What an amazing adventure Mark, so glad you made it out of that wave. When I saw you go under my heart stopped, but you fought with your life to crawl back to safety. A day we won't soon forget and a reminder that with the help of friends and strangers you can get through anything. Safe travels my friend!
Such good memories! I suspect this is just the first of many adventures we have in Mexico. Vallarta is next! Thanks so much for keeping me sane. My favorite quote from the video is of you and Aranca at the breakfast bar, “Every day is great.”
I have several. Now I just need to use them. haha. I normally use them when I’m at the beach, but we weren’t planning on getting even remotely wet. Lesson learned!
Hi there, I hope you're doing better after these unfortunate events and also that you had great moments after that. Been a while so I was just checking on you (sort of). Cheers!
My door key works in the lock even with a dead fob battery but if the chip is damaged the truck won’t start. Love my LR 3 but the electronics give me breakdown anxiety. So I carry backup fobs, GAP II, second starting battery and more when traveling. Now I’m fixing the sunroof drain tubes and windshield leaks. Thinking of building a pre-1980 diesel 4x4 to cure my LR3 anxiety. Rotate your fobs because they charge while driving. Also go old school by hiding a fob under the truck but use a small Pelican box firmly fastened inside a skid plate. Oh, and put an emergency cable on your tailgate lock before it breaks. It’s a real pain to open the rear especially when you have gear and drawers inside. I really like your videos and travels.
I’ve been all over the US and Mexico with the LR4 with very little problems. I think I had all my big issues at once during this crazy day. I’m fixing the door and things and hope to be all good. I wonder if the LR3 and LR4 have different issues. I know that Vera from LRtime has an issue with her LR3 rear door, but I don’t think they have the same issue with their LR4.
@@ShiftyDrifty LR 4 may have corrected problems that LR 3’s had and LR did issue bulletins re LR 3 problems. Evolution of the truck. I’ve had my LR 3 for 16-years, know it’s issues and I’ll probably keep it as a project truck. Runs great and is all original parts (230,000 miles and not a mall crawler). Vera would like it.
It's never boring on any of your adventures! I'm sure Aaron is either thinking, "I'm never hanging out with Mark again" or, and more likely, "I can't wait to see what happens the next time we hook up!". So glad it worked out and so sorry for your equipment! Always beautiful footage and always interesting dialog. You are definitely living a great story buddy! Can't wait to meetup the next time you're back in town!
Oh man! Serious adventure, certainly great memories. I hope you can replace your gear asap. I learned so much about photography from watching your videos a few years ago.
Thanks, Adrian! I’ll replace the gear eventually. Things happen, it’s just part of the journey. The photo videos are still happening, I just took a little break from them the past few months. 16 years of photo tutorials, I think I earned a break. 😁
OMG Mark! Now, that’s an adventure! Glad you solved that. Sorry some gear got bad. Hope the rest of your trip is way better. See you in Mexico City. Take care
Gracias Humberto! I hope I can make it the Mexico City, but I’m not sure now. It depends on how many workshops I sold last quarter. And gas in Mexico is SO EXPENSIVE! My fingers are crossed.
I had the same issue this past weekend. Went to a funeral and it was raining. Next morning my fib didn't want to open the door so I thought it was the fob I had when it was raining (I got rained on because if you drive a Land Rover you don't need an umbrella right). Turned out that my battery died. Nothing worked in my case. Called a locksmith. The double on the Discovery 4 is really solid. He couldn't open the car using a wire. He had to drill out my lock. I have since added an external way to charge my battery using solar or AC (I made a video).
I was loving this adventure, I'm from Jalisco 3 hours south of Puerto Vallarta. To bad you had to shorten the trip. But it could had been worse, I'm glad your ok. Have a great time in Mexico and safe trip
It definitely changed my plans, but I would say it *was* the adventure. I can replace the gear, but I value the experience and the good times with Aaron even more. Sometimes we win, and sometimes we learn. That was a learning day. Hahaha
One thing I learned, if the Rover is in a “high RF area”, like a city, near an airport, etc., it will drain the battery. Every time someone hits a key fob it will “wake up” the car. The same is true if you don’t keep your FOB away from your car at night. It won’t ever go all the way to sleep. Those modern electronics just keep slowly draining the battery.
It’s one of those days I’ll remember for many years. So, in the long run, I win. Good friends and memories are more valuable than a little action camera. 😊
Really lucky! You certainly could be in the bottom of the ocean now! Luckily your gear can be replaced 😜 Next time you get near water put your key fob (and other electronics you are not using) inside a waterproof pouch (ziplock does work)
I’ve used the waterproof bags for many years. Everything on the bike is always in a waterproof bag, they work great. This was a spur of the moment adventure and I wasn’t thinking I’d get anywhere near the water. Lesson learned!

Oh my goodness Mark, thank god you didn’t get pulled out to sea! Did your camera’s survive? I remember when your bike got stolen in London. Do you remember the time when we were in the pub in London and someone stole someone’s camera bag? Hopefully are soon on your feet again, jubiB
Hahahah! I absolutely remember the camera bag getting stolen. I tell that story all the time. Thanks so much for the good wishes. Next time I'm in London we have to meet up again.
Mark hope you recover from this, been watching since your Adorama days! If you like to travel and not do repair videos JUST BUY A DAM TOYOTA!!!! LOL!!!!! looking forward to seeing some more travel videos!!!

I really liked this episode. Not because of the problems, which did make it very entertaining, but because I see together two of the teachers from my beginnings both as a photographer (Mark) and as a retoucher (Aaron)... I didn't know you were friends, what a surprise 😯. And double surprise to hear Aaron speaking Spanish so fluently!, you know, because I'm from Colombia... Anyway, sorry for the equipment, but I'm glad it didn't get worse (Mark's integrity). What an adventure. Greetings to Mark and Aaron. 😁 @plearn @aaronnace2900
Aaron is such a great guy. He’s the same on camera as he is in real life. We met many years ago at PPA or Imaging USA or maybe both. In 2014 we were in The Bahamas together for an FStoppers conference, I think that’s where we really connected the first time. So good to reconnect here in Mexico.

cool story to tell later, but so glad you will be able to tell it, that water changes so fast.
I know now! Glad it all worked out for the best.
Mark, you need to get one of those waterproof pouches for your car keys, cellphone etc. They work like a charm.

Cannon beach has some gotcha type wave activity also and is marked as a tsunami zone. Never visited this one but wave activity is familiar to me.
