As a doc can I suggest putting some of your emergency meds in your PFD/life jacket such as epipen, glucose gel for hypoglycaemia or extra insulin for diabetics, even maybe your tourniquet. Some of those lifesaving meds/equipment on a trip we will have more than one person carry it just in case. Great video thx.
Good prep for first timers. One thing I suggest and have done myself to dial in the weight distribution since preloading is not likely on the water, is to teeter totter the boat as it's test loaded at home. Support the belly so it doesn't bow and teeter it on a 2×4. It can be prepped for near-perfect at launch.

Just stumbled on one of your how-to-roll vids and went down the rabbit-hole binging a ton of your kayak and hammock camping vids today. Instant subscribe and being in SC, I'll definitely be referencing your videos for any NC river trips I make in the future.
I usually carry a short wooden oar instead of a backup paddle. It takes up less space. But I have a 9' Dagger Zydeco, probably smaller than your boat. I haven't tried camping in it yet either, but I've been wanting to for a couple of years. PS if you want to supplement your rations with fish but don't want to pack a full sized rod, I highly recommend Emmrod packable spring steel rods. I have one that fits in my Element day pack without breaking down. They're excellent in my opinion.
This is what I have wanted to see. I unpacked and keep gear to the side I did not use on the New River. I want to nail down what I take. I will be watching this one again for sure.
Nice loadout video. My question for everyone who sees it is what do you do with your gear when it's not in your boat? Keeping things organized when I'm not using them is always a challenge for me.
Appreciate the video. We live outside Charlotte and are gonna float the Catawba River for a couple hours tomorrow morning. But we want to camp it someday too.
Regarding the paddle, I found an old 220 cm Lendel Kinetik locally and that has become my favorite touring paddle. It isn't full carbon, in fact I want to say it's the cheapest version of that paddle they made. I used it yesterday to do a quick 8 miles of ocean paddling, and it did go by quickly. I keep a decent pace just casually paddling, but when I need some power, I dig it hard and quickly pick up speed. Not usually an easy thing to do for a fat man in my barge of a Tsunami 165 lol.
thanks for the update on packing. I just did my first kayak camping trip this past weekend on the Brazos. I used your old video as a tutorial. Good trip. Buddies were in rental canoes. I was in a Dagger Blackwater 12.5. Had that back hatch packed tight. Handled a little different fully loaded, but I was really thankful to be in a kayak when we ran into the head winds.

Nice information video. I am always concerned about being stuck in the cockpit and was quite surprised of how many things you had in there... Until the suitcase. Is this a plane?

I've tended to carry a Trangia 27T STORMCOOKER Cooking Set for that reason. I worry about the explosion factors of canister stoves. You seem to have systematically thought out your gear so I would value your options about that. AWESOME instructional video. And lights, personal and vessel.
From what I have gathered, the explosion have occurred while using a 360 degree wind screen type device. Not sure the canister would explode just from ambient temps... I know the canisters usually have a warning not to be stored in temps above 120F. I have used them for almost 2 decades all through summer here in NC where upper 90's are the norm. No issues that I have ever witnessed or heard of other than the internet...hope that helps!

