what a genius!!! and thank god (or whoever) that i´ve seen him live with band in 1997 and this year solo w/ dean white. 2hrs gooseflesh, i will never forget that in my life.
One of those songs that haunt me and come back to me over and over very few touch me in such a fashion and Mr Sullivan made such an Epic song here worthy of a symphony orchestra I think it's that good.
I wonder how Justin Sullivan became so transfixed by the sea. I'm glad it became his muse because the burden of holding together the sanity of the rest of us might break him. But he always has the sea to return to as a theme and he writes some of his most beautiful songs as that excellent video demonstrates. I admit I don't know much about Yorkshire but it sounds like the hardest part of the UK's extremely hard North. Yes I'm aware it's an island which gives it a more intimate connection to the sea but no man seems more captivated by it than Sullivan and music is the better for it.
Depends on the town some places are full of drunks and crime due to drug dealers so yeah it can be a hard nasty place to live in some parts but so mind bogglingly beautiful out in the dales away from the decrepit industrial hell holes the industrial revolution built or some of the seaside little towns still with their lovely cottages and cobbled streets. Yorkshire being the biggest county in England has a very broad variance between gentrified areas vs the neglected towns that were once like Bradford where me and Mr Sullivan were born and bred Capitals of their industries. Bradford was once capital of the wool trade and you can see the old incredible warehouse's in little Germany there. Such a shame so many parts of Yorkshire just don't have the money invested into them to regain their potential and glory of the Industrial revolutions past. There is a Waterstones bookstore there refit from the Wool Exchange it used to be, just yet another incredibly building that are many around Yorkshire and the UK that could revival anything London has to offer. If your into Architecture and learning about the Industrial revolution then the "hard" North is where it all began. Also Darlington is not a long train ride away to see the place where the Steam locomotive was born.
@@iongriffis2435 Are you familiar with Bradford by any chance ? I was watching a short NMA documentary and Justin Sullivans wife/partner was talking about how when she was younger Bradford was a very regal and almost smugly prosperous city. Then its key industry (textiles I believe ?) collapsed and in less than 10 years it had become a very dangerous and desperately poor city with almost a siege mentality. No surprise the city she was describing and that I saw became a major prowling ground for the Yorkshire Ripper. As an American I have long lost count of cities which have fallen from the American Dream ideal onto very hard times. What struck me was the rapidity with which it happened to Bradford if her recollections are accurate. In the life of a city ten years is the blink of an eye. Do you know the place well enough to agree or disagree with her point of view ? And if it did happen so swiftly then why ? I confess I’m such an NMA stalwart that they feel more like family to me than a band. Or a way of life and whole philosophy of living maybe. So I’m really interested in their roots and the type of place that would produce a songwriter like Justin Sullivan and how. If you can shed any light on what coming from Bradford means I can promise you I will read it with avid interest. Truth is we need many many more men like him in the USA. Our vision of the authentic and genuine ‘Everyman’ got stuck somewhere way back with Bruce Springsteen. Bruce is ok and has my respect but in no way do his lyrics speak directly to me and my own life as Justin Sullivans.
Mesmerizing song, absolutely spellbinding. And this is one of the very rare instances where the video just about equals the song. Excellent! I love the ocean. It's hard to believe I haven't seen it for nine years, since November 23rd 2002 in Ocean City here in Maryland in the US. I remember the date because my wife and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary that day. Gotta go back sometime soon, for sure.
@NewModelArmyBlue : Glad you enjoyed the video :) This is easily my favorite New Model Army song ~ it's just so beautiful. I love pretty much all of their other music too.
Hi John, so glad you liked it! It is a calming song, isn't it? My Dad introduced me to New Model Army a few weeks ago, and I'm really enjoying their music.
When I first saw NMA live 35 years ago they were raw folk punk band, they have so much musical talents now and can't wait to see them live again in Glasgow in November, Justin is a lyrical genius!
i knew it ! , this on the tv series *High Country (2024)* rgwewa an except on the last episode , only a vit but i didnt see the credits Thanks justin & freinds
This song is one of my favorite and it is one of the reasons that inspired me to write my song "Married The Ocean" (check out on UA-cam, thank you!). Thank you Justin & NMA for all the years of great, uplifting, motivating and inspiring music!

I don't post much, but as a long-time NMA fan, I have to say that was beautiful and so strong. Thank you.
