I’m black and I found that shit funny back then and even more hilarious NOW!!! 😂😂😂 Typical Suzanne shallowness...she wasn’t racist, just silly as hell and ignorant.
Phenomenal acting! The emotions brought out when Jean smart sees her cousin’s face. It broke my heart to see her reaction when she over heard the abuse. I’m in tears writing this! Lol
In reference to the Suzanne's brown makeover, when Julia found out she told Suzanne she didn't give a damn if she was the color of a California Raisin, she wasn't having Suzanne trying to look like Diana Ross. Hence Julia's expression when Suzanne comes on stage. I saw the original episode and I laughed so hard, I could barely catch my breath🤣
As an older black male, some blackface skits and photos, in my opinion, have truly been meant to discredit and totally mock our darker skin tones in an utterly wicked and racist fashion. Blackface is usually accompanied by jive talking/poor English, dreads, afro, a 40 oz bottle and somewhere in the photo/video will lie a slice of watermelon or a piece of fried chicken. That's the blackface that's always angered me! What Delta Burke's character, Suzanne, did was tasteful and not meant to hurt others. In fact, she looked like a rather cute baby doll on that stage. I was not offended in any way.
So true....True..... though I am not a Black American I am native American, as long as the character in whatever show or skit is not derogatory or belittling I believe it can be in good taste and clean fun. The 80s were the bomb. People could have fun without hurting one another. How I miss those days
No it’s offensive. It’s not funny at all. White ppl stay making a mockery of us even if it’s meant to be a “joke” our skin color and our race is not a joke in any way, shape, or form. I see this comment is 2 years old..:.i hope you’ve come to realize where ur wrong
@@arimackin You've obviously never seen this episode. The other women tell Suzanne that black face is offensive and should absolutely not be done. The joke isn't blackface, it's that Suzanne is stupid. I also find it interesting that you get to decide what all other people of color get to think.
i'm black and it is hilarious! Suzanne was so self-absorbed and insensitive but funny. That's how some people are. and it is a laughable moment. I think funny is funny.
The waynes brothers went white face and nobody had a tantrum and this isnt offensive either. Its nit me t to be racist. There isnt any mockery. So in cases like this isn't one who is offended is choosing to be offended
Thank you for commenting. It's hard for a white person to declare a blackface scene as not offensive, I'm not the one potentially being insulted. But this was funny. White Girls was hilarious too. Still can't hear A Thousand Miles (I had to look it up, ain't this white girl's theme song lol) without cracking up. Pure comedy gold
Suzanne is one of the few who could do this and get away with it. She meant no harm she truly believed this was the only way to do it. This made sense to her and we understood.🤣🤣 As a FAN and STRONG, PROUD, BLACK WOMEN I approve!🥰🥰🥰
Suzanne was never one to be PC but she didn't care because she didn't see it the way others did. Call it naive or whatever but when it came down to it, Anthony was one of her best friends whom she confided in more than Charlene, Mary Jo or even Julia. But if I had to choose a friend it would be Suzanne because she never hid her feelings so what you see is what you got.
CBS needs a night where they can bring back these classic NON POLITICALLY CORRECT EPISODES where America can truly LOL. We need this in these uncertain times.
One of my favorite episodes. Loved these ladies and sweet Anthony. Suzanne was always my favorite. In this episode Suzanne was nothing but authentic. She never did anything half way. I adored her and Anthony friendship. He was her best friend. She could always count on him to be honest, authentic and real with her. On and off the stage. God bless
Yes, Annie Potts was definitely feeling it! I've often wondered how many Diana Ross (and The Supremes) clips she had to watch to get that scene just right! The way she worked her eyes, mouth and that pose with the arms stretched at the end/freeze frame wasn't something she pulled out of her own hat. To everyone that felt the need to address that the song was from Diana's solo career...we know that! In order to include all the actresses and to make that one helluva scene, they had to improvise a little.
I agree. I am black and I was hardly offended. It was Suzanne's obliviousness that made it so funny. That and Dixie's reaction. Man I miss Dixie Carter. She was the epitome of a lady of class and decorum!
Suzanne’s sheer cluelessness was comical yet again. If Julia hadn’t been outraged and MaryJo and Charlene hadn’t looked dumbfounded and tried to educate her, then it would have been a turn-off. And handled wrong! Suzanne’s outrageousness was always good for a belly laugh. God Bless Linda Bloodworth for handling things just right. And for a talented cast.
@@smallworldafterall09 She was not clueless. She was a Supreme. They were clueless. She did not come out eating watermelon, wearing plaits/a rag on her head while her mouth was outlined in an unatural way. All she did was perform. Someone needs to educate you about racism/blackface and stereotypes.
@@donaldchump4327 yeah it's the irony of suzanne that makes this work. When she initially said she was getting darker makeup, of course Julia was livid and told her "you can't go on stage wearing blackface" Suzanne said "well if Dustin Hoffman was gonna play Martin Luther King, you don't think they would put makeup on him?" and Julia said "Suzanne that role would never go to Dustin Hoffman, it would go to a black actor" then a dramatic pause and Suzanne said "well I think THAT'S racist" it did more to educate people on the absurdity of wearing blackface in the first place.
I loved this episode. Charlene's friend finally decided to leave her abusive husband. I remember them talking about "the rowdy girls" and how familiarity can be confused for love. I really needed to hear that at the time. It was so poignant and a perfect foil to the ridiculousness of Suzanne. I don't remember one bit of fallout from this. Never happen today. I bet we can't even watch the full episode.

@@breathlesshaste it’s really weird. I know golden girls is on a whole different level of popularity than this show but it’s still there and semi popular.
Actually, it's 2022 and they just showed that black face episode on Golden Girls. And it wasn't racist, it was a mud treatment that Blanche and Rose was trying out right when Michael Dorothy's son was engaged to an older black lady in this episode. And the lady's mom and aunts were there to talk them out of the engagement. This was a funny episode and was also educational in accepting others regardless of color or age.
End of 2021... Blackface doesn't always mean racism... Some times it is a tribute to great people... ❤ I'm a gay man. Seeing people portray gays doesn't always offend me... It is the HATE that is awful, not the admiration.
This show focused on serious issues. This is a great example. My gosh!! How I remember all the episodes of Designing Women. And I remember seeing this one, and laughed so hard at Susanne for playing her part. Ooooh!! There's no way a white person could do that nowadays. It would be racist.
How is it more offensive to change your skin color than it is to change your hair color? I'll tell you: because we're taught to be offended. "Blackface" is completely different from what Suzanne has done here. With blackface, the person uses BLACK makeup with white lipstick and engages in stereotypical behavior in an attempt to be funny. I would think it would be more offensive to see a group of white women in black wigs pretending to be black than a white woman who took the extra effort to darken her skin to look more like the part she was playing. If that's offensive, then why aren't the wigs offensive? People need to learn to think for themselves and stop letting divisive political pundits tell them what to think.
