First time I heard this was at a farm after my friends funeral. Dave and I were old deadheads and tour buds for 20 plus years. After the funeral, all his friends and family gathered at someones farm and had a picnic in the warm spring sun. Of course rhere was a lot a Dead playing and story telling. Daves 15 year old son then gets up and cranked this song. Joyful, beautiful. The song had us smiling and dancing and I couldn't have thought of a better send off for Dave than this. Eithout fail, brings a smile to my heart everytime i hear it.
If you love it, why not try out a few more of their songs? If you like bouncing, I'd bet dollars to donuts you'd also like Fee. That's another great Phish introduction song that hooks a lot of people.
I didn't do Phish because my housemate played them exclusively and relentlessly. One day she storms downstairs, demands I sit down in the living room and listen to a song, this one. Almost 30 years of Phish joy since. Thank you, Nicole!
That might be the biggest under statement in music history! But cool you found this version. Them, the dead and kiss have to be experienced live and even though i have them never ever listen to their studio albums. Check out a dead song from 1978 in San Fransisco on Dec 28th. Shakedown street, best version you will ever here and you ll swear Garcia and Anastasio are related some how! Lol
First time I heard/saw this was River port In St. Louis. They opened for Santana and if you wore a tie dye you got $10 off your ticket. They played this and sent beach balls flying everywhere. It was musical magic. Thank you Phish
@@liammahoney1782 Yes! Life was so good, I saw more Dead shows honestly. But was at their Who Halloween show (faked us out with Michael Jackson) as I'm from the heart of IL and we dosed and threw glitter on everything everyone ...my only regret lol
I'd always wondered why there was such a big cheer right at the start of the "round" section of the song until I saw this video and realized it was because of the isolated spotlight on Mike. One of the coolest things about getting really into a particular band is how much you love the band as a whole, but also love the band members as individuals. This moment - where the crowd gets to give an ovation to one member of the band on a predictable basis - is just so touching to me, and so much fun every time it happens.
Love this clip - simple but strong video and sonically outstanding - I love the crowd's backing (or rather lead) vocals on the 1st and 2nd verses (but I guess you'd expect nothing less from MSG) This is a real gem.
I remember listening to multiple audio versions of this and thinking "Why does the crowd always cheer really loud when they start the round section?" and then I watched this video and saw that it's because Mike is solo in a spotlight. I love how people in the jam scene love their bands but ALSO love the individual members of the band so much.
There’s no bad Phish songs IMO. Have you ever listened to full concerts of theirs? Or do you just just bounce from track to track. I bet you’d enjoy Phish if you realize they have over 100+ to 200 songs they can bust out at any given moment at a live show, which makes the way they craft their short studio tracks into amazing live performances that include improvised jams that lead to perfect segues into the next song. It sounds to me you need to give them more of a chance.

for when my hand was holding hers

the place I sought was far beneath, the surface of the sea
my sight was poor, but I was sure
the sirens sang their song for me
they dance above me as I sink
I see them through a crystal haze
and hear the sweet sound bouncing round
the neverending coral maze,
the crystal haze,
and hear the bouncing round the room
the neverending coral maze
