For those who don't know, the fact that this game has a Yakuza style gameplay is because Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio did this game(the people behind Yakuza series). So yeah, that's why this game is gonna be awesome. Btw, Kenshiro's voice in japanese it's the same as Kiryu from Yakuza series.
All the characters are voiced by the Yakuza cast in Japanese.
Heck the nightclub running minigame looks like it was lifted straight from Yakuza 0.
Yeah Ryu ga Gotoku Studio quickly became my favorite dev. Theyre just killing it, and Project Judge coming next year! Cant wait to see what theyre cooking for the next mainline Yakuza.
And Jagi's is majimas voice actor.

I remember walking into a comic shop and seeing 3 VHS tapes for rent behind the counter. Ghost In the Shell, Vampire Hunter D and Fist of The North Star. I never heard of these cartoons. Didn’t know they were called anime at the time. My Mom rented it for me. Figured it was just some weird cartoon. Watched it, by myself, and I was blown away! The level of violence and nudity in a cartoon! Can they do that? They did do that! I was hooked. Went back and rented the others. Those 3, plus a little feudal Japan fantasy called Ninja Scroll, are my favorite of all time. If you haven’t seen them, do yourself a favor and get them!

Our stories are similar bro. I was 12 yrs old in 92 & rented this & Ninja Scroll. Hence my love (addiction) for anime. Lol I've been waiting for this type of FoTNS game since I was 12 yrs old that I just Have to Have.

Go back to all year and add Yakuza 6 and Shining Resonance Refrain and god knows what else. Sega is totally killing it this year, my god.

I bought the game years ago but finally started playing this weekend. I love this game! It’s janky in areas but overall, it’s a very fun game. Combat is exhilarating and hilarious!
RGG are the masters of what they do.
I remember getting a questionnaire from Sega a couple of years ago asking if they were to produce a new Fist Of The North Star would it be good to take elements from the Yakuza games. I was like "Heck Yeah!" I'm glad to see others who did that questionnaire agreed also and they listened to their fans! Good Job Sega!

@@msmith1845 meh, that's not a big deal, nothing game breaking and all the story qtes worked for me day 1 I bought the game...ill admit, some of it was kinda inexcusable (darts, excite qte, sound glitches) but I'm tired of people arguing "get it emulated", when emulation only works with great computers..and emulations are still buggy even at optimal settings..sega is doing right in my books..

I decided to buy this game when I knew they decided to make an alternate story, it was the thing that I loved about the first Ken's Rage. This is an excellent way to make the story fresh for those who know the original FOTNS like the back of their hands and let them meet its iconic characters at the same time.
I’m 37 and this was the anime that got me started. I remember renting this from Errol’s video store. It’s been love ever since.
I Miss old anime,today's modern characters look like they shop at hot topic and belong in some stupid boy band. I'm getting this.
We're just old, back in the day all the cool dudes wore the gear from old anime. Tastes sucks these days.

If you want modern anime that are similar to old style anime then try watching JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and DevilMan Crybaby. They're really good.

It's always great to hear others talk about early anime experiences before the internet. We had something Similar in dallas called Planet Anime, they had a back room where people could watch some of the newest fansubs on VHS. That was where I first saw stuff like M.D. Geist and kenshin. Good times

I love the character designs! They've influenced games from Streets of Rage to the latter day Castlevania games.
It feels like a tribute to 80s saturday morning action cartoons, its alot of fun and doesnt take itself too seriously, highly recommended

Fist of the north stars japanese name is Hokuto no Ken. The name of the studio who made this is Ryu ga Gotoku, which means "Like a dragon". They named this game hokuto ga gotoku, which means Like a North Star or Like a big dipper. I thought that was cool for them to combine both the name of the company and the name of the Manga. Ryu ga gotoku is also what the yakuza series is known as in japan. "Yakuza" is just what they decided to call the game here in the west.

Just started playing yakuza 0 and it is my first yakuza game. I am just angry at myself that i havent started this series earlier. Wanna play yakuza 1-7 after this and then judgment and then gonna play this one for sure. These devs are putting so much heart to it and it is rare these days. I was longing for a good single player game. Great series for sure!

The first anime i rented and years later bought was Fist of the north star. The movie started my anime OBSESSION.
Great review of Fist of the North Star Johnny looks like a very interesting adaptation that was done right!
I'm 47 as well and saw it on vhs when I was a teen and this movie blew my mind. I played the demo and it brought back some of that same feeling.

Too bad the first hours are pretty painful because you do not have in freedom in gameplay. Fortunately the second part is great :)
BobArmstrong you're right the prologue and until you beat devil rebirth quite painful. I'm playing it right now just completed clinic rhythm minigame and i'm getting ready for the cursed village, such a great game.