Hey Pete hope all is going well in your neck of the woods! So I re-watched this video cause it's always good to refresh the memory. I was wondering if you'd ever done a video showing the setup of your etrex home screen. I'd like to be able to setup mine in a similar fashion and learn to use it whenever I plan my first trip down a river or around a lake. Cheers and thanks!
Hey, great video! I noticed you’re using the V8 instead of your rescue pfd. Is this because you’re packing for the Current River, or do you never use your rescue vest for camping? If you have to tow, would you just improvise a quick release? Will you ever do a video covering basic rescue techniques, or is that a legal liability for you? Thanks for all the great information, I feel like I’m much more safety conscious after watching your videos, and I even take precautions on the slow lazy rivers we camp on. Hopefully someday, I get a chance to take a proper swift water rescue course!
Yes. When I use the yukon, I use the v8 jacket as it allows for the high back seat without getting in the way. I still have all the safety gear and pin kit, just not the rescue pfd. I have thought about some swr vids, but just have not yet done any. Great idea! Awesome to hear the videos are helping!!! That's what it is all about! Thanks for the kind words!
Thanks for all the amazing tips! I paddle along a bunch and looking to camp on my own this summer. Rescue beacon and extra paddle I hadn’t even thought off. Will be looking in to that now. Just wondering what your suggestions would be for packing a kayak without hatches?
I hear this on occasion and I actually have some amsteel ridgelines etc...but to your point, how much stronger does it need to be? If 550 lbs isn't enough for the Ridgeline, Your silpoly tarp is in big trouble. LOL!
Sorry if I'm coming off as negative. I'm here to learn and your videos are great. That just stood out to me because your set up is so high quality in every other way.
@@IcanhearClemFandango You're definitely not wrong! I definitely also have the better options I carry. But but a ton of people have 550 and I know I've spent hundreds of nights under 550 rich line you're rich line so at the end of the day It may not be the best option but it is plenty good. It always has struck me as a little funny how I have got a cord that can withhold almost 2000 pounds of tinsel strength to hold up apaper thin sil poly tarp... lol! But yeah no worries and you are definitely not wrong!
Hi there - Which Resq link ACR do you have? I am a kayaker and a long-time sailor... I,too, know the difference between the Resq link and the Spot. Hands down the better product for rescue.
Do you use anything for cutting firewood? knife saw or axe? Do you bring anything else for fire starting? Do you record everything with your gopros? How do you save battery power while paddling? Cheers
I dont process firewood that way. If I cant pick it up and break it or just throw it on a fire, I dont mess with it. No saws or hatchets etc...When backcountry camping in undeveloped sites, firewood is literally everywhere!
I come back to this video time and time again. Have you used the Sail much I'm interested but have not found a good option after research. What brand are you using if you are using it.
The Garmin etrex 20 will it work with base camp or can you send info from your computer to it, and will it communicate with another Garmin like if your wife needs to know your location. I am kinda clueless on these GPS devices but these multi day trips they would be handy, plus you figure in they are only about the price of a good paddle i can easily sale this to my wife even tho she has some kind of built in radar already Oh either i missed it or you forgot to mention the duffel bag to portage or pack your way out ,like on the Current river in Missouri . Now i see why they are so important to take along.
Hey Pete How's it going man. It's been awhile for me. Awesome video you did man. Always good to review the things you need for the water. I broke both of my feet beginning of the year I'm trying to get back in the kayaking now. Now that it's getting cold looking for some water boots to wear.I have very very wide feet 6 EEEEEE with very fat wide toe. I'm having a very hard time trying to find a pair. Do you know any company by any chance that make water boots that are wide. Again great video man keep up the good work.
Thanks Mack!! Good to hear from you again! I typically just use the NRS River Booties. They are neoprene and have a rubber sole. They might allow for a wider foot. My feet are a little wider than average and I have never had a problem with these. Other than that, I am not sure. Hope this helps!
@@RiverKingsKayak good to hear from you too man. Just been trying to recover from my injuries and get back to work and get back on the water. I'm looking to the NRS River booties. Trying to find something. I wish it would stay warm cuz I would go barefooted 👣 but the wife will not let me. I miss being on the water man.
Hey Pete you still using your etrex? I know you did a video awhile back (I think) on the settings on that but I think an updated version would be helpful unless of course you use something different now. Just an idea 💡
Actually, I couldn't find it going back in the playlist....then I recalled that I think you did it during a trip video and I can't remember which one 😅
Hey Pete! I know you qualified this loadout based on that upcoming adventure. On the Current River washout you carried a much-needed backpack duffel. What was that duffel and where do you stow it in the boat? TIA
Hey PC! I use a Military Duffle and an A-bag (aviator bag). I store them one in the bow hatch and one in the stern. The backpack one is the duffel. You should be able to find one either online or at any military surplus store...
I am looking forward to the trip video. I live near the Catawba in SC. We have a nice long stretch of that river starting in Tega Cay and ending at the lake near Great Falls that we paddle often. My wife is a purely a longboat paddler, and it will be nice to see what is available on the upper Catawba. We've paddled Bridgewater, but that is 1/2 day at most. Also, I am very often accused of 'overpacking'... I know have proof that all that gear is necessary 😆
Right on Brian! I really really wish that the Catawba was not totally choked out by dams for the entirety of the run. Such a resource lost. I know we need drinking water and electricity, but it may be the premiere river in the southeast if it was left intact. We strung together the best sections from up this way for a fantastic weekend!
Pete, do you have any yak suggestions for a beginner paddler looking to get into some multi-day trips? I'm in the Northeast US and was thinking of the WS Tsunami 145 as a possible option. I have experience in lake fish kayaking, but not much more.
@@RiverKingsKayak I’ve been paddling canoes and kayak for a number of years and always enjoy faster moving sections and rapids. Your videos are inspiring me to look at getting a creek boat to learn to paddle rivers that are more technical like your expeditions.
I don't bring either Robert...In a backcountry setting (not in a designated campsite) firewood is usually present in amazing abundance. If I cannot simply break it without much trouble, I look for another piece. Processing wood takes a ton of time, energy and also introduces some of the "best" methods and tools that deliver serious bodily injury when accidents happen. I am definitely not against them, but I just never need them. (and they are usually pretty heavy!) Great question!
Any recommendations on where to get Yukon Expedition replacement parts? I need a new stern hatch seal and everyone who lists it says they’re sold out which I read as unavailable.
I shutter at the thought. They are sooo heavy and soooooooo slooooooow and have almost no performance quality in whitewater. They are indeed incredibly comfortable though! If I was slow floating for fish or going on a lazy float trip on flatwater then that might be good option. We will regularly go 40+ miles a day on our trips and the fishing kayaks simply cant do that.
"ropes hanging everywhere" - I like how you fixed that on the trademark-Prijon-clothesline that runs along the cockpit 🙂

