    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
    Hey, I could really use your help.
    If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
    A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
    Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    Being a Dad myself, I can use all the Dad jokes I can get. Sometimes I get a grin or a ‘courtesy smile’, but once in a while I see a genuine smile or laugh.
    Thanks, Dr.!

    I like that you explain when you need to be specific with the handshapes and when you don't, because sometimes hand shapes are VERY important and change the whole meaning of what you're trying to sign. I've learned that a time or two, trying to learn ASL. I mixed up bad and good and accidently signed "Bad morning!" very cheerfully to some poor deaf person at my church 🤦‍♀. Thankfully they knew what I was trying to say and corrected me.

      The other day I tried taking a deaf customer's name for her order, and when she fingerspelt it she went too fast for me and I completely wrote down the wrong name. I still feel embarrassed 😅 I wrote Jenny but I'm pretty sure looking back I saw 2 "L"s in her name 😢 Still don't know what her name is. Next time I'll ask the person I'm speaking to to repeat themselves 😅

    Thank you for this! I'm an ER nurse and my hospital refuses to hire an ASL interpreter (despite the law) for the night shift. Everyone relies on me and I'm NOT fluent enough for that and I'm sure it frustrates our Deaf patients. I tell the patient immediately that I am NOT an interpreter and let them know that they are free to write things or have someone in their life to interpret if they'd prefer. Is there more that I need to be doing? Anyway I've been using the "need get blood why? test", which takes forever, so I'm glad to now know that "draw blood" is its own, much faster sign! I hope to someday be fluent enough to be an interpreter and your videos are AMAZINGLY helpful!! Thank you!!!

    This is great, I work in a hospital and these are all good ASL words to know. So far I commonly use "hi my name is (fingerspell), may I see your wristband?" And I know some other basic words but I really wish I knew nurse and blood last week. Can you teach us the words for xray, cat scan, ultrasound, do you need anything and would you like a blanket?

    So "draw blood" carries over into ASL.

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  2 роки тому +5

      The sign "draw blood" in ASL is more along the lines of "vacuum blood out of arm" (which is what I showed as the punchline of the joke) than "drawing" a picture of blood with a crayon.
      Dad jokes are often based on puns. Puns often are (semi) funny due to deliberately misusing a word and causing the audience to have to make a mental leap to understand the intended meaning.

      Hmmm -- that would be an interesting challenge.
      Excuse the caps = gloss.
      NUMBER SIX IX-(it) (right) AFRAID (gaze left) IX-(it) left NUMBER SEVEN
      WHY?
      REASON-(rhetorical)?
      SEVEN EIGHT! NINE
      WHAT!?!-(lexicalized)
      SEVEN EAT-(left-hand) EIGHT-(right-hand) NINE!
      HAHA-(lexicalized)
      -------------
      It might work with enough contrastive structure (use of left and right side) indexing, ambidextrous signing, etc. Will try it on Bee and if I can get a solid groan, head-slap, or unlikely laugh -- I might attempt inflicting it on my channel audience.
      In any case, I appreciate your interest and comment!

    That was cute, thank you! I do have a question though. In other foreign languages these jokes wouldn't translate well because they would have a different word for "draw" in both contexts. I thought that would be the same in ASL because there are different signs for "draw" as well. Most of my Deaf friends also know English so they would get this and other word puns. But would you call this an ASL joke? Or is it more a "bilingual" joke, and those who only know ASL, or are looking at the joke with the mindset of looking for pure ASL, wouldn't get it? I hope that question made sense!

