Last year I made a 2.5 hour roadtrip to see Koe no Katachi. I have learned my lesson. "Yamada Naoko films" are now included on the list of driving impairments that leave me in such rapture that it becomes unwise to make a 2.5 hour night-time drive back home. As much as it pains me; I will likely have to have to wait till the home release to see Liz.

Liz and the Blue Bird is a different level of anime. For those that can stomach the art house style and the slow cooking pace Naoko Yamada delivers another masterful punch in the stomach using the barest material and the most intimate tone. No drama here, just let the film gently push you and ... forget about driving immediately afterwards.

It's such a lowkey story that I'm genuinely floored and elated that there are so many videos (and people!) out there who recognise that this film is a true masterpiece and work of art, and I've been thinking about it a lot, and from both a technical and emotional point, it's completely perfect.

Sounds like a pretty worthwhile anime to watch. The animation is really smooth and captured the frame of beauty and the feeling of a song that played on each frame of movement.
I'll just wait for a DVD release. Thanks for making a video about it to get me noticed on it :P

I'm so pumped for your up coming Wandering Son video! Like, not to say it's my favorite anime, but it's my favorite anime. I laughed and cried (mostly cried) all through out it and the animation style was so beautiful. Not only that, but the OST is one of the most beautiful things I've ever had the privilege to hear. Even though I can't remember having major gender issues in my life, the characters were still relatable and their struggles were something I felt a large amount of empathy towards. I'm also kind of blessed to own one of the copies of the manga. It was for sale on Amazon from a goodwill (a thrift store) and I was able to get it for a little less than 20 dollars. Every other copy I could find was insanely priced (I'm talking 50-100 dollars). I just love the series as a whole and can't wait to see your video on it.

I just saw this in theaters today, and I gotta say, this review/promotion is very accurate. The sound design and music are amazing, the artstyle variation is great, and the polish is as good as you'd expect from KyoAni. However, actual enjoyment of the plot itself is still very much subjective; I don't think the execution of the plot itself is anything special or amazing, it's just an extreme coat of polish and atmosphere on an okay product.
I didn't really want to see this film from the plot blurb, but the everything-else-about-it this video covered got me to see it. And I liked everything but the central plot, so I really can't complain when that was what didn't interest me. It's a good movie.

Since you're already somewhat hooked, I recommend not getting too familiar with these sounds just yet - if there is even a remote chance you'll be able to go to a cinema for Liz eventually ....
To recycle, a little, ... Despite all the videos already officially released I still find it tricky to "present" the soundtrack by itself. Even though the sounds in those clips were probably instrumental in persuading me to go to the cinema for Liz and the Blue Bird -as much as the intriguing first visuals, and the focus on particular characters. For those who try to avoid any and all spoilers it is probably best not to listen to the incorporated samples or the soundtrack as a whole either. It is probably best to experience this music for the first time while in a seat in a theatre ... or to keep the sounds as fresh as possible. In essence the musical compositions "shouldn't" be separated from the visuals on screen with which they are so cleverly and deliberately presented simultaneously ...