Enjoyed the Live Chat, Pete! Had a lot of un reading all of the jokes! Thanks again!
Me too Brad! I couldn't stop laughing!
Any idea where to get a fire starter like yours? That’s pretty sweet! Man I never seen someone so prepared! You got everything covered!
Not sure. I will look around. My dad got it for me for Christmas one year...it is a great piece of equipment!
Thanks for all the amazing tips! I paddle along a bunch and looking to camp on my own this summer. Rescue beacon and extra paddle I hadn’t even thought off. Will be looking in to that now.
Just wondering what your suggestions would be for packing a kayak without hatches?
Thanks Kelly! I pack my whitewater boat for adventures as well. I just shove the dry bags into the stern...You just have to bring less stuff...
Very nice set up and shop!!
Thanks LAF!
Hay can you make a video about mounting a Insta 360 one x2 including accessories?
I havent messed with the 360 cameras yet...I will look into it!
As a climber getting into paddling, I'd just say ditch the 550 paracord. You can get 3-4mm cord at a local shop that's many times stronger.
I hear this on occasion and I actually have some amsteel ridgelines etc...but to your point, how much stronger does it need to be? If 550 lbs isn't enough for the Ridgeline, Your silpoly tarp is in big trouble. LOL!
@@RiverKingsKayak well, it's half as strong when wet, and half as strong when tied in a knot. For basically the same price, I'd play it safe.
I have the PLB 375 but am upgrading this year.
I bring one of the cold steel trench shovels and keep a good edge on it for wood and stuff it’s small but useful.
Great shakedown thanks!
What make and model is that tandem hanging behind you?
That is a Prijon Yukon Excursion
Didn't see any type of "pee" jug? What do you do when you need to go and can't get out of the boat? Use a water bottle?
After several thousand miles in a kayak, there has never been a situation where I could not get out to pee...
I come back to this video time and time again.
Have you used the Sail much I'm interested but have not found a good option after research. What brand are you using if you are using it.
I don't use it often, but when the wind is right, it is awesome! Windpaddle is the brand
when are you and squirrel, doing a tandem, 3 day kayaking trip? Share the kayak, tent, haha
LOL!! That would be great!!
The Garmin etrex 20 will it work with base camp or can you send info from your computer to it, and will it communicate with another Garmin like if your wife needs to know your location. I am kinda clueless on these GPS devices but these multi day trips they would be handy, plus you figure in they are only about the price of a good paddle i can easily sale this to my wife even tho she has some kind of built in radar already
Oh either i missed it or you forgot to mention the duffel bag to portage or pack your way out ,like on the Current river in Missouri . Now i see why they are so important to take along.
Garmin InReach will communicate...
Canoeing is beneficial for keeping your body fit and healthy.
Right on MaxyelYolm!
Do river booties keep grit pebbles out? I'm having to pull my water shoes off every few minutes to rinse. Neoprene socks maybe?
River booties do a great job of that and neoprene socks help as well!
Hey Pete you still using your etrex? I know you did a video awhile back (I think) on the settings on that but I think an updated version would be helpful unless of course you use something different now. Just an idea 💡
Whoops I guess it wasn't that long ago lol
Actually, I couldn't find it going back in the playlist....then I recalled that I think you did it during a trip video and I can't remember which one 😅
I am using it on longer trips. I do need to do an updated outfitted kayak video.
@@RiverKingsKayak Done and done! Good advice, great video work- thanks for all you do!
Great video man. Can I ask what you're using to mount your etrex?
Thanks PJ! It is a Garmin mount...

