There is a part two of Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault when after being awaken, Sleeping Beauty and the Prince tied the knot and had twin children. Afterwards they went to go see the prince’s parents at his palace. The Prince’s mother is surprisingly an ogress and his father married her for wealth. Anyways, when the queen mother saw that her son is married, she became jealous and paranoid that her grandchildren will overthrow her. So she decided to eat both her grandchildren and daughter-in-law! She orders her cook to butcher the twins but thankfully the kind hearted cook hid the children away and instead served two lambs. As the queen mother eats her supper, she then orders the cook to also kill Sleeping Beauty. But again, the cook hides her away and instead served a hind. When realizing that she is tricked, the queen mother finally decides to throw Sleeping Beauty, the twins and the cook into a pit full of poisonous reptiles. But thankfully the prince’s father, the good king arrived from the war and throws his ogress wife into the pit instead. And everybody else lived happily ever after.

I was a bit surprised you interpreted the prick as the sexual awakening and period. I always interpreted it as losing virginity, since she gets pricked by all kinds of phallix objects in the stories and then bleeds. Then there is the whole on no we need to keep these away from her i.e. preserving her virginity, but then she makes a mistake and gets pricked anyway. I wish I could say I was surprised by the fact that rape, statutory and otherwise, being not just unpunished but actually rewarded in these tales but, alas, such has been the bleak reality for women and girls through the ages.
One of the biggest misconceptions is the Knights code of Chivalry, which actually endorses such behaviour - so long as the girl doesn't "belong" to another knight.
Actually, back then, a girl was considered old enough to marry and start spitting out kids as young as 12 or 13. Even way older men, like, 40 years or more older!
Children could be betrothed from birth, they were often married at around 12 so the new family ties would officially come into effect asap, any older and one of the parties may change their mind or the girl may no longer be a maiden. A 12yo girl could be married to someone 60yrs old or even 6yrs old (If it were a noble or political union). The reality was that they would normally wait four or five years before they had children, it was very unusual to have kids at 12, especially since there were high mortality risks to young women giving birth.

A fascinating deep dive into the tale, and its sources. But what struck me most were the versions that included eating the children, which made me think of Titus Andronicus, and the myth of Procne and Philomela. I think it was possibly too distracting from the point of the story, which is why it got dropped by the Grimms and later versions. Very well done.

What's with the common theme of sexualizing dead women? Even the true story of the queen had people kissing and taking souvenirs. And the theme of men being somehow victim to beauty, so that they weren't held fully responsible. 🤷🏽♀️
Sun, Moon and Thalia has always been a rather interesting and complex tale to analyze, in greater depth, the theme of the children and Thalia's murder, by the jealous queen, reminds me of the Greek myths of Hera chasing the lovers and children of Zeus, the element of vengeful women is very present there, nice video gurl ✨😊
The king eating his children reminds me of a Shakespeare play - can't recall the name of the play - but it certainly makes Shakespeare's use of violence make more sense, given the tales that must have been circulating around him for all his life..
Shakespeare would also have known the Greek and Roman stories of the gods and titans, one of whom ate his own children. This is a very old part of stories and mythologies.
I think there are quite a few 'original' european fairy tales which involve fathers unknowingly eating their children, it's probably some symbolism we're too modern to pick up on
Great research done here, plus lots of beautiful images used! I had read a similar version of Sleeping Beauty impregnated while she sleeps; interesting how in each of these versions, it's the baby, not the prince, who awakens her, as if emphasizing woman's maternal fate. As you note, it's also HIGHLY problematic. The Charles Perrault 17th-century version of the story is somewhat similar to the one of Talia, only in the Perrault one it's the Prince's mother who, jealous of her new daughter-in-law, insists on having not only the 2 small children but also the young woman killed and cooked for the Prince's mother herself to eat. Fortunately it ends with little damage done (but it might lead to some weird mother-in-law jokes!).
Another fine presentation. What really interested me was how Flax seemed to be the common thread throughout all of these tales. Besides these guys having a go with a young girl who could not say no.
Sun, Moon, and Talia has some interesting features, especially the cannibalism. This taboo meal shows up in the story of Atli (Atilla), Thyests and Atreus, Lycaon (notably these have head, hands, and feet revealed to to cannibal), among others. Variations also include the Biblical story of the statue of Dagon. In Judaism the priestly ritual had an echo of this in blood applied to the earlobe, finger, and toe. In some stories the cannibalized figure is associated with Orion (who’s head, hands, and feet are features of the constellation). In the Orion related stories the victim is often eaten by a wolf (or transformed into a wolf after eating). The Hyades was depicted as a wolf (also a bull and serpent). In Arcadia a ritual was enacted where a stew would be corrupted with a piece of sacrificed shepherd boy (likely lamb). The unfortunate who had the flesh in their stew was driven off to wolf lake to live as a wolf for several years. If he abstained from further cannibalism as a wolf, he could return to society when his term ended. One further branch of this is found with the Norse Daedalus, Volund the Smith. Traditions of smiths as wolves were fairly wide spread (like the Greek Telchine). A remnant of the association was Volund’s home in the wolf dales. And of course, little Red Riding Hood.
More likely, if Sun, Moon and Talia was based on Catherine because of her exaltation by Shakespeare, that the cannibalism part of the story came from his Titus And Andronicus, given the story is lifted as told in that play, and he was still part of "pop culture". The rest is also interesting, but folk stories are not based on an academic perusal of a story that most would never have heard of, but more on retellings of popular tales, reworked by different tellers (I mean, even Troyes' Lancelot was essentially a fanfic addon of the Arthurian saga mixed with a popular French tale).

