PSA to anyone who doesn’t know - I believe Baby led weaning isn’t supposed to start until minimum 6 months.
Some people introduce purées or “solids” as young as 4 months but that’s not really recommended either. 6 months is usually when you should consider starting.

i loved anything you could make into a french fry or wedge shape, like you said - something they can grab with their whole fist and gnaw on. and yeah - *steam stuff or make sure it's squishable*. my oldest kid's first food ever was a broccoli tree (floret and stalk).
other early foods she tried were "french fries/wedges" of shredded chicken, mango, banana, apple, carrot, pickle, egg cut into strips. also gave her jar tops (like the kind you get with spaghetti sauce) with applesauce, smooshed sweet potatoes, or yogurt in them to eat with a baby spoon. like bitty plates. enough for her to eventually get some into her mouth but not enough to make a huge mess.
and my favorite phrase - "food before one is just for fun." i would imagine that all the food i was putting in front of her was eventually going to go into the trash. then hell, anything she actually ate was cool. less stress about amounts.
the best gagging advice i got - look at their eyes. if they're looking mostly bored and there's noise, it's gagging. if their eyes get big and there's no noise, they're likely choking.

Shayla, I swear... you amaze me! My kids are all in their 20's, so I am done with babies for now. I WISH I had a mommy like you to learn from. I love your approach. When I was raising my babies there was NOTHING to explore other than what a friend or cousin recommended. (Not that I followed them as a LAW) Your way of sharing is both inspiring and a lot of common sense! It's beautiful and helpful on every level! I truly believe you have wisdom that could and will help any mommy who is watching.

Just very clearly explaining what to look for when your baby is ready. Lots of content on Instagram for free and it does really well to include food from other cultures.

I have never appreciated or related to a video so deeply. I have a 7 month old and we’ve done purées since about 4.5 months. She’s showing some interest in food and we did try the BLW “oh here’s an avocado. *takes a massive bite* nope. Never mind. Not doing that.” So now we’re at the introducing her to food a little at a time and she’s loved everything. She does gag a little, but it has become less and less common. Also the squishing food between my fingers. Totally relate to that. I’ve resolved to really take it slow despite how excited I am to be able to eventually just give her food off my plate. This video makes me feel so much better about that decision.

We exclusivly breast fed until 6mos. The day she turned 6 mos I just gave her some boiled carrot sticks and made sure they were soft enough. We picked a new food every 3 days. Daycare was confused that we didn't do purees, so I had to send what I wanted her to eat. I don't know why we were so chill about it, but everything I looked into said she would gag, so when she gaged I figured we were doing it right?

My biggest problem now is having a 4-year-old leaving little bits of things everywhere and constantly picking up after her so there's not choking hazards on the floor for baby. My baby is 1yo and he just doesn’t like finger foods that much. He smushes it and it’s so difficult because I want him to eat table food like us but it just doesn’t work! He gags on literally everything and even though he’s always had rusk and puffs which he chows down - but the rest he just chokes on the rest! He prefers purées and I really don’t know what else to do… any advice? First baby here.

    • @heyshayla
      @heyshayla  2 роки тому

He’s not ready! No problem, let him have the purées, give him things that get soft like purée like raspberries, or soft avocado. But don’t stress, if he’s not ready just give him more time :)
I was so worried when aj wasn’t ready at 6 months and she’s a fantastic eater.
Unless your dr is concerned just take it slow, you’ve got this!

@@heyshayla thank you for your response, I know this is what I needed to hear. I will mention it to my doctor because I’d like him to make sure there’s no physiological issue (which I doubt). By the way, my son LOVES food. He has a whole plate of thickly puréed veggie soup and loves vegetables. My son however was not interested/ready at 6 months either. I feel he just prefers the simplicity of eating or swallowing purées - which is fine I mean he is only a baby still!
There’s just so much pressure for a baby so small to be holding a piece of chicken drumstick and eating it with all of its complexities - the risk of choking is too high for me. I’m just going to continue introducing finger foods (some of which he is very good at) here and there as snacks, for example squishy veg and manageable fruits and when he is ready I’ll do the full transition. No need to force it, because it just makes it hard for him. It’s always the external pressure making us mothers uncomfortable! I literally couldn’t agree more with your video - translated my feelings ❤️
To anyone experiencing the same, my son loves his milk even in conjunction with lots of food - which I will not take away from him (rather I have reduced to 4 bottles or so in 24 hours) it’s fine, go at your own child’s rhythm.

My daughter is allergic to dairy, soya, eggs, oat and coconut through my breastmilk, not gonna lie its kind of ruined the fun of weaning and I'm constantly assessing every poop and rash. I get the partner being more stressed too, my husband drives me mad, I have to feed her now when he's not home because he's constantly pulling food away from her or interrupting her when she's doing perfectly fine 😂 Today she had toast sticks with banana, gagged then vomited all over her tray and went straight back at it. I admit I find your fear somewhat surprising. I have a sister 10 years younger and I was an au pair at 22 for a family with an infant in Switzerland and so on. Which means I‘ve been exposed to the process of feeding babies for just about forever. I‘ve had lots of gagging babies, but never had to do the heimlich. I have had go do a finger swipe through the mouth to pull something out, but that was more with toddlers chewing something into a long string. I had a 9 month old as soon as we introduced finger foods completely refuse to be spoon feed. She wanted to do it all herself and baking whole squashes in the oven till soft was so easy. We made our own baby food for the most part. An immersion blender works great for this, especially if you want pureed with more texture to them. I also love the bibs that cover the arms for clean up. Good luck with this!

  • @kelliehoyt7579
