I live near a bowling alley as a kid that have one of the original arcade cabinets in the bar I used to play it all the time eventually a collector found it and bought it that was a sad day
Virtua Fighter has always been for the most hardcore fighting game fans. People who value the gameplay over anything else. No screen-filling hitsparks, no meters, no super moves(that games like Mortal Kombat and Tekken let you do with ONE INPUT), none of that. It doesn't try to be a jack of all trades. It knows what it's good at and focuses on that instead of watering itself down for the sake of casual players, who, aside from Mortal Kombat because "omg all the blood", will never care about fighting games anyway.
Those ‘one button super moves’ in Mortal Kombat and Tekken you speak of (I’m gonna assume you’re referring to their most recent iterations): Supers in MK11 can only be used once per an entire match once they hit. So there’s a lot of resource management to consider as far as if/when you cash in with them. Tekken only introduced supers and other mechanics traditionally associated with 2D fighting games in Tekken 7, ironically because even the wider competitive FGC was turned off by how hard it was to keep up with Tekken Tag 2/Tekken 6. All supers are guaranteed to lose you the round if they don’t hit (except Hwoarang’s since it’s stance specific). There’s rhyme and reason behind the general design of most fighting game mechanics.
VF has a great chance to comeback. I honestly can't believe how good this game looks and the only reason it doesn't completely blow me away is because I've sorta been spoiled by ps5 graphics already and now it could look better but SHIT this is a sexy game
No way to invite friends to your lobbies. No way for friends to search for your created lobbies outside of refreshing a public list over and over again….. seems like a huge oversight to an otherwise outstanding game.
Iam so glad they finally released this game on ps4, for the life of me i cant understand why it was released with so little to do in singleplayer, still an awesome game all round, time for vf6!
I appreciate the honesty in this review I had Final Showdown and could never get over how bad some of the animations looked and most my friends acted like I was crazy, playing Ultimate with better graphics makes it undeniable.
I don’t like the Tekken style explosion on landing a punch or kick,VF 5 is better without that addition!Still VF5 is still the best 3D fighter ever by a distance imo
@@Madyetmellow that's rough, I read articles of how hard it is to find but it's so weird I live in china at the moment and here consoles are overstocked, PC market is much larger.
About the sound, I've played Virtua Fighter 1 and 2 on PC and those sound effects are directly taken from the first games. I've played it for hours, on keyboard :). Those were crazy times. I really like this version, but it's hard to get used to lack of normal jumping as in first two games (the only ones on PC). Now with PS4 i can return to the franchise.
Standing on the board walk in Daytona beach in like 1994 playing virtua fighter, we were sure that was the peak of video games. It was so incredible. I didn’t even know this came out cause I wasn’t using my ps4 while looking for the PS5. Now I’m plugging in my custom joystick and downloading this game. Now.
This reminds me of my childhood I had the Genesis while I was waiting to get a PlayStation, when I finally got one though my dad got me Ehrgeiz instead of Tekken lol good times.
Ok… I’m a real big VF fan and I have all of them.. but this version is much different than the regular VF5. Seems like they really changed moves and took stuff out. Also, seems like a lot of stuff does not connect anymore..I used to be good.. and now I am terrible lmao.
Yeah Sega really does need to be getting moving on with VF6 now waites far too long plus it needs to be on multi consoles not just PlayStation. Overall waiting all waiting 12 years isn't too bad still waiting on Fighters Megamix 2 😂😂
Yes once we all get a PS5 sega needs to give us a better VF6 with more fighters and most importantly more modes survival and story with story we get an opening for a fighter and once we beat the last boss an ending that one mode has been missing for so long that it’s time to have it even dead or alive has it and maybe give us a create a fighter always like going back to VF1 style since that came out back when I was 13 no more backstory from the manual let us read on screen the plot of the game and the fighter we pick then their ending and we would also like DLC fighters and stages
Anything Sega involved to fighting gaming is always perfection. VF5US is the best beat -em-up available. Fair amount well made characters, arcade feel and nice playability. DOA can go shame in the corner with their stupid roster and money grab policy.
I'm glad Virtua Fighter got another shot at life even if its just a more polished and visual upgrade of VF5. My main gripe is that it feels very lacking in extra content and it would have been nice to have some of the voice acting to be re-recorded for the english speaking characters to sound less akward. Still its only early days of Ultimate Showdowns release so maybe it will get some more new content and DLC down the line which would be pretty cool. I hope Sega will bring back Fighting Vipers as that game is an absolute gem and deserves more attention.
