    im about to buy the 891 from dx and what antenna tuner should i use for the radio to talk on 40 meter

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  5 років тому +3

      Well a resonant antenna is always going to be best. At home I us an MFJ 949E if I need it, but I have a fan dipole cut for the phone portion of 40/20 so I don't have to use a tuner unless I go down to the digital frequencies. When I'm portable I also use resonant antennas. Either a 20M speaker wire dipole, or a Wolf River Coils antenna that I can tune to a good SWR on all bands so I don't use a tuner for that either. It really depends on what kind of antenna you want to run. A long wire will be multi band but will most definitely need a tuner and there are many out there to handle the task. It just depends on what your situation is home vs portable. Unfortunately, there is no 1 size fits all. Over all though, an auto tuner will not have as wide a tuning capability as a manual one so keep that in mind. Although I have zero experience with auto tuners. Tom, N9YO has a great youtube channel called Anything With Wheels and he uses tuners and long wire antennas. Might be another place you can look. Anyway, I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching and commenting. 73

    If I drop the 891 down to 2-5watts or even 10watts could I use it like a QRP Transceiver like the 817/818ND, or the Elecraft KX3?! Portable op's sounds so fun but my ICOM 718 is a bit big :-D

    • @N4KRX
      @N4KRX 5 років тому +1

      I think the FT-891 can only be set as low as 5 watts so, it does qualify as a QRP rig. Also, most people that buy this radio use it for portable operations. Just keep in mind it draws far more current in the receive mode than the 817/818ND, or the Elecraft KX3, thus requiring larger amp hour batteries to run the same length of time as the FT-817/818ND or Elecraft KX3.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  3 роки тому +1

      Depends on which scope function you are using. If you short press the scope button it will just take a quick snap of the band. If you long press it, it will keep scanning and that is when it will mute the audio. Honestly the scope is more a novelty in this radio. Almost worthless in actuality. I never use it. However, that doesn't stop me from saying that I still think its the best radio on the market for a mobile or portable application. I upgraded to the 7300 for the shack but the 891 is still my absolute favorite radio to take out in the field. I used it as a shack radio for over a year and it worked great. I'd say go for it.

  • @bobsaunders3621
    @bobsaunders3621 5 років тому +7

    Well number 1 the 450 sounds far better than the other without any dnr engaged! You are also running the 450 with no ipo engaged on 40 which it should be hence all your noise! Try opening out the filter to wide on the 450 with ipo engaged then run the dnr at 6, how it should be and you wouldnt have the same results. The dnr engaged on the 891 is ok but sounds very very artificial. A comparison yes but not a good one in my humble opinion. Judicious use of the 450s rf gain knob will yield far better results than any dnr by the way, the use of the the 450s dnr ipo and rf gain control will make results even better.

    I owned the 450 for awhile, I didn't like it. I sold it and bought the 891. IMHO I think the 891 is VASTLY superior to the 450. The RX/TX on the 891 totally kicks the 450's butt up and down the dial. Yes it's more compact and more menu driven, but the DNR on the 891 is great. I can dig out more weak signals with the 891, and I absolutely am "heard" way more on it. I've made way more contacts on the 891. The difference is NO comparison. I can get the HF signals to sound very close to VHF quiet.

      The DNR on the 891 is known. To be very good, and would naturally be better than even the 450 D never mind a regular 450 because of how much knewer it is. I have an 891, and I have had a 450 d. The 891 simply has newer tech. Also, you can adjust the contour settings on the 891 to boost the signal. Change the contour level in the menu to 10. Then, activate the contour and dial it down to 120 instead of the default 300. Boom, Fuller audio that's boosted up over the background.
      Personally, I find the DNR in the 891 to be even a but too heavy, even at lower settings. I use it...it's excellent, but I prefer to use the RF squelch along with the contour most of the time. Oh, and that along with being away from electrical noise out at a state park. 😀

    I don't know what you were mumbling? But the 891 has DSP at RF and Roofing filters and the FT450 has audio dsp only AFAIAA.
    The big problem is how much current the radio draws, even on receive. With the audio turned up it's 1.5A to 2A, which is a lot.
    Also the panoramic display is not 'live' rather like the old 991 (non-A version) which makes me think that the 891 is kinda a cost reduced, smaller 991 with no ATU, VHF or UHF. Still tempted for a compact radio in the car although I think the Xeigo G90S is probably more useful, and has an auto ATU, AND, have a live waterfall.

