  • This screen is one of many from Things That Made Us Go Hmmm.... by The Watchmen. It's not one I've ever seen before so that's always a nice surprise to find something "new" :-) The demo is actually pretty simple but I love its style and how it is completely full-screen along with the great Mad Max music! Yup, I liked it a lot.

oh there's far far better out there for the regular ST, but I still really liked this screen. Something about it :)

Mad Max covered here the Harold Faltermeyer theme from the movie "Fletch".

That music is a remake from the movie "Fletch" starring Cheavy Chase and is a classic rendition of the Harold Faltermeyer tune. 💫

Never seen this screen before - shame on me! I'll have to dig out the disk image and have another look. I do wonder sometimes if non-ST owners think 'fullscreen' was just a mode that could simply be turned on, rather than... actually, I'll ask here - back in the 90's a friend of mine said that it was achieved by flicking to 70hz when the crt's beam was at the end (and presumably the start?) of the each scan line. Is this correct (or close)? I'm pretty sure that bottom border removal was done by changing to 60hz so it made sense at the time. 😕
Either way, thanks for the upload!

tbh that's getting way too technical for me! You might be best asking somewhere like Atari-Forum. But I think you're right about the top/bottom borders and 60hz. There are programs to use overscan with GEM and many games and demos also use overscan. It's not something the ST does without a decent programmer but it's more than possible. Out of interest check this out, doesn't slowdown the ST at all... ataricrypt.blogspot.com/2016/08/whats-wrong-with-this-picture.html
There's also images that you can create in overscan with up to 512 colours... ataricrypt.blogspot.com/2021/06/super-excellent-graphics-demo.html

@@AtariCrypt Good point! - I had a look into it and after reading a couple of articles it seems, if I get this right, that as well as the 50/60hz flick in order to over-scan (top/bottom border removal), the coder would put the ST in monochrome when the scan-line started on the left of EVERY LINE - literally following the electron beam of the CRT.. Still trying to get my head around it, but pretty amazing stuff!
