I will say this after I have read a lot of the comments below. A lot of you are saying how back combing is an old fashioned style. I am 68 years old and I have fine and thinning hair and this style is about the only way that I can make it look like I have some hair. So to say this technique is outdated is incorrect, some of us have to do to have a nice hair style unless you call flat a good look. I also want to say what a good job the hairdresser did on the video. I was never raised with , doing our hair, doing makeup, dressing up, etc. we never had that option. I find it refreshing that someone would show us for free how to style our hair. Thank you ma'am

Oh Bonnie, you are so right! I'm 70 and can remember what we tried way back when to get our hair to look "groovy". Grandma doesn't have to look frumpy anymore, thanks to the easy steps in these free "how to" videos.

I don’t know why so many people are critical of this haircut and style, I think this woman has talent! She could’ve left it at any stage and styled it anyway she wanted, this is just one of what I guess it’s a large repertoire of her haircuts. And I think she demonstrated her point quite well. In the end there’s nothing wrong with her styling techniques. Excellant work. I do think this is practical to do at home as the cut is right and you are willing to learn what the hairdresser teaches you.

Geordo1960 Well, probably she thought thats what women would want, or what they wear in her neighborhood. Some ppl never do change their style. From the comments it appears we set her straight. Don't beauticians have to do continuing education credits to keep/renew their licenses?

I am a Grandma and proud to be one. Robin's comment that it was "rude" made me smile. I was thrilled to have ANY kind of hair style for women over 70 on youtube. I can't wait to try this style. Thanks for sharing it - both of you. Your model is beautiful!

There is a much easier way to do this. Keep your round brush out from the scalp a bit and dry it with the hair "lifted " at the roots to add a little volume, then just put a little bit of styling wax on your fingertips, run your hands through your hair a few times and you're done. No teasing, no yanking at your hair. Unless you have very fine hair, it looks great.

Wow! I love the haircut and styling, although I could never do it myself and get that effect... and if I thought my nearly totally gray hair would turn out to be such a beautiful silvery gray, I'd let my hair color grow out in a heartbeat!

Loving my short hair.Really rocking my earrings now. 😀 The short layers give it the bump with a little mousse and light teasing (ratting). Thanks for the video share. I'm more of a salt and pepper gray, but strangers love it and it's almost annoying, the amount of people telling me I look so much younger. lol 😉

I think that looks amazing. Much better than the old permed style older women used to wear. One thing I would add is a little bit of length so you could flick the bottom up and it ads some energy and uplift to a woman's face. Very nice though.

  • @silverforever6254

Grandma Hairstyle? Just wee bit patronizing/condescending. Not everyone is a grandma...and there are loads of very, very young people making their hair silver/ grey...also, you could cover up the "pink scalp" that most people get when their hair turns silver by using a blending powder that you can just brush into specific areas on the scalp that will also add depth, volume and some thickness in the roots of those areas. I use Joan River's "Great Hairday" in Charcoal/Grey that is safe and works beautifully. Other than that...the hairstyle can be worn by anyone of any age...although on fine hair you could sweep one layer of the bangs up and over to the side and fan out them out to give the top more volume...I think the bangs could've been a little less prominent. Also, "teasing" hair sounds less scary than "ratting" it.

Tooooo much work! Ratted hair was great on teens in early 1960's. I have a stacked short bob.... sooo easy! This makes her look old and that white hair too! I am 65 in 3 months. My hair has been always brown, now gold highlights to cover grey. People say I look 50! But if she likes it and can manage it... God bless!

My hair is that color & when I don't dye it ,it puts at least 10 years on me. I hate it.I color it a pretty blonde color.Everyone really likes it. I also don't wear old lady hairstyles. Also, when it's not dyed it has a wirery texture. When it's dyed,it's nice & soft.

I agree about color. I have fine thin hair and have colored it all my life to get more body. I'm 71 and would love to have the genes that so many of girls my have. Mine will never get that beautiful natural color. My sweet hair stylist does almost the same process to my hair. And let me tell you that back comb look will only last until the next day. BUT, the body and overall style will last for 3-4 days. Love it.

Some don't care for the style where it looks like they just stepped out of a bad windstorm. They would prefer the soft, neatly kept looked. Usually when someone walks into a salon, the stylist will ask what type of haircut and style the person is wanting before it's done. Everyone has their own preference and what makes them feel comfortable and happy. If a woman was in her 30's or 40's and had this cut then I don't think anyone would be making a big deal of it. If she let her hair grown down to her butt and had the stylist use a flat iron on it then others would be making a comment about it not looking good because they would say she is too mature for that style. Either way someone is going to make a negative comment. As long a the person getting, paying, and wearing the cut or style is happy then the stylist has done his or her job. ;-)

good golly, she never said that Grandma's can't style like anyone else. but instead is showing how to create a style so that the model looks great without trying too hard not to look her age.. Some women with a few years of experience have unique hair problems [ sometimes due to hormone reduction] ..color issues, thinning, limp hair to name just a few.. so nice to get tips on style... perhaps you need to get over your overly sensitive self & see that she was trying to be helpful not insulting.........

Too much teasing. No one teases their hair that much unless you are a senior.

I always felt teasing was very unhealthy for hair, seems like it tears the hair to shreds. I grew up in the teasing era, but never liked it. As for now, I've told my friends they'll never see me in the standard grandma hairdo, short, with tight curls, dyed blue. Too predictable, everybody does it once they get a certain age. Just like older men go to their barber every single week, even though there's nothing to cut!

That was great! I am getting up there in age, although I don't look a day over 45. I am hoping that a short hairstyle like this will look good when I am ready to chop it all off.

All that hairspray would burn your hair. How about just some mousse or gel?

Patrick Coco My friend uses a ton of hairspray until her hair looks frozen. It seems to be ok.

I grew up in the sixties and it was always ratting your hair with a rattail comb. Seems each generation has different words for the same thing. :-)