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  2 роки тому +9

      Let's consider your question by asking a question:
      Is there a difference between
      “an ASL joke,”
      versus
      “a joke in ASL”?
      To which I would certainly answer, “Yes, there is a difference.”
      ”An ASL joke” tends to refer to the content being in some way directly related to ASL.
      ”A joke in ASL” tends to refer to the modality.
      Regarding a joke such as: “Why do nurses like red crayons? Sometimes they need to draw blood!”
      I call that a “Dad Joke in ASL.”
      I would not call it an “ASL joke.” Nor would I call it a “Deaf Joke.”
      My son (an NCO in the Army) texted me a “military joke.” (How long does it take a Russian tank to drive from Moscow to Kyiv? Depends how many people are pushing!!)
      The joke involves the topic of Russia but it is not a Russian Joke.
      It is a Ukrainian (or any non-Russian military or other involved party) joke about the Russian military. If told in English then it is a “Ukrainian joke (about Russia’s military) in English.”
      My wife and I discussed the same joke recently in ASL. Thus the joke became a “Ukrainian joke (about Russia’s military) in ASL.” It was not an ASL joke.
      An ASL joke would be more along the lines of the “PLEASE BUT” joke in which a Deaf person writes a note to a train conductor to “please but” (with the double meaning of “raise the crossing gate arms”). The joke is sometimes embellished to “please move your but” which insinuates “please move your butt.” It is fascinating that the “PLEASE BUT” joke is a very well established Deaf joke, ASL joke, and also directly plays on the English word “but” and its relationship to the sign “BUT” as well as the fact that “BUT” and “train crossing gates rising” look the same. We don’t call that joke a bilingual joke. We call it a Deaf joke because it originates in and is primarily told by and/or owned by the Deaf community. We could call it an ASL joke because an aspect of ASL is directly tied to the punchline.
      Dad jokes (that originate in English) tend to require the audience to be bilingual when told in some other language. Some (English-originated) dad jokes will succeed well or easily in ASL - some won’t.
      We tend to label or name joke types based on saliency.
      The word “salient” means “most noticeable or important.”
      A “dad joke” that originates in English and is told in ASL is still foremost a “dad joke” regardless of the fact that it may require bilingual competence to be understood. Thus we could say that “Dad jokes that originate in English and are told in ASL -- often require bilingual competency.”
      There is absolutely no doubt that to get (understand) most of the jokes in the “Dad Jokes in ASL” series a person needs to be bilingual.
      It is a good thing then that the vast majority of Deaf Americans are -- to some extent -- bilingual.
      (As you have pointed out: Most of your Deaf friends know English.)
      The simple fact is that the written language of the North American Deaf Community is “English.” This is so well established as to not be arguable.
      The National Association of the Deaf’s website contains extensive amounts of English. So does the Gallaudet University website. Every residential state-run school for the Deaf in the nation endeavors to teach their Deaf students how to read and write English. Those of us (Deaf) who attend theater based movies in the U.S. use English-based subtitles or captioning. We watch TV using English-based captioning.
      Definition: "diglossia" -- a situation in which two languages or dialects are used within a community, often by the same speakers (or signers).
      North American Deaf Community members live in a state of diglossia. We are a diglossic community.
      So, again, when a “dad joke” is told in ASL I would call it a “Dad joke in ASL.”

      @@sign-language Very in depth and informative response, thank you! To be honest I read the title too fast and it didn't sink in, if I had taken a second I would have seen "Dad joke in ASL" and not immediately thought "ASL Dad joke", which is what I think my brain did. Those are cute and I do them with my friends, like "nice to MEAT you" :-). I would love to find more ASL or Deaf jokes to help my expansion of knowledge of the language and culture, so unless you have any suggestions I'll make sure to put the right key words in while searching. Thanks so much, keep up the amazing work!

    That was funny!!! So you don't need to sign "blood". Is that because you are signing it from the arm?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  2 роки тому +5

      That is correct.
      The meaning of the "draw-blood" sign already includes the concept of blood -- so in context there is no need to add a separate sign.

    Most people are right handed. So does signing meaning change using the left hand?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  2 роки тому

      Left-handed people generally sign as a mirror image of that done by right-handed people with no change in the meaning of the signs. There are some situations involving specifying locations that will require slight adjustments. For example, if a person wants to indicate that they have pain in a location on one side the body then the sign is done at that location regardless of handedness.
