The film was released in 1983, twenty years after the book was published. The film is a masterpiece, won the Palm D'Or the year of release, which was so well deserved.
This live version captures the entire spirit of the main title, with all the instruments from the soundtrack recording. To see Sakamoto in his youth, only four years after the release of the film, remarkable.
I'll bet Debussy would have loved Sakamoto, as Sakamoto has a lot of Debussy in his melody. This theme song was immensely popular in Japan, and Sakamoto was revered as a national treasure in his country - he will a l w a y s be remembered as a musical pioneer and genius.
