I used to work with DACs. Surprisingly low tech, just basically a small piston that can fit in your hand. The diamonds are squished together just with a regular set of bolts and a screwdriver.
yeah most people guess something something power laser powered anti matter reactor, nah just a piston some very specifically focused light and some bolts and a screwdriver or two, that where also used for assembly
This makes me wonder what kind of pressures the LHC creates. The collisions happen in tiny areas and they're travelling at near light speed when it happens.
The pressures are probably too extreme for scientists to be able to accurately measure them. Not to mention the fact that these pressures only exist for, like, only quadrillionths of a second.
We represent those particles as little spheres so theorically the area of contact when they collide is 0 (two spheres touch each other on a point) and thus the pressure is infinite, no matter the force btw. In real life spheres deform themselves so they present a real surface of contact depending on their molecular structure. In case of particles it can be quite tricky to suppose they deform themselves and actually the reason is they don't have the shape of a sphere nor have any "shape" at all as they behave in the quantum world where laws are a little different. I'm not an expert, but I don't think we could talk about "pressure" in this case.
Yes, you would not be able to stand in the center of the Earth because of the pressure. Also because it is pretty solidly filled up with molten iron. And also because that iron is liquid. And also because there's basically no gravity at the center of the Earth, as the Earth pulls on you equally from all directions. But yes, the pressure is one of the many reasons you couldn't stand there.

Whatever happened to metallic hydrogen? I last heard that the diamonds shattered and that they lost the sample. Why did research stop? Why didn't they make another one?
Was thinking the same thing. If it's "easy" to get to saturn core pressure, why haven't we discovered metallic hydrogen? Or greatly discouraged its existance.
Neither diamonds nor time on a DAC are cheap. Without solid results (natch), it might take a while to get more funding, and even when they do, it will likely take a while to get new results, get them written up, submit for peer review, etc, etc. The original paper was not well received, because they didn't take some important data readings which may have wrecked the sample even faster, so I think they'll want to be certain that any subsequent papers are credible. That takes time and money

Lovin the sarcasm
The outer core is liquid, but the inner core is solid, so the center of the Earth is solid.
You must be real fun at parties.
I think the heat and lack of oxygen would kill someone long before they reached the core... just sayin’.
The Earth's core is not molten iron, nor liquid. The pressure forces the iron into a solid state, despite the high temperature.
