I'm deaf as well and I can confirm that Spain has different signs. I do also speak Spanish (but not Spanish sign language). On the plane coming back from Spain last summer I was sat next to another deaf guy who only knew Spanish sign language but he was going to England to meet his friend and wanted to learn some BSL, so I taught him some on the plane. I couldn't understand his signing so we had to communicate by writing in Spanish on our phones, but I've never felt so clever in my life. I'm going to be telling everyone this story for the rest of my life because it will never happen again.
@@dizzy_ddigital if they do continue to speak without hearing themselves the way they originally learnt to pronounce things will still influence the way they say things when they can’t hear themselves, even if it starts to sound different surely they would retain some memory of pronunciation. the fact that the original commenter made specific reference to it being a uk accent made it seem as if being deaf would change the country their accent was from

Since she cant hear her voice anymore she has lost how she originally speaks to a degree by her not being able to pronounce words perfectly but its not like she would switch to an american accent or something lol.
she wasnt originally deaf, like they said. So she grows up speaking with the same accent as everyone around her, just like you, and then she goes deaf one day, which has nothing to do with your accent, so it doesnt change. Not being able to hear your own voice does make it progressively more difficult to properly pronounce words, however.
Sign language should ABSOLUTELY be put in schools. I think it would be a huge benefit, not only for people with hearing impairments but just also in general when it comes to communicating. Especially when you consider how much we use body language and our hands when we talk in English, sign would be an even more effective extension of that. I'd love to see it implemented into schools.

I'm a student nurse and I'm currently learning BSL. My course offers an introduction course online that we can do if we want. I think it's important that as future nurses we learn BSL even just finger spelling and a few other helpful words/phrases as we will come across deaf people at work or just in everyday life and we will be able to support them more. I think it should be taught in schools because most likely people will use it more that a language like French and being able to communicate with deaf people will provide more collaboration between deaf and hearing. I also find it interesting that im the same Evie I am learning and picking up BSL really quickly and compared to when I learnt German in school when even after 5 years I struggled to do the basics, it's strange how I'm finding it easier to learn. But it's probably due to me actually wanting to learn it 🤣

What a beautiful, contagious smile :) For the Americans interested in learning American Sign Language, a great great resource to start with is Lifeprint/ASL University (better known on UA-cam as Bill Vicars) - learning ASL is one of the best things I ever did, and I started learning with Lifeprint. I practiced some simple vocabulary and my alphabet daily, and slowly picked up more as I went along. BUT! Don't make it your only resource, Lifeprint is just a springboard into everything! There is so, so much more to signed languages than just moving your hands - it involves your whole body and your facial expressions, and that's way easier to learn in person or via a cyber tutor. I started with two sentences - basically "I'm learning sign language," and "Sorry, can you sign that again, slowly?" and before I knew it, I was able to make small talk. If you live in a city or close to a city, your access to the d/Deaf community is probably much larger than you think it is, so don't be afraid to seek out some Deaf Coffee Nights or similar get-togethers to practice! Bridging the language gap opens your whole world to a brand new community, it is never not worth it.

Chloe has a very nice laugh, and it is full of good vibrations. I hope it will always be something that she does often. I also hope that this is not insensitive for me to say in any way. I can't even imagine what it would be like not to be able to hear this one sound in particular. It is probably the most beautiful and natural a sound that any human being can make, and it says so much without really saying anything at all.

It's interesting to see the differences between American Sign Language and British Sign Language. There's so many similarities due to the similar lineage, but the differing signs still make sense, like you can understand based on context and the actual movement of the sign. I love it :)
See that’s one thing I liked about my primary school, not only did they teach us wiradjuri (a aboriginal language) but also sign language I learnt many words in sign language. It was also helpful as when we had assembly for the acknowledgment of country we signed it so that people who were deaf could still know what we were saying which made then very happy. 😊😊😊

I love your friendship! True friends with a great understanding of each other. My dad is profoundly deaf since birth, but he never learnt sign language. He is so amazing at lip reading and can even tell what accent someone has, it blows my mind!! I would love to learn bsl myself.

I totally understand about learning ASL through a deaf teacher and I had to retake 102 class in college and I had a hearing teacher. I asked her how do you sign this word? She said that she can't show me because if she did then she had to help all her other students. That just wasn't what I expected with a hearing teacher for ASL. Ever since then I had a deaf teacher for the remaining classes. My 201-202 classes I asked my teacher if she can help me with some ASL and she was amazing and did help answering all my questions that I had. I also met up at a group with other people whose learning and I met a deaf lady and we are still friends to this day. Whenever I see deaf or hard of hearing people using sign language I walk up and introduce myself to them. Love the community so much.

