This is a really good beginner tutorial. I like the amount of generalization you put in there, like low attacks being generally the slowest, grabs being generally the fastest, counter throws being knowledge based, combo length being about 6-7 hits, etc. That way I can get a rough idea of the gameplay without details getting in the way. I've seen other guides that put too much emphasis on frame data or other more specific stuff too early in what's supposed to be a beginner's guide. This is excellent in comparison.
The best fighting game ever made and it's such a testament to the people that made this that fucking 15 years later it's still the best game and it still looks amazing.
So helpful. The open/closed stance segment really just changed my world. Like, so many times I'm raging because I can't understand how things are whiffing despite thinking I'm already factoring elements such as weightclass. This explains those odd moments where i know everything is perfect but I still drop the combo.
Yo, VF fan here. @rooflemonger actually tought it wrongly. Open/closed stance doesn't necessarily depends if your char's chest is turned towards or away the screen. It's actually relative to both characters' stances. If you and your opponent are facing the same way you both are on open stance, if not, you both are on closed stance.
You can also check out the stance checking when characters are being launched...but VFDC was subject to a massive overhaul years back. There's everything masterfully explained: virtuafighter.com/wiki/positions/
@@biquiba As someone who doesn't play VF but has some combat sport experience his explanation bugged me. Good to know VF follows martial arts convention.

Wow, great video dude ! Iam a Goh & Vanessa player. Im playin VF since the 4th game and never noticed the open and closed stance ! Thank you very much !
Great guide! I'm no expert but I think I should comment on the stance portion. The description of open and closed stance is not quite right. It doesn't matter whether your chest or back is towards the screen. Instead, it's dependent on how the two characters are aligned. To take from VFDC's Wiki: -"Closed Stance refers to the case where each player has the same foot forward." (So both characters have their right foot forward, or both have left foot forward. When you boot up training mode or begin a match, you begin in closed stance). -"Open Stance refers to the case where each player has an opposing foot forward." (So P1 has right foot forward while P2 has left foot forward or vise versa). If this wording is tough to envision, I encourage players to check out VFDC's Wiki and look at the /positions/ section.
I had to check that like three times in the video to understand what he was saying but I checked after reading your comment and it seems the foot positioning makes sense too, guess I have to test it myself, but any case I really love this new VF 5 is about creating an actual online community becuase I remember the OG VF 5 on PS3 came with no online component which was weird and sadly that was the problem with the VF series like, ir really needed the benefit of a larger community.