Rather than an experimental masterpiece Liz and the bluebird is a very conventional disaster that could have been a lot better if it hadn't tried so hard to be conventional. I was nervous about the animation style that is so different from the other Hibike productions, but I actually got used to it very fast and it did come with more detail than the animation of the series. The only instance where the animation did bother me was with Kumiko, who it really didn't suit IMO. The story is a nice study of the relationship between Nozomi and Mizore. It is a story that shows both girls needing to find the courage to break free from the complacent rut their relationship had evolved in and question the nature of that relationship so that they could both make that relationship stronger and find what they wanted to do with their future. The fable the writers created as a metaphor for that relationship, however, is probably the worst one they could come up with. And both stories were inherently damaged by the writers' insistence to conform to the convention of anxiously keeping from portraying blonde female characters with any "negative" emotions and just as anxiously forcing "negative" emotions onto female characters with black hair. From the beginning, not only is the Liz and the bluebird story a terrible analog for what the main characters are going through, but the narrative of the fable itself is terribly flawed. We are constantly asked to see Liz as a lonely, sad girl. But during the entire fable, Liz is never portrayed as such. There are few stories in which the anxious fear of portraying blonde female characters as suffering from emotional distress damages the narrative so much as in this one. What we see on screen is the exact opposite of what we are being told. Liz, in fact, is portrayed as a happy girl who plays with the animals in the forest, is appreciated as an employee and is beloved by the people in the village. Because writers dare not portray blonde characters as sad or lonely the story makes a lie out of the narrative. To make matters worse, the bluebird which we are supposed to see as caged trough her desire to ease Liz's non-existant loneliness actually comes and goes whenever she pleases. The premise of the fable is that Liz breaks her heart to find the courage to tell the Bluebird that she is free to pursue her life. But trough the writers fear of straying from convention and portray a blonde girl in distress we are presented with a happily SMILING Liz telling the distressed bluebird to leave her. And all this time, contrary to the relationship between the main characters, NEITHER GIRL WOULD HAVE LOST A THING BY MAINTAINING THEIR RELATIONSHIP AS WAS. Contrary to the claim stated by the narrative, Liz was happy with or without the bluebird. The bluebird came and went as she saw fit. They were both happy! There was absolutely no reason at all for Liz to make her big "sacrifice". Apart from the totally flawed analogy the mc's keep making between them and the fable, their part of the story is actually pretty good and the side story of Mizore's admiring kohai seeking her friendship is a very sweet one. They each realize in the end where their relationship went wrong and how they should fix it. But again, the anxious desire of the writers to conform to conventions damages the story, because apparently it is not allowed to have a drama about a relationship between two female characters without unfavorably comparing one to the other or without a black haired girl having an emotional scene. And thus we are presented with Nozomi; Mizore's best friend who is portrayed as someone who has no ambition in music, who is portrayed as lacking any competitive feeling when it comes to music, who is an accomplished enough musician to recognize a talented player from a non-talented one, who like all the other members of the band and probably everyone in school should be aware of the fact that Mizore and Reina are two musical prodigies who most likely will go far if they choose to pursue a career as a musician. We are presented with this girl having a jealous emotional outburst because, so she claims, she didn't realize Mizore was so much better than her. THE ENTIRE SCHOOL KNOWS THAT MIZORE IS A MUSICAL GENIUS! where is this coming from? Why are we even supposed to believe this could ever be an issue to the girl who during the entire movie, no, the entire series has been portrayed as a person who is very wishy-washy about being a band member and a musician? These are very serious narrative flaws that damage an otherwise nice movie irreparably. And had the writers found the courage their main characters have and dared to defy convention, this might have been a masterpiece. As it is, Liz and the bluebird is a nice movie at best.

IT'S NOT SCREENIG IN AUSTRALIA, DAMMIT!
And we usually get anime distibuted here earlier than most places including the US, so this is really frustrating that one of the anime films I want to see most in cinemas isn't coming anytime soon :(. Maybe I'll write the distributers a letter to let them know there's at least someone who wants it.
Oh well, at least we've Penguin Highway in cinemas rn, I'll go see that soon.

Eh, who knows, it could still happen. They only tend to announce they're screening an anime about 3 weeks to a month before the screening so it could still happen.

I really don't understand why people put out videos for films that haven't released yet. Only a select few people who happen to live near a cinema in the US can see the film right now. Like I can't really engage with the video when I'm not going to watch the movie for like a year. The points don't mean anything unless I have watched or plan to watch it in the immediate future, I'll just forget about this video. MB did it with this film and with Maquia, which only just came out (although I'm waiting for better fansubs).

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. We cannot purify ourselves, but Christ lived that perfect sinless, pure life and then allotted it to our "account". That's where our righteousness comes from. Not from any good, works that you or I could do.
It is not based on the amount of good works we do. God starts the changes, He carries it on, and He completes it in those who let Him.
it's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power again, through His power and instruction).
He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, forgiveness, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER
