Anyone complaining about the math in this video is not appreciating the gold nuggets in here. If nothing else, the fact that the 3:8 ratio is not widely known or widely taught blows my mind. 98% of the banking tutorials on UA-cam only focus on 2:1 rolling banks. Dr. Dave is one of the few other people I’m aware of that has coached on sliding banks, and even those systems are just 2:1 to 3:8 conversions; they don’t actually teach you the 3:8 track line principle. I for one learned something new, although personally I’d rather whip out my phone to find 3/8ths of my near rail origination number to find my far rail target number. Cuts out all the pesky memorization. I also don’t think it’s that hard to just memorize 8-16-24-32-40, and then multiply the unit number (in multiples of 8) by three to get the corresponding target number. It’s too bad there’s no reliable visual system for 3:8 banks, although Dr.Dave’s twice-plus-tenths is not bad at all. Thanks for the video!

Are You Going To Do More Video's??

I personally like to aim at the mirror system for quickness and simplicity. Once your on that line or close to it just count the dots to the opposite pocket to where you are going. Your banking tangent line will be exactly double the distance on the side you are standing on vs the other side of the table. I use .25 dot increments. Or quarters to get you close. If your still off you can parallel. shift. or adjust over X distance opposite side and the side your standing on X2. Example 1 inch adjustment and 2 inches on your side. I adjust the dots out to where they contract the rail instead of aiming at the dots. Here is what it looks like.

Looks good, I'll check out the link. Thanks.
Yeah, this video (2,4,6,8,, etc) may indeed be accurate, but *for me* ..... there's way too much math/trig for me to bother with it.

Alright Matt, did anyone at goat rodeo ask you what you do when the cueballs not directly lined up behind the object ball?

Congrats..."goat rodeo" is the secret password...and yes you would be surprised how much riding a wild goat is like mastering banks. The real problem is I already took up 33 minutes of your time explaining the basics and I would need another 133 minutes to explain how to transfer spin or throw the OB to widen and shorten banks to "fix" them. Most of that information is readily available on-line and in books like "Banking with the Beard" so I stuck with what was unique to the video...the 2-4-6-8 math. In a nut shell, you can use inside or more speed to shorten a bank and the opposite to widen it, but there's so much more too it...CIT, SIT, contact induced spin, speed, cushion sensitivity, ball "stickiness", tip friction, etc...the list goes on-and-on. So to do justice to "fix a bank" I felt I would need another 3 or 4 episodes to explain how each element contributes to the bank and then how to "blend" everything altogether...which is like tying to explain how to ride a wild animal. You just need to hop on for the ride and learn what works for your goat.

@@mrodenkirchYou squire? Are a dude!! Bought the banking with the beard DVD set alright. Loved it, gotta hand it to the man when they're writing songs about banking with ya! Reading poolology at the minute, in the section on banking he doesn't seem to account for the 1/4 diamond per diamond Ralph mentions. I'll keep firing away at it here though! Thanks very much for taking the time to respond with all that information Matt! I appreciate it 👍

Matt, love the cut of your jib! The throwaway lines ye come out with are very funny. Do you ever shoot online? Do you know of any online shooting tournaments?

To be honest I don't play on-line. I tried the the "isolation tournament" thing once COVID started and somehow ended up in a tournament with Fedor Gorst which quickly ended my on-line tournament aspirations. I play in a weekly ring game here in Cincinnati and have been avoiding pool halls since the pandemic started and spend all my free time making these videos.

anyone have a link to darrin putting 600 balls on table and clearing without hitting a rail ?
cant imagine this is possible :/

I posted a link to his drill in the original description of the video:
      ua-cam.com/video/n9LGIIst5yQ/v-deo.html
Ironically Darren posted a repeat of the video on Christmas 2020:
      ua-cam.com/video/2RwJ5hkwX08/v-deo.html
I apologize for my sarcasm. You have to admit when you first tune into the video it looks like 600 balls are on the table and the fact he never touches another ball during the entire is simply astounding.
Is anyone aware of a recording of someone else completing this drill?
Still the damnedest drill I've ever seen...and now he's done it twice. Incredible Darren. Well done!!!

Organization i just wasted 33 minutes on this confusion. If your brain works like a calculator fine but why not just aim bit past 1/2 and shoot it? Plus you are barely ever exactly in line with cue ball so can't line up the object and cue to get a value. You are making this sound like Common Core math while you reinvent other ways that work