Like the GoPro boom nice investment
Thanks Daniel!
Col. Jessup : [refering to Santiago] I felt his life might be in danger.
Kaffee : Grave danger?
Col. Jessup : [sarcastically] Is there another kind?
LOL!!!!
Which stand is your kayak on in this video? Looks nice
A suspenz heavy duty portable stand
Shovel? TP?
ahh yes...of course!
What kind of kayak are you using…size etc…thanks
Prijon Yukon Expedition 14.5'
Great video, thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you!!
Pete, do you have any yak suggestions for a beginner paddler looking to get into some multi-day trips? I'm in the Northeast US and was thinking of the WS Tsunami 145 as a possible option. I have experience in lake fish kayaking, but not much more.
I am currently recommending the dagger Stratos. It is a better boat than the tsunami. The tsunami is good as well.
@@RiverKingsKayak Cool, I'll look into it. Thanks so much! Love those camping and instructional videos!
What is the brand of that yellow dry bag/deck bag?!
Overboard. ua-cam.com/video/uBiVwHuBjEo/v-deo.html
How much weight would you estimate for your camping/food/clothing/etc. items, minus camera gear?
55 lbs
Hey Pete, what kind of drysuit do you use? Also, deciding on gopro or dji osmo. Any experience with the osmo?
NRS Crux on the drysuit. Gopro is the only action cam I have ever used. have used the 4,5,7 & 8
Say with all that gear, did you stay below the max weight design of the boat?
Yes. Probably 80lbs of gear. I weigh 160ish. Boat cap around 400
Where do you purchase your MRE’s?
some surplus stored have them
Where do you get all those Prijons? I've been looking for a Yukon on the west coast but not found a single 1
He he! The struggle is real Spot!! You have to be vigilant and quick! I'm thinking the east coast may have a few more around...
How is your feelings on the Greenland paddles?
not as great for the types of rivers I do, but they are fantastic if you give them a chance on open water.
Hi! Do you have a more detailed list or so off your solar det up?
Indeed, here you go...

River Kings sweet thanks! Hit me up!
Can you post your packing list?
good idea!
@@RiverKingsKayak I’ve been paddling canoes and kayak for a number of years and always enjoy faster moving sections and rapids. Your videos are inspiring me to look at getting a creek boat to learn to paddle rivers that are more technical like your expeditions.
Small Dry bag in a medium dry bag for the sleeping clothes with MREs and water bottles/filter packed as well
Right on Shawn!
Great video!! Thank you!
Thanks a ton Pepper!
You just keep pulling more & more stuff out of that yak... It's like a clown car at the circus.
Hey man, do you have experience with the pyranha Fusion? Or the fusion 2? Tried looking for reviews but simply can't find anything
Never paddled either, but have friends that love them...
@@RiverKingsKayak thanks for the reply, certainly need something for whitewater and large lakes.
What? No washer and dryer? That's just crazy
LOL! it feels that way sometimes!
Good video
Thanks saltyw1!
How much is weight are you floating, with that setup? I am a sea kayaker, at heart. What is the top kayak, behind the green tandem?
It is probably about 75lbs...Hurricane Tracer
I have an old 17' Prijon Kodiak. Holds an amazing amount of gear but weight as much as a Buick when it's empty. What model is the one you're loading?
that is the yukon expedition
Do the dry compartment stay dry are does water soak through from cockpit?
@@terryshort9419 bone dry in mine.
Saw or axe?
I don't bring either Robert...In a backcountry setting (not in a designated campsite) firewood is usually present in amazing abundance. If I cannot simply break it without much trouble, I look for another piece. Processing wood takes a ton of time, energy and also introduces some of the "best" methods and tools that deliver serious bodily injury when accidents happen. I am definitely not against them, but I just never need them. (and they are usually pretty heavy!) Great question!
Only thing I’d add would be some extra toilet paper leaves aren’t for me lol
Leave No Trace please 🌿
Any recommendations on where to get Yukon Expedition replacement parts? I need a new stern hatch seal and everyone who lists it says they’re sold out which I read as unavailable.
I have heard this is a great site for just that...
pathspeakspaddles.com
What boat is that?
Prijon Yukon Expedition.
For some reason I can not find this kayak in the USA.
Where can you purchase these?
So wouldn't a fishing kayak serve you better for camping. More room, more comfort, especially for long distance...
