The secret of reducing spice is to eat with rice. The spice is there to chase the rice.

Welcome to Malaysia Marshall and Sabrina. Marshall is correct when he said "it is going to be an amazing city, amazing country and so much to see". The hotel U were staying is owned by Tune Hotels, an associate company of AirAsia. It is a pretty decent hotel with good amenities and clean rooms. Nyonya food is widely available in Penang, and U should visit Melaka too after Penang, a historical city down south, about 2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur. I saw your profile stating that U guys are from Colorado. I used to stay in Aurora in the Summer of 1982 and moved to Greeley in the Fall of 83 until the Spring of 86. I am your new Malaysian subscriber from KL. Enjoy your stay in Malaysia.

Love your enthusiasm for travel and trying new things! There's plenty of food in Penang/Malaysia that are not spicy like kuey teow soup, wonton noodles, dim sum, kaya toast, loh mee (braised noodles), cantonese kuey teow, bak kut teh, prawn noodles (or called hokkien mee in Penang), etc. and for more famous things like char kuey teow or assam laksa you could ask them to reduce the spice level :)
Side note: there's a lot of nyonya food that is not spicy like bangkuang salad, pai tee, pongteh chicken, nyonya dumplings that are really good too!
    Enjoy your stay in Penang!

Here's a tip when it comes to eating Malaysian cuisine that comes with rice: Always combine the main or side dishes with rice in one spoonful. Otherwise, the flavors on their own will be overpowering. This applies to most asian dishes whether Malay, Chinese, Thai or Indian etc. Imagine eating the inside ingredients of a burger without eating the bun ?

Penang is famous for its Cgar Kueh Tiaw and Asam Laksa. Do try them. Nasi Kandar is also a must try dish. For dessert you must try Cendol pronounced as Chendol.

Why can't you take grab from the airport? It is so cheap as we are an 'opec plus' country. Even singaporeans and thais run over for fuel.
Your mistake when you landed. No simm, no currency.

O come on..there's plenty of food that's NOT Spicy in all these countries. It depends on the kind of dish you choose. I am a Malaysian..i know!!
And please...to all of you new to this country..DO NOT DUMP ON your food the side sauces and spices provided to you with your ordered food. They always give a lot even when all you need is a tiny bit. Taste it first. Add according to taste and comfort.

Not all spicy food, especially in restaurants, can tell the stall if you want a non-spicy menu, they definitely have it