Another amazing video and such an odd story. My daughter who is 5 is obsessed with Disney Princesses and both Sleeping Beauty and Snow White have this theme of a princess being poisoned or cursed into Sleep and awaken by the kiss of a Prince. The princess even in the Disney versions have almost identical personalities and are the perfect feminine ideal for the male dominant culture.

I didn't realize before how many of the Sleeping Beauty stories involve spinning. Given that spinning was such an integral and vital part of an adult woman's duties back then (so much so that terms exist like "distaff side") I wonder if part of the idea is that you can't stop a girl from becoming a woman and reaching out for her role (as thought of back then) as wife and mother.

On the other hand maybe what inspired the vampire only a legend is far more complicated than that. So be careful with how you spend your time and energy too. Good thing there is such things as what is called mechanical lifts and forklifts too. Otherwise we would have maybe all ended up being incorruptible dodies to be thrown into an incinerator for free in a scheme called socialism. Who needs a magical kiss when you have 'magical' mechanical help at work for long hours to get by well enough amid all of the socialists around at the time. I wonder who all holds the many patents required to invent those machines too now. Did a lot of those patent holders like a Mr. Nicola Tesla too maybe end up incinerated when no longer able to figure out how to keep on lifting and inventing and lifting again? Too bad Nicola Tesla didn't figure out how to invent hearing aids for himself too. If Nicola Tesla had got to invent and use hearing aids for himself worth buying at all in his old age then he could have continued to team up with women inventors too. Women inventors who were like his mom. As he got older it is possible that because he was losing his hearing in the higher frequencies slowly over time that was why he in his old age began to feel only annoyed when having to work with women inventors too. Who knows. If that had not been true maybe he would not have died sick and penniless only because a cord made of three threads is far stronger.

Couple of issues The Parents couldnt be bothered to keep her locked in her room on her 15th Birthday with guards everywhere? No, they had to go on a trip on the day the curse was to happen. Poor planning. Probably had a nonrefundable down payment at a resort or a time share. Had the Prince not been good looking he would have been thrown in the dungeon for a non-consensual assault and breaking and entering(the castle, not her). Luckily he was cute. And a prince.