I started playing this game today. It looks sharp indeed. I was very excited to play. However, the music is a bit outdated to my opinion and the game lacks the depth some 3d fighters have these days. I hope they will add more content down the line. Not all negative abt the game but right now it did not bring me the exitement I had hoped for (yet).
This review is making a mistake, match stability has nothing to do with servers, All DELAY BASED fighting games are peer to peer if you want better connections you need more players close to you.
It's free with ps plus, it's a classic. I remember playing virtua fighter way before all the other fighting games, tekken, mortal kombat etc. It bring back the memories when I was a very little kid asking my mom for coins so I could play this and street fighter in the arcade game shop. 🥰
I hope VF becomes SEGA’s Street Fighter in the sense that it will be used as a crossover for other SEGA franchises and I hope to see Yakuza, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi and others that would make sense to be there as fighters.
@@michaelromeo9567 i know about that, I’m talking about a CANONICAL fighting game where they all exist In Street Fighter we have: Saturday Night Slam Masters, Final Fight, Strider, Captain Commando and Rival Schools Virtua Fighter could canonize Yakuza, Crazy Taxi and Shenmue as an example 👌
@@n1hondude Actually Street fighter alwats stuck to its own lore. Final Fight Rival schools are from the same lore. You'll never be able to play strider or Captain command. Capcom never messed up its main series with this new trend of wtf crossovers. And I kind of like that since there is specific crossover franchises from the same publisher 😊 Plus Virtua ighter is a more serious game with actual fighting styles. All characters have their own martial art. Big companies can afford to not mess up with their own main series .
@@michaelromeo9567 Sakura made a cameo appearance in Rival Schools but now Rival School characters have made appearances in Karin’s beach stage in SFV. Karin made a first appearance in SF03 (Alpha 3) after she debuted in a manga) . Zeku, a SFV character, is Guy’s master and Guy is from Final Fight. Zeku in SFV is shown to have created and become the first “Strider”. Crimson Viper is said to be wearing a prototype of Captain Commando’s gear, and Captain Commando is set in the future of Metro City, which is where the Final Fight characters. Cody who is from Final Fight is now the mayor of Metro City as of SFV, replacing Mike Haggar after Cody did some time in jail. Mike Haggar before becoming the mayor he was a wrestler as seen in Saturday Night Slam Masters. 👌 That’s what I’m suggesting VF should do, canonize other SEGA franchises, the ones that make sense like Yakuza, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue and not furries like Sonic for example.
@@n1hondudeI didn't know about The futuereof Metro City. Read me again , I said Street fighter has its own lore they share with other games. But you can not mix it with whatever you want . No. You can't with Cadillac or dinausors or Knight of the rounds etc.. (Also even this timeline with captain commando make this impossible. That why you can only have costumes.) Plus KIRYU even if he is popular isn't a representative of a specific martial art. And THIS is VF tradition VF DNA. No fire balls no supers no laser devil wings or whaterver just martial arts. Ask SEGA to revive their other franchise like Last bronx and Goro majima would fit perfectly. Or Kiryu in Fighter megamix 2 or a SEGA all Star new game. Leave VF Alone. please.. 🙏
The voices (I think) sounded worse in the PS3 version and even worse-ier when the four poster kids appeared on Dead or Alive 5... As for the customization, the last rerelease had twice the amount of content. I don't really care for it that much but each character also had six premade costume, one of which was a swimsuit for both the girls and the guys instead of just having three costumes for each character. Overall I'm really happy Virtua Fighter is back, even if not in an actual "Ultimate" state.
I don't know what's more annoying: The begging for subsciptions, the fact that it tells you what you have to do in order to support the channel, or the fact that the mouse always sounds like it's from 1998.
This is the first VF game I played since VF3tb on dreamcast ( mine still works ) and Arcade of VF3. Character motion looks speeded up/a little off. Ignoring the graphics upgrades, the stages seem all flat vs in VF3. But hey for free on psplus this month I'll still be playing it now and then.
Agreed. This is a respectable remaster. The mechanics need improved with the spacing. Still I'm enjoying the game. I do want a new VF6 with more moves, characters and mechanics
I love the game but after years of not playing it I’m having a learning curve and yeah it is my choice of character. I’m learning Aoi and el blaze it’s just hard to discipline yourself to a character especially Aoi and blaze they require immense study.
I can't tell if I'm losing me mind. It won''t let me play local vs. with 2 wired arcade pads. I can't begin to comprehend why it won't let me. How am I supposed to play with my roommates? WTF?
Found my other controller. The system needs two wireless controllers to start local vs mode. You may then switch controllers and now you can play with arcade pads. Its just a weird oversight.
You are as dumb as a rock. Virtua Fighter doesn't play like Tekken. It is the other way round, since VF was the first 3D fighting game, which Namco copied. Without Virtua Fighter, Tekken would not even exist.

