I would love the "graduation doesn't work on K-pop" video. Like we had multiple attempts that never worked and will be interesting to understand why it doesn't work besides the already know reason that "people only cares for their bias and their bias only"

    • @ninaxcore
      @ninaxcore 9 місяців тому +12

Exactly! When I got into K-pop I was already vaguely familiar with J-pop, and I was pleasantly surprised when I learned that many things that were done first in J-pop got integrated into K-pop, for example fan meetings were done first in the Japanese industry. However one thing I was shocked that failed in K-pop that is common is J-pop is the whole "graduation system". Especially since Japan has the same issue of parasocial relationships with idols like Korea. I don't know how to describe this phenomenon but it's interesting.

That and they only “graduate” members that are already obviously on their way out.

    • @absolutelynotellen
      @absolutelynotellen 9 місяців тому +18

I think the difference might or might not be, jpop graduation system is more like as a stepping stone for new possible careers? ( some jpop idols i know also graduated because health problems or got into scandals though ). But graduation system in kpop is more vague or even comes off as "forced" to me ( nct dream mark's "graduation" ). That's how i saw it though, i might be wrong.

I remember following Bekah on Tumblr and she made a post that made me feel so bad for her. I do believe pledis didn’t treat her right. I’ll never forget reading that post and I hope she’s living her best life right now

@@anseatery I’m going to copy and paste what she said. I hope this helps.
      a little honesty
“ Don’t Hold Your Breath ” by Nicole Scherzinger
This song explain simply what I felt and what was going on inside after all this time.
This isn’t about a boyfriend heartbreak, this is about giving everything you had to the someone’s or something’s and facing the consequences of being taken advantage of.
I just felt that you guys needed some honesty.
I’m so thankful for those who truly cared about me and for those who still do.
I just needed to let it out guys. Believe me, I loved performing and still do but there are things that I could never explain…
When they tell you that you’re not enough. That you quite don’t meet their standards yet. Fuck it. You don’t need that kind of negativity.
In the end it’s about being happy with who you are and what truly is important to you. That in the end, whatever they want from you isn’t important.
      it’s about you.
      peace, love & God Bless
      -b
ps: yes. i just swore. haha i’m not perfect.

I actually prefer after school after Jungah took over as leader. Kahi is incredibly talented, but I think she stood out a little too much in AS, making the group less cohesive. I’d imagine it’s probably because they were trying to replicate pcd’s concept?
Side note: please do a deep dive into after school’s junior, seventeen! I think it’s very amazing how they brought pledis back from ashes and actually managed to climb to the top of the industry. (Also, I’m super impressed by the amount of effort you put into your videos! Thank you for your hard work!!)

The graduation system will never worked in k-pop ever, 9Muses suffered the same fate because of this system (after watching the group's documentary on how they were treated behind the scenes, like treating members like products that they can use and throw and replace them anytime, Sera has spoke up about it), Rania's numerous lineup changes, now with BlackSwan having this won't work, I only hope that DR Music (BlackSwan's agency) stopped using this system, it's just doesn't work, Fatou BlackSwan's current leader had a hard time after Youngheun and Judy (the people who help her during hard times before and after the group debut) left the group, she also said will she ever be open to the new members who were added to BlackSwan, however now they're so close, she also said the current lineup will be fixed and that no member changes

I didn’t get into AS until right after First Love came out. I was excited to continue their journey with them, but disappointed when that ended up being their last Korean release. I would later work backwards and discover the absolute BANGER (pun intended) of Bang! I also loved the Japanese versions of Diva, as well as Heaven and Shh.

First Love is probably my favorite AS era. Pole dancing is deceptively hard (as my sisters bridal party learned!) and the whole EP is fantastic, with “Dressing Room” as the best track IMO.

Man this is such a great series! I would love a video on why graduation systems dont work in Kpop. The only group i can think about that did it is 9Muses (which I would love a deep dive on them if you haven't). Great video as always!

Nine Muses was another group that had a graduation system and that could be covered in a "what the graduation system has not worked in Kpop" video an well done long form video on that topic would be insightful andI'd welcome it. Of course with Nine Muses what happened is you had parts of the fandom split into various factions based around the "era" or lineup of the group and the members supposed talent or perceived lack thereof if one did not like a particular lineup. Off topic but I've always found it interesting that a group had it's own internal "hatedom" based on which lineup was current.

I haven't find the time to watch part one yet but I wanted to thank you for covering the history of this group. I love them so much and they are iconic but I feel like especially in the West, they're not talked as much as some of their peers of the same era even though they were truly huge in South Korea at some point.

Thank you for your hard work! This was a phenomenal series! 🥰
Shampoo was my FAV era, that song just makes me feel like rainbows, glitter and unicorns lmaoo! Their whole discography was and still is amazing to me!
I was so sad when both Kahi and Bekah left :( Pledis doesn't know how to properly manage their artist. *cough* Pristin *cough* 🙃 I'm happy that SVT survived the company to become a huge success. [Thanks to Woozi taking on the musical direction for them]
Their disbandment was so awkward.... it felt like they milked them for their talents especially Kahi and kind of just tossed them to the side. Everything just stopped after First Love era. I was so ready for another comeback only for things to fall short. Hoping they can reunite one day just for a concert with all the members🤞🏾

I'm always fascinated by your "The History Of" videos. As someone who got into the genre only in the past five or so years, this series has been crucial to learning more about these groups. This channel introduced me to groups like Rainbow, Stellar, Boyfriend, DalShabet, and so on. Thank you, truly.
Maybe one group to possibly cover could be Girl's Day? They're a group I see a lot of when roaming the webs, but know nothing about and have a hard time knowing where to begin with them.

There were a reasons why Gaeun was chosen as the 9th member of the group
1.) Japanese skills: AS’s popularity was dropping in Korea (beacause of the other 2.5 gen groups like f(x) being super popular) and Pledis had financial problems, but they were still very popular in Japan. They need to secure the Japanese market, so they desperately need someone that speaks Japanese more fluently.
2.) Singing skills: In one of the interviews, Gaeun mentioned she was chosen by Kahi to join the group because of her strong vocal among trainees. But for some reasons she joined as a rapper more than a vocalist, I think it’s mostly because she had to fill in for Bekah and Kahi’s lines
3.) Dance skills: Because Kahi was planning to debut solo and graduate from the group, so they need someone who can dance nearly as good as Kahi. Although Gaeun is my ultimate bias in K-pop, I do admit that her dance skill was not as good as Kahi. But it was certain that she was one of the best dancer in AS, especially due to her being a new member she had to learn a lot of new dance routines and memorize new formations and such. She worked really hard to fill in the spot and I’m so proud of her!!!