It could be that they didn't have locks upon the doors, after all it's meant to be taking place in a royal castle and the king believes that all of the spindles have been destroyed plus it's likely that they thought the safest place for her would be the castle and there be eyes on her everywhere
You are so good at telling fairy tales. Be careful who you allow near you when telling them. Some people can become so jealous and envious of someone with any kind of outstanding compared to them talent they want to destroy it. So be careful who you build anything with too.
The 13thy fairy/wise women wasn't evil at first. She was just hurt and angry. Well understandable. Even as a child I wondered, why they dind't just make anoter golden plate. It was a king for heavens sake and they had plenty of time to prepare... And it's another tale in which the kiss doesn't do much. The prince just had a very good timing 😂

BTW, the way you did this video is surprisingly similar to an old TV show that aired on A&E called, "Ancient Mysteries". I own a 4 DVD set called "Myths & Legends" and the narrator talks in a manner similar to how you talk in this video. I'm going to have to subscribe to your channel just to see the true stories behind the numerous "Fairy Tales".
I've been to the castle that Sleeping Beauty and the family was written about. It's absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous and it even has some Sleeping Beauty by Disney mockup scenery in some of the castle rooms locked up so you can't enter them. You can enter a lot of the other rooms though. It's such an amazing place

What was unexpected to me was the connection between Brunhhilde and Perseus, and so indirectly to Medusa. So far, my favorite version is Maleficent which shows the blending of the light and dark into balance which is similar to Medusa's journey.

You're thinking of Titus Andronicus. There are stories of Caligula cutting open his sister/wife/victim and eating their child.

Great research done here, plus lots of beautiful images used! I had read a similar version of Sleeping Beauty impregnated while she sleeps; interesting how in each of these versions, it's the baby, not the prince, who awakens her, as if emphasizing woman's maternal fate. As you note, it's also HIGHLY problematic. The Charles Perrault 17th-century version of the story is somewhat similar to the one of Talia, only in the Perrault one it's the Prince's mother who, jealous of her new daughter-in-law, insists on having not only the 2 small children but also the young woman killed and cooked for the Prince's mother herself to eat. Fortunately it ends with little damage done (but it might lead to some weird mother-in-law jokes!).
Another fine presentation. What really interested me was how Flax seemed to be the common thread throughout all of these tales. Besides these guys having a go with a young girl who could not say no.
A little-known factoid is that Rip Van Winkle's many great's ancestor was Sleeping Beauty.

Sun, Moon, and Talia has some interesting features, especially the cannibalism. This taboo meal shows up in the story of Atli (Atilla), Thyests and Atreus, Lycaon (notably these have head, hands, and feet revealed to to cannibal), among others. Variations also include the Biblical story of the statue of Dagon. In Judaism the priestly ritual had an echo of this in blood applied to the earlobe, finger, and toe. In some stories the cannibalized figure is associated with Orion (who’s head, hands, and feet are features of the constellation). In the Orion related stories the victim is often eaten by a wolf (or transformed into a wolf after eating). The Hyades was depicted as a wolf (also a bull and serpent). In Arcadia a ritual was enacted where a stew would be corrupted with a piece of sacrificed shepherd boy (likely lamb). The unfortunate who had the flesh in their stew was driven off to wolf lake to live as a wolf for several years. If he abstained from further cannibalism as a wolf, he could return to society when his term ended. One further branch of this is found with the Norse Daedalus, Volund the Smith. Traditions of smiths as wolves were fairly wide spread (like the Greek Telchine). A remnant of the association was Volund’s home in the wolf dales. And of course, little Red Riding Hood.
More likely, if Sun, Moon and Talia was based on Catherine because of her exaltation by Shakespeare, that the cannibalism part of the story came from his Titus And Andronicus, given the story is lifted as told in that play, and he was still part of "pop culture".
The rest is also interesting, but folk stories are not based on an academic perusal of a story that most would never have heard of, but more on retellings of popular tales, reworked by different tellers (I mean, even Troyes' Lancelot was essentially a fanfic addon of the Arthurian saga mixed with a popular French tale).
I knew about Sun, Moon, and Talia but a lot of the rest of this was news to me. LOVED the stuff about Catherine of Valois cause I have always found her very interesting! Loved it and can't wait for the next video!
I love deep dives into these stories. As much as I love the children's versions, it's lots of fun to go back even further to get to the deepest roots of the stories and learn some things.

