  • Not the typical filament rack - yes, it's modular!
    Hi there fellow tinkers!
    Today we’re going to solve one big problem I have with storage, especially when it comes to 3D printing filament.
    You might have it all sorted out, and in that case I’m happy for you, but if you’re like me and you have filament spools laying all around your house, you’ve came to the right place, as I think I have a solution that will transform the way you think about filament storage.
    Let's build together a modular design that solves this problem, based on the 20mm aluminium extrusion by open beam. Yes, there is some hardware required, but for the greater good.

      @@GizmoTheGreen That's correct! That's why I only opted for the 25cm cantilever ones, as those were roughly 10$ both, pre cut to length, the wall hanger was printed

    "Never build something you can easily buy online"... except when it costs 3 times as much. I priced out just the extrusion and the beam for a single row and it would be around $50 and that's not including the screws and heat set inserts.
    I currently use a 100% 3D printed modular rack and have used probably around 4 spools of filament to get 4 rows of spool storage (48 spools). I can easily expand horizontally or vertically for around 800g per 12 spools of storage space. With this rack it's rock solid at 4 layers and could probably do 5 or maybe even 6, but can expand horizontally basically infinitely or until you run out of wall space. I reckon I've used roughly $80 worth of filament to get essentially 4 times the storage that I would get for ~$60 using this method.
    There may be some limitations, but for my purposes where I'm just storing filament it has so far served me well. Actually I'm about out of space so planning on expanding again soon.

      Hmm for me the 25cm 2040 extrusions were 5$ each, but they might be cheaper in this part of the world, not sure. Technically 10$ for each 20kg of filament, then adding the fastners and heat inserts it should be roughly 30$ per 20kg of holding capacity. True, 100% printed would be much cheaper, but it won't fit my future needs for sure, as I would like to add more layers with different uses while still keeping the entire rack looking cohesive :)

      What solution is it? I have been searching for something cost effective.

    • @donnyriggz
      @donnyriggz 3 місяці тому

      @mattsmith4993 It's called Modular Filament Spool Rack by TeeMuumi on Printables. I did add another row for a total of 60 spools stored since my original comment and it's still holding up pretty well. I probably wouldn't go any higher than this (5 rows of spool high) so any future expansion will have to be horizontal.

    Theo...I'm in the process of building your filament storage system, which I'm really excited about, but I have a couple of questions. 1) What screw were you anticipating to use to attach the "WALL_MOUNT_MID" to the "WALL_HANGER"? I was expecting to use the same brass heat inserts and M5x40mm screws that are used for the "WALL_MOUNT" units but the holes are smaller than the ones on the WALL_MOUNT and the M5x40mm screws are too long. Yes, I know I can use smaller screws but I was just wanting to understand what your thoughts were when you designed the "WALL_MOUNR_MID" and how you envisioned attaching them. 2) Why doesn't the "WALL_MOUNT_MID" extend to support both rods? Do you have a model that does this? If not, would you share your "WALL_MOUNT_MID" f3d file so I can modify it? Thank you for this awesome idea, I really like that your system includes the OpenBuild V-Slot rails.

    If you flip those brackets it would be much stronger because in the force is being put down on the triangular bracket instead of being pulled away from it. Especially with the 3D printed part that may split at a layer line

    • @tinkertv
      @tinkertv  4 місяці тому +2

      That’s true! I chose the orientation of the parts in such way it won’t split at layer lines. But yes, having it inverted would be stronger, but I didn’t like the looks of it that way 😅

      @EDC3DP 4 місяці тому +1

      @@tinkertv i mean its not holding that much weight so either way would be fine, so better to do it the way you like looking at it 100%!!

    Nice But the Metal 20 mm & 40 mm Extrusions and rods are way too expensive in the UK due to VAT added to the already higher cost after the virus time all costs are 6 times or more because of the after changes in prices! Very big problem all round really! So I would have to see if I can print a different design which uses all 3D printer done parts. Just one of those things?
    I was thinking of designing some filament storage myself anyway since I have about 5 times more filament than you have there! And 4 printers to layout in a room for them I be building inside another bigger room so it has sound proofing and fire protection. and maybe my resin printer be used there too? I hoping to design a unit to have a HEPA filter and Carbon filter inside a box which can be unbolted to replace the filters the box has a inlet tube in the inner room and a outlet in the bigger room that small room is in. so the flumes can be sorted.

    I'd be curious to hear if you looked at the RepRack system and if you did, what made you choose to design an alternative.

    • @tinkertv
      @tinkertv  4 місяці тому

      I’ve seen it, yes, but it seemed to be quite flimsy. Also I did not like the aesthetics of it and wanted to have a way to secure more things to the system with v-slot nuts. That one is very effective for filament but not more I would say
