I was basically like you on reading.
My oldest loves for me to read books to him but absolutely hates the process of reading for himself, plus he says he can’t make the voices like I do and I’m suspecting he doesn’t have an internal voice or ability to make movies in his head like my husband.
We homeschool, don’t have a TV besides for DVDs we choose to watch for homeschool or family time, we have no electronic games, and the only internet he has access to is for Night Zoo Keeper or some educational and food related UA-cam videos. He has ADHD and would much rather be playing LEGO, hiking, biking, or fishing. We also can’t seem to get him over using us as a crutch for reading and despite huge improvements on his fluency reading just a page or two of McGuffey’s readers seems to exhaust him (we had to switch to them and Reading Reflex due to pictures allowing him to correctly guess every sentence).
We do living books for history, geography, Bible study, and some science at a huge variety of grade levels.
    Any other suggestions?