Another amazing video and such an odd story. My daughter who is 5 is obsessed with Disney Princesses and both Sleeping Beauty and Snow White have this theme of a princess being poisoned or cursed into Sleep and awaken by the kiss of a Prince. The princess even in the Disney versions have almost identical personalities and are the perfect feminine ideal for the male dominant culture.

I didn't realize before how many of the Sleeping Beauty stories involve spinning. Given that spinning was such an integral and vital part of an adult woman's duties back then (so much so that terms exist like "distaff side") I wonder if part of the idea is that you can't stop a girl from becoming a woman and reaching out for her role (as thought of back then) as wife and mother.

🙂The phrase "incorruptible dodies" is interesting. Maybe you are right by writing spur instead of inspire. On the other hand maybe what inspired the vampire only a legend is far more complicated than that. So be careful with how you spend your time and energy too. Good thing there is such things as what is called mechanical lifts and forklifts too. Otherwise we would have maybe all ended up being incorruptible dodies to be thrown into an incinerator for free in a scheme called socialism. Who needs a magical kiss when you have 'magical' mechanical help at work for long hours to get by well enough amid all of the socialists around at the time. I wonder who all holds the many patents required to invent those machines too now. Did a lot of those patent holders like a Mr. Nicola Tesla too maybe end up incinerated when no longer able to figure out how to keep on lifting and inventing and lifting again? Too bad Nicola Tesla didn't figure out how to invent hearing aids for himself too. If Nicola Tesla had got to invent and use hearing aids for himself worth buying at all in his old age then he could have continued to team up with women inventors too. Women inventors who were like his mom. As he got older it is possible that because he was losing his hearing in the higher frequencies slowly over time that was why he in his old age began to feel only annoyed when having to work with women inventors too. Who knows. If that had not been true maybe he would not have died sick and penniless only because a cord made of three threads is far stronger.

Utterly fascinating!! This is the first time I’ve seen even a minor reference to Anne Rice’s (she used another word which escapes me at the moment) Sleeping Beauty series (I don’t recommend it). But apparently she learned of or read something about this. Kudos for this, Resurrectionist.
I read the Anne Rice series when I was in college 20+ years ago and it made enough of an impression that I can still remember a lot of details... It would be interesting to re-read.

Couple of issues
The Parents couldnt be bothered to keep her locked in her room on her 15th Birthday with guards everywhere? No, they had to go on a trip on the day the curse was to happen. Poor planning. Probably had a nonrefundable down payment at a resort or a time share.
Had the Prince not been good looking he would have been thrown in the dungeon for a non-consensual assault and breaking and entering(the castle, not her). Luckily he was cute. And a prince.

It could be that they didn't have locks upon the doors, after all it's meant to be taking place in a royal castle and the king believes that all of the spindles have been destroyed plus it's likely that they thought the safest place for her would be the castle and there be eyes on her everywhere

The 13thy fairy/wise women wasn't evil at first. She was just hurt and angry. Well understandable. Even as a child I wondered, why they dind't just make anoter golden plate. It was a king for heavens sake and they had plenty of time to prepare...
And it's another tale in which the kiss doesn't do much. The prince just had a very good timing 😂

BTW, the way you did this video is surprisingly similar to an old TV show that aired on A&E called, "Ancient Mysteries". I own a 4 DVD set called "Myths & Legends" and the narrator talks in a manner similar to how you talk in this video. I'm going to have to subscribe to your channel just to see the true stories behind the numerous "Fairy Tales".

I've been to the castle that Sleeping Beauty and the family was written about. It's absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous and it even has some Sleeping Beauty by Disney mockup scenery in some of the castle rooms locked up so you can't enter them. You can enter a lot of the other rooms though. It's such an amazing place

What was unexpected to me was the connection between Brunhhilde and Perseus, and so indirectly to Medusa. So far, my favorite version is Maleficent which shows the blending of the light and dark into balance which is similar to Medusa's journey.
