I met Olajuwon once. This was around ‘88 or ‘89. We were in the same doctor‘s office. I was about to leave while he was coming in. He was having his knee checked out, and I was on crutches having a torn ligament in my ankle looked at. I looked at him and calmly said, “Hello Hakeem”, and he looked at me with a big smile and said, “Unbeatable!” We both laughed, and he went to see the doctor while I left. That’s it. Hakeem was extremely down to earth and friendly.
I met him at an autograph signing event. I got a picture with him. My mom was a big Rockets fan and photobomb the picture. LoL. I told "Akeem" he was my favorite player. He was so nice and humble and great with all us kids.
No other player like him in history. Not just a complete all around player with total domination on both sides of the court, but the man was grace incarnate. Delicate, crafty, flexible in body and mind and unsurpassed energy level. And all that with a warm, shy smile.
The interview was so much classier than todays, and Hakeem was insanely well spoken, probably unintentionally from English not being his first language but he said everything as simply as possible
At the time I worked for an American multinational and was for business in Houston. Being European and not familiar with basketball I got an invitation from a colleague to watch the match that evening. At the end one of the players got a standing ovation and I learned later this guy scored a quadruple double, apparently the second time in NBA history. Sometimes you get a lucky break.