I would love if they thought sign language in schools but the problem with that is there are so many different types of sign so someone might think they know what they’re saying in asl but try to communicate with someone who signs in bel or something.
also, if youre from america like me then Bill Vicars is an amazing person and wonderful teacher right here on youtube! i followed him a while ago because i’ve been meaning to learn ASL. but after watching these two lovely ladies, i went and watched his ASL alphabet video and got started on his ASL lesson 1 video! hes super funny and has been extremely helpful. i went from hardly knowing anything to now being able to fingerspell in just a couple hours! (p.s. as someone who used to work food service, sign language is so helpful to learn even just a few signs plus the alphabet and some numbers. it can make someone who uses sign language feel so happy just to see people trying! and, if you become fluent, a lot of customer service oriented places in the US will pay extra if youre bilingual 👀 so theres really no reason not to learn!) have fun, y’all! 🦖⭐️✨
Hey guys! We actually have sign language courses at our university, but I never got in. I think they're not for my study subject. Maybe I can do some at community college. But learning the alphabet first is probably a good way, right? It's not that appreciative of the language I feel like, but it's still useful if a person can understand keywords like "map" or "toilet" or "lost" or "milk coffee" or something like that.
I started learning ASL on TikTok because I thought it was interesting, and then I learned the rest that I know from a deaf friend. I haven't taken an official class YET, but I plan to! TikTok is definitely not a place to "learn" ASL, but I found that watching deaf people on social media helped me see multiple people sign, and get used to those different accents lol. My deaf friend is patient with me, as a hearing person who is learning. But I can't wait to take a course someday for that formal and full education!
I'm a bit late to watching the video sorry. This has given me alot of inspiration and I've recently started learning sign language. I only know how to sign the alphabet and do some simple greetings but it's a start
I've been told I have a "southern" accent when signing... which was interesting. Never noticed. 🤣 I miss the deaf/HoH friends I made in university. I feel like I'm out of practice now. I may take a few classes in the meantime to keep it up 🤔 We don't have many meetups in my area that I'm aware of.
I always try to learn sign language it's nice for the deaf people around you be more understanding I had a deaf friend taught me some .some I did learn off your video you did with music.

Love this video. My school had a time where people could choose to learn sign language but only a few people got into that class. They don’t teach sign language anymore so when i go college, I’m hoping to learn more and improve. I currently use youtube to learn sign language
I know here in Australia they have different dialects between the southern and northern deaf communities So people will sign things differently, like the sign for car & coffee for example.
i agree i think sign language should be more mandatory then taking another language class, i would love to learn sign but everytime i tried to learn the abc i can only remember maybe 5 out of the rest so i eventually gave up due to memory
i think there should be a universal sign language, would be so cool because you could communicate with everyone AND it doesnt require speech. So you could even if you dont speak it learn some signs to get around. i was shocked when i found out that there are soo many different sign languages.

