I'll admit this. Mitchell Johnson always dished it out and also delivered on the pitch but he always took it well. Credit to Australia. Also genuinely good in the com box
This for me encapsulates why the sporting rivalry between England and Australia is so great. Mitch copped it big time this series and admitted himself that the barmy army did a number on him. He absolutely murdered us three years later. It’s these stories that keep the game alive and vibrant and make a summer of ashes cricket such a pleasure. A fierce rivalry, occasionally a hostile one, but one which for the vast majority of the time is rooted in respect and affection.
"He bowls to the left, he bowls to the riiiiiiight, that Mitchell Johnson, his bowling is sh*te!" Hahaha gotta love the barmy army. You'd think England were at home.
Absolutely. One couldn't ask for a better script as an Englishman. Bill Lowry sounds in tears when he hands the commentary over whilst the English fans are chanting that infamous song. Cleaned bowled comes swiftly for a Golden 🦆 😎
I see this moment here as the catalyst for the summer of Mitch Johnson 3 years later. He got his revenge in the most dominant way, literally breaking apart England’s XI. One of the best comeback stories in sport
@@drahcirnevarc9152 Trott 100% and I'd argue Pietersen too (his behaviour was only worth putting up with when he was on top form) but Swann's elbow was agony to bowl with even after two surgeries to put it right. He only agreed to go because there were no other spinners ready to step up. If he'd been able to bowl 90-100% fit he wouldn't have stepped down.
Perhaps the catalyst was not hearing any home support. Imagine being an Aussie batsman coming out to that welcome in Sydney. Johnson was a rabbit in the headlights here. Any supposed Australian cricket fan should feel ashamed watching this. This was Johnsons hour of need and the Australian cricket support was woefully lacking.
The rivalry was something else, they knew he was a class bowler and he had respect but damn did he love playing against us, getting heavy defeats and he loved every minute of it. Barmy Army never fail to disappoint 🏴

Oh boy. Mitchell Johnson loping in with the lopsided run-up and the handlebar moustache in that series was truly terrifying stuff. Like a hyena smelling blood and closing in on wounded prey (Trott)
Don't poke the bear they say . Mitchell johnson unleashed a tsunami in 2013/14 .one of the scariest fast bowling performances I have ever seen in a series . He put 3/4 english batters to retirement that series
Firstly, only 1 batsman went into retirement, and it wasn't because of Johnson. Secondly, he lived off 1 good series, hardly a world class bowler was he.
Fair to say our fans were enjoying the moment...and why not... extremely rare England winning down under...mitch got his own back though..he turned into an absolute storm on England's next trip🌪️🌪️🌪️

We gave him pelters that day but Mitch certainly had the last laugh. As a Brit I have to say well done mate. Probably one of the best comebacks in sporting history. Great rivalry as always with the Aussies
Love the Ashes, nothing like it, even though we’ve lost the first test I’m still looking forward to the next test, it’s so special, come on England!! But Australia are a bloody good bowling outfit

Perhaps true, but to come out to the crease in your own back yard to that reception should be a source of shame and embarrassment for every Australian cricket fan.
This has to beat the best cricket moment ever. From just before when Haddin was out and the Barmy Army were already in full voice to getting Johnson out the very next ball. I’m here off the back of the drawn 2023 series which has to go down as one of the best ashes ever and a very aggressive yet unlucky England who tried to win every game by simply having a right go at the Aussies while they played more “to not lose”.
Nobody understands English humour. It's there to reduce the opponent to a emotional quivering wreck. The opponent then gives up. It's how the English defeated the Romans, Vikings Norman's, Napoleon, Germans etc. If it came down to a actual fight. We just hired the Scots.
I'll admit this. Mitchell Johnson always dished it out and also delivered on the pitch but he always took it well. Credit to Australia. Also genuinely good in the com box
I've been watching the Australian coverage when I've been able to this series, their ex players are absolutely superb on commentary
On this accasion all Mitchell Johnson could do was hang his head and say nothing
Spot on. A great credit to cricket 🏏
It is humbling how terribly nice the fast bowlers are when they arrive in the comms box and with TMS. I actually like Glen now!!
