- Harry Belafonte last appeared on Democracy Now! in 2016 at a special event at the historic Riverside Church in New York to celebrate our 20th anniversary. He co-headlined the event with Noam Chomsky in their first public appearance together. Belafonte spoke about Donald Trump, who had just been elected president, and ongoing struggles for freedom and justice in the United States. "We just have to get out our old coats, dust them off, stop screwing around and just chasing the good times, and get down to business," he said. "There’s some ass-kicking out here to be done. And we should do it."

It must feel good hanging out with, and interviewing people like Harry. He did much smiling in his lifetime.
This beautiful man has moved to eternity. I mourn his loss as if a member of my family had died. Because he was. He gave his talents, his life, his soul to one of the most precious aspirations we humans can aspire to. Justice and human dignity. Life is better because Harry Belafonte made it better. "Daylight come and I want to go home."
In the 50’s, this man inspired me to practice my trumpet, so I may contribute to our school marching band. ❤

My first concert at 12 at the GREEK theater in Los Angeles in 1968. I was spill bound. He, moon walked,across the stage, before Michael Jackson made it popular.
Few will understand the confidence and courage that we, the South African exiles in New York, gained from this inspirational man who got into the trenches with us in the anti-apartheid fight! We had him on a throne, but he remained among the most humble superstars by coming to break bread with us! MHDDSRIP! 🙏🏿😪🙏🏿😪🙏🏿
Still waiting for some network to play the clip of Mr. Belafonte taking the entire Democratic Party/Establishment to task right to their faces about 15 years ago...just an absolute thing of beauty & most of the crowd had no idea they were being completely evicerated by his keen intellect & powerful, sincere, & 100% accurate words!
A fierce, bright and courageous soul has left us; and we are all less. I will miss his voice of reason, and I will miss his voice in song.
