I got the rings and I really enjoy what they do for my technique. The rings are super cheap for what they give you. My action is so smooth and buttery now!
The trick is to not take the concept of "ring techniques" literally. You are not trying to do "techniques" with the rings. They are just there to teach you what a real mechanically accurate circle is, and the kind of leverage, speed, and power that gives you.
So don't get caught up in the minutia. Just do the exercises in all the planes of motion and cycle thru them.

    I use it for:
    *conditioning arms,
*strengthening arms (this also prevents someone trapping your arms)
*from a relaxed state exploding with fast blocks, where particular muscles are worked out (also for muscle memory so to speak) at particular height and angles.
The energy for resistance of particular blocks should be outward. The ring does help with that. How outward? Well the rest of your training has to kick in for that. Strong core plays a role, but mostly vision reflexes, that is, going from one block to another one asap!
Though I get what your saying, overall I think it's a good tool, we just need what it does as we use it, so we can amplify good effects and diminish bad ones.

I can see your point but still, for me, I think its a good tool especially for people who doesn't have a partner for doing Chi Sao. If its about the force going to the sides, I think its good for experiencing a little bit of force in blocking. I haven't bought it yet but I'm planning to. I've been practicing only 1 form which is Sil Lim Tao for many years now and my body reacts on its own already like when someone is going to touch me or even like attempting to tickle me, my arms goes on the defensive automatically. I think this ring will help me see more or feel more towards the centerline. Targeting is really not an issue in this ring coz in real fights, you will really see your target and its better to be on the defensive side and at the same time attack immediately.

The rattan ring isn't for all martial artists who doesn't find it useful for practice & it's OK 👌!! However, those who possess martial perception sees how beneficial the Rings are as far as " 1 🤚washing the other ✋" is concerned & understands the connection of Chi Sao drills

I bought one of those before I watched this video. I'm very Interested in wing chun but do not know much. I do not have butterfly swords, dummy or partner but I do own a bamboo bo staff. 😮‍💨😫

The ring is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen. Who invented this? Did Ip Man ever use this?

When used properly, I find it very useful. It does strengthen the
blocking techniques, and gives you that Wing Chun "Feel."
Keeping your "Centerline" is also valuable. I like the ring.

So essentially, your saying for beginners or somebody in training, the ring is useless??!! But it been used in wing chun for 1,000 of years!? 😂 I see your point but at the same time. It was invented to enhcance the technique for endurance, speed, angles, confined space, power, awareness........ In my opinion its definitely worth training with!

The ring is a poor substitute for a dummy. You're better off buying a 3 legged table and nailing that to a wall to simulate the three dummy hands minus the leg. Or save up and get a good dummy.

i gotta call this one as i see it. Its ok to say why we may not use the ring in our school. However, you can't leave it with no information at all.
You have to explain both its function, and *what* it develops. Its intellectually lazy to say it develops the wrong thing, without knowing what it develops at all.
It has its own form. It also has a metric fuck ton of its own drills. It takes place in the classical curriculum between the two weapon sets. Along with a vast array of other wing chun weapons before ip mans era: the dart, the tri-pole, the spear, etc. Those all of which have their own form and curriculum.
That it doesn't develop targeting, would only be said by someone who doesn't know the curriculum of it. Id argue all kinds of wing chun drills don't teach targeting, they develop other attributes. In so far as just what you need, imo, the wall bag is far more important then the weapons and dummy, if we take them in progressively in time line. Some students of HKM did walk away with the rings training.
