    I struggled for years getting sharp scans out of Silverfast and a V600, I found that scanning at 3200ppi then downsizing the image resolution in photoshop to the effective scanning max resolution (1560ppi for V600). In post apply Nik Collection Sharpening FTW!

    How do you actually get this tiff result from Silverfast? Mine always looks similar to the negative scanning process, even if I scan it as a positive.

    Thank you soo much for sharing your work-flow with us, it helped me a lot! :) I also tried to do the white frame trick with figma but couldn't import the tiff-files. Figma says it doesn't recognize the format. Do you know a trick for importing tiff-Files? :)

    I have Silverfast but could not figure out how to batch scan. Can you make a video about it :)

    • @CafeCreativeYT
      @CafeCreativeYT 3 роки тому +2

      Click the frame tool after you've drawn on a frame to scan and click duplicate frame or use the find frames for film strip to auto select all your negatives
      Then after you have all the frames set the way you like. Just select image and then batch scan and choose the file destination.
      It's important to setup one frame and set everything you want and then select copy settings to all frames if you are scanning positives since each frame have different settings upon creation.
      I don't plan on making a video on the topic but hope this helps and you should be able to find most Silverfast videos using a batch scan

    Hi ! What are you making the black for ? Is it to create an outline ? If so, I believe you can set an outer border directly to the image. I might be wrong, but I believe the problem you were running into with the alignement is because figma is pixel-perfect. You can't have sub-pixels, so if you're trying to align odd numbers at a small scale you could run in this sort of issues.
    Very thorough video anyway, thanks ! Just bought my girlfriend a V600 for her birthday so I'm checking out lots of film scanning videos, it's fascinating :)

      @@jordanroberttaylor No need for a video here's how to do it...
      1. Add solid color under add fill or adjustment layers button under your layer window
      2. Then drag this auto sized solid white square under your image
      3. Click C to crop the white solid and resize it to 1:1 or whichever size on the top left of Photoshop. Drag it bigger than your image.
      4. Select your image and use the positioning tools to center it in the middle of the white solid.
      5. Export as web and resize it to 1080 width for instagram.
      Find Blake Pope on UA-cam he shows these steps in one of his videos.
      Hope these steps help, I'm really not interested in making this channel full of short tutorials, only longer form ones on big processes.

    whenever i use try to scan it as a tiff on silver fast they always come out so red and not right, then going to nlp it doens't work how its suppose to, any help?

    • @CafeCreativeYT
      @CafeCreativeYT 3 роки тому

      Hey Martell. That could be because of your scanner settings or your approach to white balancing in lightroom. Remember NLP comes with a TIFF Scan Prep in lightroom that will adjust your negatives color for converting. You can run the tiff scan Prep quickly and then grab white point from the films edges and then convert for a cleaner color to a tiff scan. With scanning film it's all different depending on alot of variables so try all the ways to white balance an image before converting.
      Hope this helps !

  • @jordanroberttaylor
    @jordanroberttaylor 3 роки тому

    Any reason to do the tiff scan prep in lightroom before using Negative Lab Pro? Is this to keep the large file size for quality for when one might print the photo?

    • @CafeCreativeYT
      @CafeCreativeYT 3 роки тому +1

      Its part of Negative Lab Pro where it auto changes the color scheme and preps it for the algorithms conversion. There's been issues with the color profile of tiff scans with programs like Epson scan for example so its just a prep change for the NLP conversion.
      Thanks for the comment!

    For my scanning pipeline is vitally important to find the way to get the IR channel from SilverFast DNG scans and save it as a separate file. Now it is the year 2021 and I still haven't found any solution.
    The SilverFast official forum is premoderating ANY comment and none of my comments and questions were submitted by that forum. They make me really mad cuz I bought and already upgraded both scanning and editing software from them. It's a lot of money. I need to have this channel separately cuz I want to use it in Photoshop. Cuz for 35 mm iSRD works well but for medium and large format it works very bad: when you align dust pass to one of the corner it fits perfectly but to other corners are shifted and the mask doesn't subtract dust in a proper way. And also for some images, I would love to use Negative Lab Pro and subtract dust after in photoshop without deleting defects manually and spend a lot of time. If anyone managed to extract an IR pass from SilverFast's DNGs please share the solution!!

      This is very interesting and I've never tried to do so, hopefully somebody online has the solution for you !

    is there a reason you’re not using DNG? Negative lab pro guidelines recommends 48bit HDR RAW DNG if you’re using silverfast?

    • @CafeCreativeYT
      @CafeCreativeYT 3 роки тому +1

      I use dng now on occasion but I've gotten great results from tiff and dng positives using silver fast to NLP.
      It really depends on the film stock and how it reacts. Ive had certain film that's worked best with a tiff and simple auto wb in lightroom surprisely.
      For precise landscape shots I may even do a manual conversion in photoshop using Alex Burke's method.
      My process has changed a bit since this video but it's possible to get good images using either TIFF or Dng in my experience converting for years.

  • @DenisJust

    why is this so hard? Back in good old days did people struggle to get good colors from film as well? Seriously all this software is just waay too much process. There should be a quick, easy batch process with couple of clicks that gives good results. I shoot film for years now and more often than not the colors are horrible and each photo takes long time to bring it to something good/acceptable. I paid for NLP, SilverFast, Lightroom & photoshop. Nothing works well for color film. (((

    • @johnpap9328

      Silverfast works but it seems only on older emulsions. I have a superia 200 from early 2000s that scans perfectly using the appropriate negafix preset. Same films from 2010s have very odd colours and i had to create a new negafix preset. This is especially hard sometimes as one has to guess one or several gray points.
      I find that the process is a little easier with silverfast HDR since I can first scan raw files from several films of the same type and time and then go back and forth between different raws to find the sweet spot for neutralising the orange mask.
      PS and LR are useless on neutralising the orange mask imo.
