I think it's a weird localization thing America used to do, honestly? Japan is normally very accepting and a huge advocate of cute things. The west used to and still occasionally rewrites this into a form of masculinity instead to "appeal" to their Target audience. It's very jarring in some contexts.

Fun fact, girls in Japan do feel a bit of dislike towards man who likes cutesy/girly stuff. Well it's a different story nowadays but during the game's development, that has always been the case.

Persona 4 is probably one of the only japanesse games talking about gender perceptions and masculinity. Kanji is also only a teenager, males are expected to maintain the status of "real man" a concept that glorifies stocism, strenght, virility and dominance or risk losing this value group statut or that makes them feminine or weak. Toxic masculinity is still a major problem today that every men face similar to sexism toward woman, saying the problem is just back then is ignorance ex: The male suicide rate is several times higher than female, for generations, many societies have encouraged men to be “strong” and not admit they’re struggling. Your brother probably faced the same issue.