I have seriously considered learning sign language on multiple different occasions and I should just do it! I think a part of me is scared to, only because I am nervous about the probability of losing my hearing. I have ear conditions that have already diminished my hearing, and certain symptoms do make it harder to hear, and certain environments also do the same. I've gotten by for 34 years on this earth with the hearing I have, and I'm just scared for when the rest goes.
I've always wanted to learn BSL, and i know the alphabet and a few basic signs, but one time i tried signing to a song (probably did it wrong cause i was using the dictionary lol) and i filmed it and in doing so realised my signs looked so lazy. I think it's to do with the fact that i'm autistic, and its difficult to explain but my own inner perception of my movements is often bigger than they are in reality. This is the same reason i eventually gave up dancing. I feel things bigger in my own head than they really are, so while i'm signing i feel like i'm signing normally, but from the outside perspective, it looks like the equivalent of mumbling in sign language. Theres also the difficulty with facial expressions being important in sign, but of course being autistic i struggle with that a lot, along with eye contact. I think if i were to ever meet a D/deaf person we'd have to communicate through notes and typing (which i'm not exactly adverse to since I much prefer writing to speaking anyway, but at the same time i understand how that might feel less personal to people). I guess being autistic is just an unfortunate barrier we'd have to work through if i ever met a D/deaf person.
I know a little bit of Australian sign language. I have learnt how to sign some things. Because when I’m in a sensory overload, I will sign help please or whatever I need. Because I find it hard to communicate when I’m having a sensory overload by voice.
My friend is deaf, but he never learned sign language. He lip reads instead. But he does know the alphabet in sign for complicated words. It can be funny when he says a word he's never heard spoken, like liquorice. (Lick - o - rice). Bless
Interesting to get an inside view from you and your friend Chloe on sign language! I wonder if sign language is less diversified than spoken/written languages over the world, and if that makes it easier for a deaf person to communicate in different countries. Or do you need to learn another sign language, when you go abroad? The grammar rules of different written languages may perhaps also dictate the sequence of verbs, nouns and adjectives.
Because of the history of segregation in America, there is something called BASL, Black American Sign Language. In this racist system, Black children were educated apart from white children and of course they developed their own culture and dialect that is so vibrant and beautiful! And there are so many regional “accents” as you said. I live in a city on the border of two states and many of my ASL teacher colleagues learned in Kentucky but our deaf colleagues are local from Ohio. I’m always so surprised at similar signs that ASL has with BSL!
In the Swedish school we actually did learn some sign language in like 2nd grade and I thought it was actually really fun, I know my name (the letters) and like coffee which is really similar to the way she signed Google and I do know the sign for a city but I only know that one because my best friends brother is autistic and can't speak so he sometimes uses a bit of sign, but basically it's you put your point fingers and put them on each side of the neck 👉🏼*neck*👈🏼 and then twist as if it is screws in your neck
I would love to lean sign!! I have Congenital radioulnar synostosis so I can't turn my hand's palms up so when I tried learning when I was younger it was really difficult, but I would love to modify it
You both have a lovely connection/friendship. I couldn't agree more with your statements. Yes, British Sign Language should be taught in schools. That would be more useful than learning French or Spanish. Also, definitely learn from a qualified D/deaf tutor. I learnt Level 2 from an English speaking tutor. I'm now learning Level 3 from a Deaf tutor and I'm struggling to keep up. But, I'll keep going. It's a beautiful language to learn. At what age did you learn BSL?
Over here in America we use the ASL sign language but the other countries have different types of sign language and I don't know if they can all be understood
For my family all my babies used asl (American sign language) as a first language. It developed in to our own language eventually. It all began with me to communicate with my nephew 🥰. I do wish for a universal sign language... Wouldn't be amazing to communicate with all peoples with one language across the world? 💕

Hey guys! We actually have sign language courses at our university, but I never got in. I think they're not for my study subject. Maybe I can do some at community college. But learning the alphabet first is probably a good way, right? It's not that appreciative of the language I feel like, but it's still useful if a person can understand keywords like "map" or "toilet" or "lost" or "milk coffee" or something like that.
I started learning ASL on TikTok because I thought it was interesting, and then I learned the rest that I know from a deaf friend. I haven't taken an official class YET, but I plan to! TikTok is definitely not a place to "learn" ASL, but I found that watching deaf people on social media helped me see multiple people sign, and get used to those different accents lol. My deaf friend is patient with me, as a hearing person who is learning. But I can't wait to take a course someday for that formal and full education!
I'm a bit late to watching the video sorry. This has given me alot of inspiration and I've recently started learning sign language. I only know how to sign the alphabet and do some simple greetings but it's a start

I miss the deaf/HoH friends I made in university. I feel like I'm out of practice now. I may take a few classes in the meantime to keep it up 🤔 We don't have many meetups in my area that I'm aware of.

I always try to learn sign language it's nice for the deaf people around you be more understanding I had a deaf friend taught me some .some I did learn off your video you did with music.
Hi Evie I just wanted to say that I love your videos. I have a friend that's got a speaking disorder and uses sign language to communicate I've been learning sign language for 7 nearly 8 years now it's the best thing I've ever learnt .
When I used to nanny full time, I did teach my charges from early toddler age basic sign language as I helped teach them spanish and english.
And I've learnt two signs from this - 'easy' and 'yes'!!!

Love this video. My school had a time where people could choose to learn sign language but only a few people got into that class. They don’t teach sign language anymore so when i go college, I’m hoping to learn more and improve. I currently use youtube to learn sign language
I know here in Australia they have different dialects between the southern and northern deaf communities So people will sign things differently, like the sign for car & coffee for example.
i agree i think sign language should be more mandatory then taking another language class, i would love to learn sign but everytime i tried to learn the abc i can only remember maybe 5 out of the rest so i eventually gave up due to memory

i think there should be a universal sign language, would be so cool because you could communicate with everyone AND it doesnt require speech. So you could even if you dont speak it learn some signs to get around. i was shocked when i found out that there are soo many different sign languages.

