs.. oh and definitely definitely use the OEM iridiums.. I absolutely love my fz1. I had a 99 R1 for 4 years and this bike is just as fast as my 99 R1 but with a much stronger mid range as my R1 was mostly top end and was a very difficult bike to push hard. It's steering geometry was super sharp but required a finesse that took me years to learn bc it was the most unforgiving bike I have ever ridden to this day. It did not like noobs and would kill wannabe tt heros. Anyways I'm glad my fz1 attitude is much more chill but it can carve a corner with the best of them. I enjoyed your video and your experiences with your own FZ1 and thanks for sharing. I'm saving up money and getting my Fz1 in tip top shape bc my 2 favorite bikes on the planet are the Aprilia Tuono and the KTM super Duke and the Duke is my favorite..I'm a L twin/V twin guy through and through