Those ‘one button super moves’ in Mortal Kombat and Tekken you speak of (I’m gonna assume you’re referring to their most recent iterations):
Supers in MK11 can only be used once per an entire match once they hit.
ME AND MY CREW BEEN PLAYING THIS ALL NIGHT! 👊🏾👊🏾💥💥💥💯💯💯

Yes last gen hard been great for fighting games...
@@Rs-pb9qd leading strong into current gen with rollback
@@Rs-pb9qd yes I love fighting games, especially DOA. Too bad doa6 went a weird direction. Still haven't played it, but played the hell outta 5
The animations were very good for 2006. And still are better than those of some recent fighting games like NRS and Snk games.
It would be great if this game was released on PC.
@Lekzie69 Tekken 7 still has 5 to 7K players daily on PC. That is not "dead". Dead is when you only see 1 person play it.
I played it online and I can see why they didn't port it to pc or Xbox; its bad - it feels like first timers made it.
@@dave9020 SOULCALIBUR VI 👍

I don’t like the Tekken style explosion on landing a punch or kick,VF 5 is better without that addition!Still VF5 is still the best 3D fighter ever by a distance imo
Gutted to see this isn’t available on Xbox. Seems I will have to continue playing VF5FS :(
Buy a ps5, if you're a fighting game fan you kind of need to have one. Sony owns EVO now so A LOT of fighting games will be focused on platform.

3:33 Amazing Aoi gameplay! 😂😂
Now.
I used to play this game when I couldn’t afford tekken I’m defo playing this game for nostalgia
Right! I got this on the Xbox 360 in 2010 for like 5 bucks and played the crap outta it.
Cool , a nostalgia trip that i enjoyed for free on psnow but im ready for VF6
The graphics are perfect. We need more games with popping bright colors like this. Current gen games seem to lack this
I'm glad Virtua Fighter got another shot at life even if its just a more polished and visual upgrade of VF5.
Does it have the quest mode where you can unlock customization items like in VF4EVO?
I started playing this game today. It looks sharp indeed. I was very excited to play. However, the music is a bit outdated to my opinion and the game lacks the depth some 3d fighters have these days. I hope they will add more content down the line. Not all negative abt the game but right now it did not bring me the exitement I had hoped for (yet).
will they be adding more characters to the game ?
First. How yall doin? Who uses this move?

