So thankful she made these (and many other) videos. Super helpful in understanding this song with drums. Meytal has most of my favorite rock drum songs.
I have seen two covers of this now and both well done. I agree it is not a technically difficult song to play but I used play it myself and to me it is all about feel and Sean has amazing feel able to switch between 4/4 on here and 6/4 on Hollow for example. Whatever Meytal plays normally I have no idea but she played this well and I was even listening out for the rolls around the 3 min mark which some drummers miss out when I have watched bands cover but they were there so I am not complaining. To the armchair drummers some songs are not technically difficult but then it is all about groove and feel. Kashmir by Led Zep was one of Bonham's easier songs to play but listen to it and it still sounds great because he had great feel and played slightly behind the beat. I know there is that crazy bit towards the end when he does change the beat slightly and throws in some great hi-hat and bass drum fills but the first part of the song is simple one bass drum and one snare beat in 4/4 time but no one says that is not technical because that is not what is required for the song. At the end of the day the drummer is accompanying the other musicians and that is what Sean Kinney does so brilliantly so I think you have to be a drummer to appreciate how underrated he is. Listen to the independence before the 16th notes on the hi-hat and listen to the music it fits perfectly and this is what Sean Kinney does all the time. Listen to Hollow where it sounds to the non drummer he is just crashing cymbals but he is not he is actually being very clever and using them to accent the 6/4 which is just genius and works so well in the song.
It is not the sort of song I would expect a drummer to fumble over as not exactly Good Times Bad Times by Bonham but it does have a lovely feel. I really like Sean Kinney but as per my essay above she plays it well. It does annoy when people put covers up and do not play it as it should be played. I like a cover to sound like a cover. By all means when you are with your band do your own thing but if playing along to a song play the song. Some songs are rarely done perfectly like the aforementioned Good Times Bad Times not even the great Jojo who covers it gets the feet right. I have high standards and expect a lot from drummers but this cover meets my expectations. There are some good drummers on UA-cam and if I think a song is played well I will say but if I think the song is inaccurate I may also say. It is at this point that some people get fiery in their comments but if you are going to cover Dazed and Confused Mike Portnoy then you have to play the crossover triplet. These are the rules of drumming :)
Alice in Chains is one my top 3 favorite bands of all time. Dirt is probably my favorite album to come out of the Seattle music scene. One of the things I really like about Meytal is how she smiles while she is playing.