      Not sure what 891 you're using but mine draws a solid 1ah on rx. Audio level does not make it draw 2ah. Trust me, that info, which I assume you are going off of the Yaesu spec, is completely wrong. The 450's filters are garbage at best, where the 891 is a dream. Both spectrum scopes are novelty on the 991 and 891, which is why I went with the 7300. I'm not a huge Yeasu fan when it comes to their HF rigs, however, since I mainly focus on portable ops the 891 is the best radio out there for that. While I have a g90 and many other hf radios, I would not recommend a g90 for a mobile rig. So what it has a tuner? So many people harp on that and I don't know why. Get a resonant antenna. If you're going to use it mobile you're prob going to be using a couple ham sticks or a tar heel/screw driver type antenna anyway. The g90 has zero filters. No notch, no noise reduction, nothing. The only thing you can do is adjust the bandwidth which isn't very helpful. The g90 is a cool radio with a fancy waterfall, and I do use it a bit, but in all honesty, it is my least favorite radio that I own.

      @@hamradiotube There are two small fans inside. If the radio gets warm, for any reason, internal or external heating, they come one. Also data modes push the radio hard too. Rx circuitry, DSP, USB etc. I don't own one, I just tried one out. I agree with you, the negatives rather outweigh the positives.

    I thought the FT891 was an FT450 crammed into an FT857 case, except FT891 is so much better sounding. The FT891 is comparable to my IC7300 - and in some ways better.

    Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it. I am studying for the Foundation licence in the UK; would you recommend the FT891 as a viable transceiver for someone new to the hobby?
    I love the idea of using HAM Radio Deluxe with this. Is there any way to connect a pan adapter to use the SDR software for waterfall features etc?

      Yes I absolutely would recommend this radio as a first. Unless you care about 2meters and, is it 4 meters you guys have over there? There is a way to connect it to a pan adapter but I'm not entirely sure how. Go check out Johnny's channel Signal Search. He shows a way to do it. Lot of mumbling on the video and not sure what the purpose really was. Unusual as your videos are usually very good and clear. Seemed more like a stream of consciousness narrative.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  4 роки тому

      The purpose was to compare the DNR of the 450 vs the 891, and to show how awesome the 891 is. This was way early in my UA-cam career before external microphones were a thing for me, hence the poor audio. And the fact that I'm mumbling.

      Sorry. It's a little too late now though. What I'm saying isn't really that important. I'm trying (poorly) to show the differences in audio quality and noise reduction of the 2 radios, so hearing the radios over me is really the point of this video. Being that I made this when I was relatively new to making UA-cam videos, I didn't have any good microphones to record. Hopefully my later videos will be more enjoyable for you. Thanks for watching though, I certainly appreciate it. 73

    • How a transceiver A/B comparison becomes more useful?
    • Use on each transceiver, external, equal loudspeaker.
    • Switch each 5 second, between transceiver A and B.
    • Switch fast, between A/B (no gaps)
    • Switch during the same station is talking.
    • Don't talk yourself during the test.
    • Use the same settings on each transceiver (BW, GAIN, FILTER...)
    • Cut out on the video, search stations.
    • Write the mode for this video in the content; SSB; CW....
    • Use the same Antenna.
    • Use an Antenna switch.
    • Maybe you find some more useful settings?
    Best Regards
    Mark

      Thank you for the constructive criticism Martin, and you're welcome for the video. As I've said to other posts on this thread, this was an impromptu comparison when I first got the 891. Very much filled with excitement. I know there are much more scientific ways of showing this (don't even get me started on which microphone could have been the best to record the audio with!) and much of what you suggest, while welcome and encouraged, I simply don't/didn't have all the necessary means to do so. While many have pointed out "don't talk through the whole video" (I watched it after posting and I do agree whole heartedly), the objection was just a quick and simple comparison of the audio, which I believe the iPhone that it was recorded on didn't do the most justice. I would have to disagree with you on the external speaker however. The comparison is between the 2 rigs as they are. Moreover, (that just seems like a big word now) the Yaesu FT-891 has been a splendid radio to take out in the field portable and have many a QSO with. In fact, I have since retired the 450, and use the 891 in the shack as my main HF radio. As far as the more useful settings, I have found that running the 891 full out with only the least amount of DNR has been very sufficient. Lest we think the 450 is a sub par radio I will tell you I have worked New Zealand SSB with my humble 40/20 fan dipole on it. I am truly humbled and grateful for you watching and commenting on my video and appreciate all the feedback I get and hope you will continue to watch my channel. Thanks again and 73.