This review is making a mistake, match stability has nothing to do with servers, All DELAY BASED fighting games are peer to peer if you want better connections you need more players close to you.
@Dale Macarena omg what have I done, actually expecting reviewers to do their jobs 😱
no just no thats a lame excuse for having bad netcode
Not all delay based games use p2p only. They can use servers aswell. You never played on kaillera servers...?
Wait for Kazuma Kiryu as a DLC character.
Not even he'll be a "skin" for Brad
Nice, in-depth review!
It's free with ps plus, it's a classic. I remember playing virtua fighter way before all the other fighting games, tekken, mortal kombat etc. It bring back the memories when I was a very little kid asking my mom for coins so I could play this and street fighter in the arcade game shop. 🥰
And PlayStation now
More accessible fighters.... tekken!👊🏻🤯
Since it's been given on PS+, no harm in giving it a shot
Pretty thrilled about that. Thought I was reading it wrong when I saw it on the PS Store.
Can't believe I missed on that.
I'm so excited that VF is finally coming to next gen console
I hope VF becomes SEGA’s Street Fighter in the sense that it will be used as a crossover for other SEGA franchises and I hope to see Yakuza, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi and others that would make sense to be there as fighters.
SEGA al star fighters. Or FIGHTER MEgamix 2. (SEGA's smash bros.)😉.
@@michaelromeo9567 i know about that, I’m talking about a CANONICAL fighting game where they all exist
In Street Fighter we have: Saturday Night Slam Masters, Final Fight, Strider, Captain Commando and Rival Schools
Virtua Fighter could canonize Yakuza, Crazy Taxi and Shenmue as an example 👌
@@n1hondude Actually Street fighter alwats stuck to its own lore. Final Fight Rival schools are from the same lore. You'll never be able to play strider or Captain command.
Capcom never messed up its main series with this new trend of wtf crossovers.
And I kind of like that since there is specific crossover franchises from the same publisher 😊
Plus Virtua ighter is a more serious game with actual fighting styles. All characters have their own martial art.
Big companies can afford to not mess up with their own main series .
@@michaelromeo9567 Sakura made a cameo appearance in Rival Schools but now Rival School characters have made appearances in Karin’s beach stage in SFV.
Karin made a first appearance in SF03 (Alpha 3) after she debuted in a manga)
.
That’s what I’m suggesting VF should do, canonize other SEGA franchises, the ones that make sense like Yakuza, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue and not furries like Sonic for example.
That why you can only have costumes.)
Plus KIRYU even if he is popular isn't a representative of a specific martial art.
So you mean Final Showdown has more customs than this?
@@YousefTube unless I'm misremembering things, yeah. I definitely remember more premade outfits for everybody and more hair options
Quest/Kumite Mode please

I don't know what's more annoying:
The begging for subsciptions, the fact that it tells you what you have to do in order to support the channel, or the fact that the mouse always sounds like it's from 1998.
Is this game very good? I heard some negative reviews with some fans despite me being a fan myself.
Hey, Gaming Bolt, how do you pronounce Kage?
It's pronounced "kah-geh", it means shadow in japanese

There's nothing "ultimate" in this, they even removed Quest Mode :// Sega should take a lesson from Netherrealm Studios.

It won''t let me play local vs. with 2 wired arcade pads.
I can't begin to comprehend why it won't let me.

WTF?
Found my other controller.
The system needs two wireless controllers to start local vs mode. You may then switch controllers and now you can play with arcade pads. Its just a weird oversight.
virtua fighter v sounds and looks like street fighter v but plays like tekken
You are as dumb as a rock. Virtua Fighter doesn't play like Tekken. It is the other way round, since VF was the first 3D fighting game, which Namco copied.

Where the hell is Virtua Fighter 4???????? We never got a home console release ever.....
Are u being funny? Or serious can't tell but you know vf4 was definitely on PS2 I think it had 2 versions too
@@gcforreal Sorry I meant arcade perfect conversion. With the power of consoles nowadays, this can easily be achieved. Sega simply doesn't care and just continues to release the same old retro games every generation, while there remains a HUGE arcade catalog that has never seen the light of day on home consoles. System 16 The Arcade Museum lists a TON of them.
I don't know why this is a exclusive it should be released on pc, x1, and switch aswell( switch does need a serious 3d fighter in the levels of tekken, doa, and Soul Calibur).

They screwed up the online rooms. You cannot play with your friends because there's too many people online. There Code Passwords everyone else is using passwords to so it's worse. In the party invite notification for some reason died out over time. Over in the PlayStation 3 and early PlayStation 4 games I could just invite people into my lobby but that's gone now. All I can do now is constantly refresh lobbies until I see my friend's name out of the billions of people who downloaded this game
