These plants are not favored by everyone because of their strong, bold look & tough, pointed leaves. They’re definitely not the soft, “touchy feely” kind of plants. I, on the other hand, love them & have quite a few of them. I’ve had many varieties, both growing in pots & in the ground in my Santa Barbara garden. Yes, indoors & out - I like sansevierias that much.
Their modern, edgy feel appeals to me along with how easy they are to take care of. I now live in Tucson, Arizona where I have them growing in my home along with some in pots outside in the bright shade. The strong desert sun would fry them but they handle the dry air like champs.
These evergreen perennials are very long lived, unlike some houseplants. If you’re looking for your own snake plant, there are many different species and varieties on the market with more being introduced each year.
You can find them tall or short, with round, flat or concave leaves, & variegated with dark green, silver, light green, yellow, chartreuse or white. My personal favorites are: the old standbys Sansevieria trifasciata and “laurentii”, cylindrica (this is the 1 they braid), “moonshine“, “futura superba” & “gold hahnii”.
Some reasons to love these plants:
Sansevierias are one of the best plants when it comes to air purification. They filter out formaldehyde and nitrogen oxide. They do this at night time making them great plants for the bedroom. You can go to bed & this plant will clean the oxygen around you. Maybe this is the reason why it’s considered they’re considered to be good luck plants.
They’re virtually indestructible unless you have a heavy hand with the watering can or place them in a hot, sunny window. Snake Plants seem to thrive on the dry air in our homes, as well as neglect. The more you ignore them, the better they do. This is why they are one of the easiest care houseplants.
And, as I said earlier, I also love Snake Plants because of their bold, architectural, sassy look.

I am so excited to see Snake Plants coming into trend! My Grandmother in Phoenix had her Mother-In-Laws Tongue growing wild in her backyard and would propagate and give out as gifts when I was a very young child.

Mine sent up a flower stalk when I stressed it out by under watering. The glorious heavy perfume was the only way I found the stalk. I felt like a horrible plant mom, but it was a thrilling time to see the flowers up close and personal.

My sansevieria is drooping... I normally put my plant out on my porch, in the shade all day, and have been do this every year. However this year, I have noticed several leaves, for lack of a better word, are drooping down instead of standing up right. I had to repot it last year because it was getting too crowded. I think it is the pot, it has no drain holes in the bottom. The plant is from my Granny's original which probably makes it over 60 year old. I don't want to lose it. Thanks. P.S. Mine is like the one on your right in the video.

great video ! I really enjoy all your videos you post. full of awesome information. I recently bought a Sansevieria trifasciata from my local nursery and I love it. i got into house plants and plants in general bout 7 months ago. it has helped my PTSD/depression and anxiety majorly. Do you usually do the one to two knuckles rule of when you need to water them again ? thank you so much !

Hi Jeremy - Plants are therapy & I believe they make us all feel good. I went through a phase where I didn't want plants in the house but now I can't have enough. I water my Snake Plants thoroughly & let them go completely dry before watering them again. They store water in their fibrous roots & rhizomes. I've never done the knuckle rule. I'm more of an instinct waterer. Thanks for watching! Nell

    • @wordoverkill
      @wordoverkill 5 років тому

All types of snake plants purify the air, the only difference is the leaf shape, mature size, and color patterns. So go crazy and collect all of the snake plant types, you can't go wrong with them! I am a neglectful houseplant mother (I forget to water them, but I do great with my veggie garden, hmmmm?) So if I can keep this plant alive, anyone with a window can!!!

My mom gave me some of hers that she's had forever and it was just outgrowing it's home. My boyfriend and I split up what we got into two potters. There's so many little leaves coming up now but in one of the pots, all the growth seems to be on one side. Should I remove it from the dirt, move it so it's centered again, and replant?

    Hello Nell,
I have several snake plant varieties. The one I am a little concerned about is my moonshine. I ordered it online and it was delivered in perfect condition. I transplanted it in march to a terra cotta clay pot using cactus/succulent mix potting soil. I water my snake plants once a month. When I received my moonshine I got two plants/bundles. One has grown new shoots that are a foot tall. The other leaf bundle has no new growth but looks healthy. Any suggestions on why my other plant/bundle is not growing? I have both of them in the same 6in pot.

I just bought a snake plant today after seeing this video a few days ago. I also bought a pot that was about two sizes bigger then the pot it came in, thinking it would grow into it, at the same time I bought a smaller pot meant for an Aloe Vera. Would you recommend I put the snake plant in the smaller pot (it's the same size as the pot it came in) or should I put it in the bigger pot? By the way my dad got a big smile on his face when he saw me bring home a snake plant because his mom grew them for many years, what a happy coincidence.

Hi, Nell. Enjoying your videos! I've always thought tall sansevierias with straight upward fronds look especially nice-and I've bought ones look that way, but eventually all the fronds seems to lean and/or flop over, despite good indirect light, occasional watering, etc. Do you have any tips to keep them upright?

      D. Ashworth I was given 1 last year in june.. I placed it in a mid-low light area.. I water it about 2-3x a month.. I have it in a black plastic pot.. and I just pulled it out 2 repot in fresh soil just the other day.. that is when I realized how much it has grown and grown babies that I nvr realized.. it really is low maintenance.. I just water it thoroughly and drain it.. then leave it an ignore it in the corner and its thriving.. maybe change the location of ur plant.. play around w diff locations where it gets some llight.. like moderate lighting...

Hi Indra - That's a Plumbago capensis or Cape Plumbago. I love Snake Plants. As for Camellias, I saw my share of them when I lived in San Francisco. Fortunately, none here in the desert! Nell

Karla - I wouldn't call them fast growing at all, & they grow slow in lower light conditions. Mine grow moderately because I'm in a warm & sunny climate. Nell
