I might be the only person who actually likes Sticker Star. Yes obligatory every game before it is better but that's not saying much considering all of its predecessors are at least 9/10s.
I thought it was really neat how it was honestly the last Nintendo game to harken back to the old "obtuse" way of figuring things out. Specific stickers being needed at random places, some hidden in those random door stickers hidden around the place. It really gives nostalgia for the old playground rumors and trying to band together to conquer the game, which is lost on the newer generation that wants everything to be railroaded (and to be fair, that was mostly the way the previous games functioned). Tons of secrets, hidden levels, things off the beaten path, it rewards exploration the most out of any game in the series.
The writing is also still top notch despite lacking all the wacky characters and environments of the predecessors. Yes I miss them but there's also a space in gaming for generic grass world, generic desert, generic snow world... I feel like the game was going for a huge nostalgia trip and it succeeded in that department. It's just not what Paper Mario fans were looking for at the time. The dialogue is still genuinely fun and witty and I don't think it coming from a toad instead of a gnarfgnarf from the gnarflesnarp continent hurts it any. The Snifit segment especially was very fun.
Also the soundtrack is fantastic and honestly maybe the best in the series. It's just so bright and colorful, perfect for the nostalgiac atmosphere it's trying to convey.
Not even nostalgia blind as I played Super Paper Mario and Paper Mario before it. I like all of them, sue me.

I loved this game as a kid and always will. I thought I was the only one lol! This game holds a special place in my heart and the hate is unbearable, this is the FIRST video I have ever seen actually giving the game a try and not saying its the "THIS IS WORST THING EVER MADE!!!!!". Thank you for giving the game a go TheBoredJord!

Paper Mario 64 was my first real video game, and I went on to play basically the entire Mario & Luigi RPG series, Super Paper Mario and, yes, Sticker Star.
I was young enough that most of its shortcomings didn't bother me, though the lackluster battle system was disappointing and the boss fights were very poorly designed. I personally had a lot more fun with Super Paper Mario's minigame hut (and that game overall - I played it several times) than I did with this one, but I did play it through to the final boss at least once. I think I was happy enough to have a version of Paper Mario I could take with me on the go - the fact it was portable helped salvage its reputation a little to me back then.
My chief memory for this game is simply trying to complete the museum - I found every attack sticker in the game *except one*. I don't even remember what I was missing - a big shiny variation of the burnhammer, I think. I just remember replaying level after level searching for a hidden block containing this one missing sticker (this was before playthroughs and internet guides were commonly made and accessible, remember, especially for a tech-illiterate kid to find) and finally deciding it wasn't worth my time. Knowing the rewards for the museum completion, I'm glad I gave up, honestly. And I was smart enough to never even attempt to complete those terrible achievement flags - I think I got 5 in my normal playthrough and didn't bother trying to get the rest.
Sticker Star does have a terrible reputation that is only mostly deserved, in my opinion. If it were released as a standalone title separate from the Paper Mario brand, odds are it would just be a forgettable, bland game rather than a forgettable, bland game that's "responsible for ruining a beloved series." With expectations like that, this game was especially insulting to a lot of people.
Anyways, that's my take on it. It is an okay game that is overhated because it isn't what people wanted from this series. Great video!

Finding all but one stickers pretty impressive for not using any guides. Thank you for sharing your experience with this game, I enjoyed reading it! 😊
(Also happy to see a Bug Fables icon, I had a blast with that game and can't wait to review it in the future! 🐝🪲🦋)

@@TheBoredJord Ah, thanks - I was a pretty persistent gamer when it came to finding secrets and completion. Not sure how long I spent looking for that sticker, but I'm sure it was a while.
I've had this icon for some time but I replayed Bug Fables recently and it's still a great game! It's the "bug Paper Mario," after all. 😅

I hate this game. Absolutely loathe it. It represents everything wrong with the Mario series at the time and has horrible game design to boot. The whole sticker system just isn't fun and it's frustrating to figure out what the game wants from you with the little hints it drops. (Fuck you Kersti, you should've stayed dead.)
However, I do agree it is over hated. It's a horrible game, but at least it's functional and its music and visual style is wonderful. It's not like this gameplay format CAN'T work because I consider Color Splash to be the game Sticker Star was trying to be. Sticker Star feels like a result of growing pains of a series trying to evolve and it unfortunately fails in too many areas to save it from its reputation. It did too much damage to the point where this format never got a fighting chance, even when it was done right.
Although honestly, I'm glad Intelligent Systems is going back to the old formula and remaking Thousand-Year Door. Despite how much the series tried to evolve, it just never hit the same heights of the old games. Going back to what worked and what people loved most is what the series needs right now.

I have to disagree with you on the visual design being “good”. You had comparison shots between SS and TTYD, and SS is so… flat. No pun intended. I swear every level is just a bunch of boxes stacked on top of each other. In the shot of the jungle area in TTYD there are branches and vines and multiple types of trees swirling between the foreground and background. Then the SS is literally an empty boxy hallway devoid of personality and detail.

There is a lot of character in the levels, have you even played the game? The town? The harbor? The fortress? The desert tower? The sand tornado? Wigglers tree house? Sniffit or whiffit? The spider hole? The shipwreck? The ski lift? The giant ice bowser? The ruins? The volcano? The airship? The castle? THE AMAZINGLY DESIGNED MANSION?!! They are all full of life and you need to stop being a sheep and becoming a part of the unfair mass hate for this game.

If you want to play a better version of this game, try Color Splash. It's far less frustrating and it feels like it's what this game was trying to be.