I have seriously considered learning sign language on multiple different occasions and I should just do it! I think a part of me is scared to, only because I am nervous about the probability of losing my hearing. I have ear conditions that have already diminished my hearing, and certain symptoms do make it harder to hear, and certain environments also do the same. I've gotten by for 34 years on this earth with the hearing I have, and I'm just scared for when the rest goes.

I really loved the Q and A , It gave me a different perspective on things.
I've always wanted to learn BSL, and i know the alphabet and a few basic signs, but one time i tried signing to a song (probably did it wrong cause i was using the dictionary lol) and i filmed it and in doing so realised my signs looked so lazy. I think it's to do with the fact that i'm autistic, and its difficult to explain but my own inner perception of my movements is often bigger than they are in reality. This is the same reason i eventually gave up dancing. I feel things bigger in my own head than they really are, so while i'm signing i feel like i'm signing normally, but from the outside perspective, it looks like the equivalent of mumbling in sign language. Theres also the difficulty with facial expressions being important in sign, but of course being autistic i struggle with that a lot, along with eye contact. I think if i were to ever meet a D/deaf person we'd have to communicate through notes and typing (which i'm not exactly adverse to since I much prefer writing to speaking anyway, but at the same time i understand how that might feel less personal to people). I guess being autistic is just an unfortunate barrier we'd have to work through if i ever met a D/deaf person.
I know a little bit of Australian sign language. I have learnt how to sign some things. Because when I’m in a sensory overload, I will sign help please or whatever I need. Because I find it hard to communicate when I’m having a sensory overload by voice.
My friend is deaf, but he never learned sign language. He lip reads instead. But he does know the alphabet in sign for complicated words. It can be funny when he says a word he's never heard spoken, like liquorice. (Lick - o - rice). Bless
Interesting to get an inside view from you and your friend Chloe on sign language! I wonder if sign language is less diversified than spoken/written languages over the world, and if that makes it easier for a deaf person to communicate in different countries. Or do you need to learn another sign language, when you go abroad? The grammar rules of different written languages may perhaps also dictate the sequence of verbs, nouns and adjectives.
I swear BSL and ASL are so so different. BSL makes much more sense to me, but I live in Canada, so we use ASL here.
Because of the history of segregation in America, there is something called BASL, Black American Sign Language. In this racist system, Black children were educated apart from white children and of course they developed their own culture and dialect that is so vibrant and beautiful! And there are so many regional “accents” as you said. I live in a city on the border of two states and many of my ASL teacher colleagues learned in Kentucky but our deaf colleagues are local from Ohio. I’m always so surprised at similar signs that ASL has with BSL!

In the Swedish school we actually did learn some sign language in like 2nd grade and I thought it was actually really fun, I know my name (the letters) and like coffee which is really similar to the way she signed Google and I do know the sign for a city but I only know that one because my best friends brother is autistic and can't speak so he sometimes uses a bit of sign, but basically it's you put your point fingers and put them on each side of the neck 👉🏼*neck*👈🏼 and then twist as if it is screws in your neck
I would love to lean sign!! I have Congenital radioulnar synostosis so I can't turn my hand's palms up so when I tried learning when I was younger it was really difficult, but I would love to modify it

You both have a lovely connection/friendship. I couldn't agree more with your statements. Yes, British Sign Language should be taught in schools. That would be more useful than learning French or Spanish. Also, definitely learn from a qualified D/deaf tutor. I learnt Level 2 from an English speaking tutor. I'm now learning Level 3 from a Deaf tutor and I'm struggling to keep up. But, I'll keep going. It's a beautiful language to learn. At what age did you learn BSL?
Over here in America we use the ASL sign language but the other countries have different types of sign language and I don't know if they can all be understood

Sign language was taught in my high school in America, but I took Spanish. I wish I took sign language. I’ve been trying to learn online a bit.
For my family all my babies used asl (American sign language) as a first language. It developed in to our own language eventually. It all began with me to communicate with my nephew 🥰.
I do wish for a universal sign language... Wouldn't be amazing to communicate with all peoples with one language across the world? 💕

I guess there are different dialects and variations in sign like different languages. Here we use ASL, but I'm sure it's different there. Im not fluent by any means, but I know a lot of basics to be able to communicate. I started learning in school when one of my classmates was deaf. If I don't know a sign ill say spell it out. All my kids know some ASL
It'd be cool if Chloe did a UA-cam and teaches people sign language. I'd like to learn but no idea where to start.
