The cool thing about REN is that he does what he wants. He’s not bound to any style or sound. He has also put in the work instrumentally and vocally to be able to give us what’s in his head at that moment. Always a great reaction!!

I love and completely agree with what you say about Ren's relationship to the idea of "celebrity." For me he's very much a working class guy, a genius at music, who knows how to use modern tools to get his songs out there, but still one of us, a guy who gets his feet dirty as he walks through the mud like we all do. Celebrities often feel like their feet never touch the ground.

The past's idea of the future, blended with the futures idea of the past.... That my friend, is a fucking exceptional description I may steal for future conversations about music, and Ren in particular 🙌🏻👏🏻 🇬🇧🔊

"What I see with Ren is a rebuffing of tradition that is welcome, that is longed for, and a new way of doing things." Love that. I think some of it may come with his love for counterculture.

I tell people all the time that what I love MOST about Ren (besides his ability to speak to my soul through music) is his genuine-ness. He's the same through his music, interviews, social posts, and live interactions on twitch/YT etc. His friends rave about it too, which makes it even better, that those around him see him the same way we do. It's refreshing in today's society!

    Love your reactions and insights.
I think Ren's illness and struggles have allowed him to stay grounded and have that "innocence" that you spoke about. He has a drive and passion that isn't clouded or directed by wealth or industry bigwigs. It's him just loving music, whether it's his or other artists, and making the most of his time and energy that he has to create and share what he loves.

Not bound to any Genre. He just loves music. Playing, producing, making and listening to it. He is also able to take us in with him with his performances. It’s just pure genius. Great reaction. 😘😘😘

As a mature (okay old) person the one thing I've always enjoy about Ren's music is the way he does a lot of covering of the some of the greats of the past. I'm not a big rap fan but what Ren does is always easy to enjoy and understand, and in my opinion has a lot more meaning than most of todays rap.

As usual excellent review. Still can't believe that no Ren or Chinchilla, at all is played on British radio. I assume that all the spots are paid for by promoters, might explain the amount of auto-tune!
I am surprised that so far there has been no reaction to Chinchilla only songs: Little girl gone, Cut you off, Trigger, Terms & conditions, Lock down get down or Ren & Sam Blind eyed MC sessions.

Also no nominations in the Brit awards either, and no interview with Opera. Maybe it’s because he raps about violence and depression.

When his album sick boi was released he got radio play on BBC radio 1 amongst others. Not sure if he sent his earlier material to BBC introducing, I'm assuming he did and it got lost in the thousands of song applications they get.

I look forward to your Ren analyses because nobody else views and articulates then with your breadth of musical knowledge and radio experience. Thank you for always giving the artist your full attention, and for spending the time to share your insights with us. ❤
The behind the scenes on Patreon said that he only had 10 days from having the idea to filming the video. I wish I knew how he blended two songs that were released 40 years apart and made them feel contemporary to each other, then put a rap in the middle without it feeling too jarring! It's wonderful.

Tell me he's NOT channeling a lil' Smokey Robinson in his head voice -- right?? And the subtle move to Message before the 2nd verse of Back On 74 via the guitar like is genius... already setting us up. Plus the Easter Eggs in the rap... Tina Turner, Angelina, Tomb Raider, Green -- golf/spliff plus the Nas reference with the .. pause. Brilliant !!

Your explanation about the past imagining itself to be the future and the future trying to describe the past. It was the best review yet! I think that is why he is so popular with all generations of music lovers. He touches us all in some way even if we don't understand it. His songs and his voice has bought me back into the fold of falling in love with music once again. I pretty sure I had lost that love along the way but he has inspired me to seek and love it once again.

Love your analysis, as always you are spot on. Something I would add is the love and respect that Ren always shows to the music he is playing, and the musicians he is creating that music with. He often breaks into a smile when his collaborator does something he likes (he did it at least once in this video at the backing singers). And his ego is nowhere to be seen - he just gets lost in the joy of creating/sharing that with others.

Saw Sting open for the Dead in Vegas and Bruce Hornsby was playing keyboards for the Dead! It wasn't announced beforehand, tickets always just said "Special Guests" because they never knew who they could get. About 4 or 5 minutes into the show, you could tell everyone had the same thought, "Holy shit...is that Sting?" He didn't play any Police stuff and very little solo stuff. It was this cool but strange Jazz/Fusion collection of old songs. I guess he got a contact high and just forgot his set list, I dunno. But it was a good show.
      Cheers,
      Eric

Check out Jungle's Back on 74. It came out only 6 months ago. They are known for their 1 take videos, too. Their original is faster/dancy.
He slowed the tempo on both songs, changed the key, and threw the Message in a Bottle riff into the second part of Back on 74, before you hear it again at the end, where he channels a bit of Sting vocalizing.
Love his own double entendre rap. 😊
