Fishing for Salmon In Ireland Is Tough This Year! River Moy

- The ups and downs of a few mornings salmon fishing the Weir and Ridge Pool on the River Moy, Ballina.
With a new baby I missed most of the spring salmon season and the first big run of grilse so I was keen to chase some salmon on the fly in mid July.
Nobody can deny it, salmon fishing has been very difficult across the Island of Ireland this year, this video sums up about the luck that I've had this year. I shared a rod with a friend and we fished 3 mornings. The beat combines the Weir pool and the famous Ridge pool, totally 6 rods. so for our 3 mornings, a total of 18 rods on one of the most productive beats in Europe landed a whopping...2 fish!
The lack of salmon made it tough but on top of this, the pool was constantly being hammered by seals, even at low tide and a few kayakers pushed their luck coming into the pool without paying their dues.
On the plus side, most grilse this year seem bigger than last year's tiny fish.
That said ...once a fish is landed all will be forgiven and that's why be all love salmon fishing 😅

Oh Sean, 2 months ! Jackie Charlton is a legend, Back in the 80s as a boy apprentice I worked in a large garage panel shop, jackie's Mercedes was in for body repairs after a back end bump. he came in to get his fishing gear from the boot, so a few of the lads left what they were doing to go chat with him. The boot wouldn't open due to the damage, and his words to the panel beaters there, "Don't care what you do to it, just get my gear out the boot". Aye 2 months while my mates were hitting springers and big early grilse, wouldn't change it for the world though 👌 I only fished alongside Jack once, I remember him telling my father he dropped 7 fish that day....he wasn't too happy 😂 An honoury Irish man 👍
Gonna get a lot tougher as time goes by.

When you hit it right, and there are a few salmon about it can be deadly. Love fishing all the different streams waiting for that thump from a salmon

He was the only person in the world who had a permanent rod on the beat and had a house in Ballina. It's fly only unless high water. I think those mornings were around 1 to 2cm below the marker
It's not just Ireland it's tough in this year been a struggle in Scotland also.

@SeanWoodsFishing we can only hope. There has been 9 hooked and 9 lost on the beauly association water this year so even when there are fish they aren't sticking.
Might be better years ahead, you never know , i lost 3 or 4 , landed 1 last week and probably a month of rain to come 😂😂

And then all is forgiven after the next fish 😅
Are people stealing fish still a problem over there.
Poaching is still ongoing, in every sense on the river. There's still netting throughout the system and there are still 100s if not 1000s of untagged rod caught fish every year too.

Some people have no shame at all .we have a problem all over the the country with eastern Europeans wiping ponds lakes and they hammer rivers they know what they are doing but don't care.Northeast England was hit badly by them .The EA have caught a few English blokes from Sunderland Gill netting salmon they got caught thankfully.More needs to be done to protect salmon and sea trout.