Huge FOTNS fan but honestly I just haven’t gotten into any of their games. Wasn’t into the whole dynasty warrior style, and was hesitant about this one. But after watching your review, this looks like a must buy for me! Definitely on my list to buy!

As someone whos a huge fan of Fist of the North Star and the Yakuza games, I am so glad Sega got the license to develop a game under Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios. Its honestly one of my favorite games on the PS4 and have played though the entire game several times. I really hope that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios will develop a sequel to it or perhaps take another big IP and make it in the style of a Yakuza game as they are such amazing games.
I knew that this game was coming out. However, I was totally wrong on what this one was going to offer. Now I am really pumped to check this one out.
DBZ gets so much credit rightfully for how its promoted anime; I think FOTNS is so unsung for how much it opened eyes to what anime is. I saw it way too young, it blew my mind and I've been hooked ever since

Just honed in on Le Poing De L'Etoile Du Nord as it was on sale for, brace yourselves, eight bucks! It slowly grew on me, even though I had a helluva time with the giant early on (I didn't realize there was a ladder to climb in order to pummel him topside). Yeah, the game rules far beyond expecation. I suggest listening to Pantera's Power Metal whilst playing it...🤩 The story is compelling to the point where I now want to seek out the original manga which came out when I was five years old. Your review is great and does this killer game justice!

I have mixed feelings about the game tho. I'm a huge fan of the anime and manga. I really like the Yakuza games too. But I don't feel like they blend together. Way to crazy and silly for something that always took itself very seriously.
Still super fun, but I think it would have worked better with JoJo.
Heck, even Fist of the Blue Sky. It's about chinese mafia after all.

Well they've altered the story to be more comedic and yakuza like so it doesn't seem to take itself as seriously on this. Then again that might be because the english translations only fit the english dub so it's more of the english interpretation. Anyway it works very well. well the fighting I mean. As well as everything else. Just excuse the minigames if you think they're a little silly.
I have watched the original Fist of the North Star anime and remember when I first heard about this game, I thought it would likely not be good as so many licensed games range between mediocre and just plain awful. I just couldn't see how a game based on this material would be good. Your review of the game completely changed my mind and I'm going to pick this up now. You mentioned how some people think the graphics aren't good, I have to agree with you. I think they look great, the game looks like an old school anime made 3D. Can't wait to play this.

Hokuto!! ken's Rage was awesome.
I got this game and Astro Bot Rescue Mission at launch and was actually going to just keep Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise sealed for my collection but after watching this review I think I'll crack it open and give it a couple of playthroughs. As for Astro Bot for the PSVR I highly recommend it.

Takaya Kuroda-san's version of "Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru" is amazing, i love how Kuroda-san says the iconic line, it's so good, i recently picked this up and i'm loving it :)
Johnny you should watch the original anime, It's a lot of episodes but I know you'd love it.
I grew up in Italy and we used to watch it on telly in the 80's . Everyday after school at lunch time we'd tune in and watch half hour of it with my mum in the background shouting at me not to watch it cos too violent 😂. She actually loved watching it with me and my mates . 3 series. I got the whole lot but dubbed in Italian.
There are some episodes in English but not many. Haven't played the game yet but like u said... Playing fist of the north star or spiderman is a dream come tru for big kids my generation . Great review m8! Cheers. 😁

I wanted this game so bad, I imported the Japanese copy back in March because they hadn’t announced a North American release at that time! I’m a huge Yakuza and Fist of the North Star fan, so this is an easy choice for me. Glad they brought it over. Great review!
At this point, I will buy anything the Yakuza team puts out and to have an enthusiastic review such as this add to my optimism for this game is really making the wait that much more unbearable. I preordered it too. I never preorder.

In the japanese version there was launch dlc for ai wo torimodose and tough boy which I asked if they'd release them but they haven't replied.

Watched some of the anime just before getting this game.. Best decision ever as you realise the devs really made proper use of the source material. Ppl are legit sleeping on this game. Definition of a hidden gem

I love the fact that this game is getting the love it deserves! If you never seem the anima series you should. It is freakin awesome! Ken is the main character of the story but there are so many great heroes in the Manga too! Wish you could play them as well.

Friend at last a good criticism of the game, the others are fine but honestly they look for defects to the game until below the stones, I do not know why people are so complicated with the game is fucking fun.

Unseen Phantom - Unless you plan on buying digitally, it may be difficult to find new and that’s if you want a new copy. I recently purchased a copy from GameStop and was surprised that they still had a couple of new copies, launch copies at that, that have the sticker on the cover indicating there are decals and bonus DLC inside.
Just picked this up for £4.49 on sale, seems like it’ll be good value for money.
