But I hope they have a win with the z9, if really love to be able to make a confident switch back to Nikon and know that it will work time and time again (surf photography is very very demanding on af, so they're really honing to have to bring their a game with the z9).

I am very impressed in just the second mirrorless camera Nikon has came this far. The Z9 looks like the model that is going to take them over the top and that technology will flow down stream. Like Nikon did from the D5 to the D850 and D500. The Z mount lenses are already crushing it they just need to catch up with AF and that looks to be happening very soon.

There is something else no one seems to talk about. And I want to ask you two. Nikon vs Sony when it comes to TTL performance for OCF and ND filters. I used Sony with both Profoto and Godox equipment and TTL consistently failed to produce good results with wide apertures (it heavily underexposed). This does not happen to me with Nikon bodies, unless I screw my metering (user error). I currently use TTL to get an initial good estimate of flash power in unusual situations , and I then switch to manual flash for consistency. With Nikon I get almost the same results I get with a flash meter. With Sony, under those same conditions (say f/1.4+ND(-6), ISO100 and 1/125s) TTL underexposes. Have you guys seen this behavior Manny, Francisco?

Most of the offerings out there at f1.2 are phenomenal with all of the manufacturers. Even the Nikon 50mm F1.8 S is phenomenal although not classified as "fast glass" I would say it kicks the crap out of the older F1.4 "fast glass" and it's super lightweight. If you are not a Nikon fan - that's cool but I don't think your arguments hold a lot of "weight" 😉

I shoot weddings full time for 15 years, I'm used to film, SLR, and in the end shot with the D850. Zero problems with the z7ii. I'm going to wait though to see what they come out with.... 8 etc. Thougt about 9, but I'm fine with this, and hopefully they can come up with an in between 9 and 7ii without bulkiness of 9.

Forgive me. This might be because I am still on a DSLR, but pretty much the first thing I learned was to select the AF point myself and not use something like auto area AF, exactly because you leave it up to the camera, and I want to decide where it should focus. Even if an R5 decides to focus where I want it 95% if the time, I’d still rather choose the AF point myself. You say it’s a workaround. Again, maybe it’s because I’m using a DSLR, but I can’t imagine thinking like that.

The fact that Area and Eye AF may not put a box on the subject is not really important. I suspect in real life, it would take you about 2 seconds to choose the right AF mode and get the shot.

Just because the square doesn’t move as fast as Sony or Canon over the eyeball, it doesn’t mean that you will get an out of focus picture if you take a picture and the square isn’t directly on the eye...The picture will still be 100% in focus because the camera already knows what needs to be in focus, it’s a machine mechanism, so we can truly say that the square is for atheistic purposes....lol. The issue is that it's a non-issue on Sony and Canon bodies, which is something Nikon engineers are undoubtedly acutely aware of.
Whether that's a future firmware update, a mark III future model with a next generation image processor, more autofocus points on sensor, or whatever; the technicals don't really matter for practical users, Nikon is still lagging in autofocus relative to its key competitors.
But since autofocus isn't the prime selling consideration for all shooters, to these consumers, it's also a non-issue as Nikon users.

Thanks for that, you pointed to the major issue with the Z6 II: the back focus.
The AF in Nikon's cameras is 'an eternal issue'. Even the firmware V1.3 for Z6 Ii does not improve the issue. I have complained about the back-focus in Nikon for years, with D500, D7000, over D7200, even D7500 and recently also Z6 II and Z50. It is frustrating for how long Nikon ignores its user and fan base. These cameras will just for no apparent reason ignore even numerous subjects in foreground and focus on the far background: trees, sky, horizon. Maybe the algorithms in the fabled Z9 will finally solve it, now that Nikon in 2020 is merely the distant 3rd in the market share. Maybe they finally awake "oops, we should have respected our users."

Some very good comments on the Z7II. I am a Nikon Fanboy but can't say I am the biggest fan of the Z camera, as I just can't get used to the hand grip, which feels inferior to something like the D850, also, I prefer the button layout of the D850 (something the Z9 looks to be more similar to).
Where I will defend Nikon is video and lenses. Nikon's philosophy with top end video is to record it externally to something like the Atomos Ninja 5, which has various advantages. Longer recording times, a better viewing screen (you don't need a tilt out screen) and exceptional quality video.
As for the lenses. Nikon has been slow when it comes to releasing Z mount ultrafast glass but they have almost completed their 1.8 lens line up, which is exceptional quality and Nikon already has a huge amount of glass for their F mount, which is easily transferred over.
Nikon have said that they will announce minimum10 new lenses over the next year (I suspect several for the Z9 at the Olympics), which is actually a huge amount of glass, with the only really maybe Sigma being close and Canon beating Nikon in terms of glass released.
I won't comment on the af, because you are much more knowledgeable than I on the current AF of the Z 7II.
Really at the moment, you can't go wrong with any of the camera systems (except maybe Pentax) and what ever you get is going to be good.

I'm not looking to switch from Sony (I used to shoot Nikon). From what I see from the Z9, its finally gotten Nikon near Sony and Canon in performance.
The issue is the less expensive Sony and Canon cameras work as good or better than the Z9 when it comes to AF and tracking. The A7IV has the same AF tech the A1 has. Canon has similar promulgation.
If Nikon can get the Z9 AF into the z6 and/or z7, I think you'll see more people adopting them. Unfortunately they waited so long to to jump into mirrorless, a lot of former Nikon shooters already sold their glass (raises hand).
I hope the figure it out. It will only help the innovations if there is more than 2 serious players.
