Here's an idea: If your hard drive has more than one platter, you can put different grits of sandpaper on each one and change the order as you need different grits. This is an amazing project, I'm define try making this

Instead of putting sand paper directly on the platter, you could glue on velcro. Lots of sand paper for actual sanding machines have velcro on the back, meaning that way you could change your grit or replace the paper when it gets worn out without having to peel off the glue.

I mean, you can simply change sand paper, and actually make it more usefull :D

      I have the same problem.
HHD spins up and then stops.
I presume it has to do with the controller chip.
I don't know if it gets an error because the head was removed or because there is no data requested and it spins down.
Has anyone been able to get a solution to this .
I didn't want to build my own drive controller.

because its a split phase motor, that's why he used a switch so he could switch it off then back on after 5 or so seconds (if you look closely at video he is switching it off then on after 5 seconds). if you want to get around that then you need to rip out then circuit board on hard drive then get 30a ESC for brushless motors (you can get them on ebay) then hook that up instead to power it ...
