  • On the 21st April 1918 this is the location of the famous Manfred Von Richthofen, Red Baron crash site. The Fighter Ace pilot from World War I with 80 kills to his name was brought down by Australian Machine Gun ground crews near Vaux-Sur-Somme. Sgt. Cedrick Popkin was using a Vickers Machine Gun and had the best chance positioned on the rise of the slope. Robert Buie was positioned on top of the hill on anti-aircraft duty for the Artillery protecting the gun limbers and using a Lewis Machine Gun. Almost point blank and directly underneath the baron as he flew over. After being shot he had twenty seconds to live and did remarkably well to land the aircraft.

Shot down by Australian infantry, which just shows that no Allied Airman was able to beat the Red Baron.

Buie was on the wrong side of the barons aircraft to be responsible as per the autopsy and fatal bullet placement. Popkin was on the correct side as most likely the one who shot him down. Or an Australian rifleman close to Popkin.

If not, there certainly should be.
      I consider it sacred ground.
