- Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, is a late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. It was hosted by Jools Holland and David Sanborn, and featured Marcus Miller as musical director. Guests included acts such as Sonny Rollins, Shinehead, Sister Carol, Sonic Youth, Joe Sample, Slim Gaillard, Pere Ubu, Pharoah Sanders, and many others. In addition, vintage clips of jazz legends like Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, and Billie Holiday were also featured. The show also featured a house band of Omar Hakim (drums), Marcus Miller (bass), Philippe Saisse (keys), David Sanborn (sax), Hiram Bullock (guitar), and Jools Holland (piano). The show often allowed its guests ample time to explain the origins of their sound, meaning of songs, etc. It also provided a national audience for lesser known acts (like Arto Lindsay's band The Ambitious Lovers). Hal Willner was the music coordinator, responsible for the interesting musical mix-and-matching that took place on the show.
here for FAGEN!!!!
saved the best for last, fr this whole set is so cool. Thank you youtube for this recommendation
Marcus Miller, Omar Hakim, David Sanborn, Hiram Bullock and Philippe Saisse had been (and will ALWAYS BE) the best house band I've EVER heard!!! Absolutely LOVE these guys!!!!
Simply a reflection of the AMAZING music of that time!!
I can't belive It ✌️
The are top studio sessions musician
The best music show ever!. Thank you Mr. David Sanborn for your vision and direction.
RIP David Sanborn.......
#JoeSample we miss you! I'll always be #SpellBound by your musical talents!
“Spellbound” was one of his GREATEST albums.
And his piano solo in Al Jarreau' s " Spain " live in 1990 ...super
That performance of IGY had me coming out of my seat.
Dude! Absolute Goose Bumps!
Utterly Joyous!
Just listening to Joe Sample's Spellbound made me feel 35 years younger. Made me get ready for that dreaded Monday in a good mood. Thank you for letting me feel your music and vision, Mr. Joseph Leslie Sample. May you truly rest with the ancestors. 🎹🎹☺️☺️🌹🌹🌹🌹
THE GREATEST COLLECTION OF JAZZ MUSICIANS THAT ONE TV PROGRAM WILL EVER PRODUCE....EVER.
Night Music excellent document of the greats of music.
Why can't we have shows like this today whywhywhyyyy
Producers, cross marketing, demographics, and overthinking!!
because people prefer pretentious shows which show plastic performers with no musical talents whatsoever such as that ghastly x factor hosted by the equally ghastly simon cowell sad !
Because people like shiitake.
The sponsors pulled out.
Please, please, please remaster these recordings! This show was a treasure, complete unique and there are things here that deserve to be archived with some refinement. RIP Hal Wilmer, who passed a few years ago, but is a person deserving of wider recognition, who was the musical coordinator of this show.
'memba watching this show as a teenager and being super inspired musically. So sad to hear about David's passing... getting old sucks.
REST IN PEACE, JOE SAMPLE. ANOTHER GREAT PIANIST LIKE GEORGE DUKE.....GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN!!!! YOUR LEGACY WILL LIVE ON...........!
Well said .. Also RIP Hiram Bullock who also was a real good Guitarist who's a member of this faboulous Quintet.
Yes,he really was! Please check out the new prodigy pianist Joey Alexander. At the age of 7, he started to play the piano. The cat is really good. He up for 2 Grammys this year at the age of 12yrs. No one did not teach him how to play, he learned listening his dad's records...Monk, Basie, Ellington. There's a 60 MINUTES episode on him. Check him out!
And RIP Hiram Bullock, the regular guitarist in this band with Marcus Miller on bass - wow! The twist here is that they got Brit Jools Holland - great musician and musical historian now has a similar show on UK (last 20 years).
Completely new dimension for I.G.Y. ! Wow! Patti gets it and flies with it. Just wonderful. A new way of looking at a nice DF tune!
Unreal! Can’t believe I found this
One of the greatest musical shows ever. Not a single mistake, except this one. Donald Fagen who hated to play live, and then just forced to play one of the greatest compositions ever. Sitting there silent, behind a DX-7. The humans will never learn.
milesdust wow couldn’t have written that better , what a shame
The Best Musicians in history.
❤
Joe Sample was so brilliant it makes me want to cry.
Fun having Joe Sample and Donald Fagan in your house band
Once in a lifetime for those who understand
That was rare. I know a decade before Sample did a guest spot on a Steely Dan song on the Aka album.
FANTASTIC MUSIC ON THIS EDITION OF THE SHOW
Cutting I.G.Y. before it ends, when performed by such a bunch of people, should be considered a capital sin :-)
Yeah, they should have cut that bullshit with Jools Holland trying to figure out what it means to be cool. There are cool Brits (Georgie Fame is a good example), but Jools Holland ain't one of them.
I agree.
For real!
This performance of IGY is magical
Sax legend David Sanborn ... thickest head of hair on the planet!
🎷🎷🎷🎷 finest sax player on the planet.
I used to watch this show in the late 80's. Always great artists and my favorite musicians in the house band... Marcus Miller, Omar Hakim, Hiram Bullock and Philipe Saise.
Hiram
@@charleswinokoor6023 Happy??
Why aren't there any DVD or Blu-ray versions of this? Thank you for uploading these videos. Absolutely Awesome Show!! Sadly, i would have been in bed when these aired, having to wak up for highschool the next morning. In retrospect, I should have stayed up! lol
Omar Hakim - Great drummer!
Patti nailed it on IGY!
Good sound.
Marcus Miller (b)
Hiram Bullock (g)
Omar Hakim (ds)
Joe Sample, Donald Fagen, Philipe Saise (keys)
This was 45:50 of pure musical joy .This was when it was worth watching TV on a late sunday night . This show always showcased an eclectic cross section of artists and bands of every genre and idiom in music. It's a shame that shows like this aren't still on TV but thanks for posting this rare gem .UA-cam will keep the legacy of these great shows alive for many generations to come and enjoy of a once glorious time in TV.
Joe Sample rest in peace. Rod Barris
That Spellbound CD was great! Joe Sample great artist crusader! RIP
LEGEND!!!!
Wow, I had forgotten about this amazing show. Glad I stumbled across it. What a lineup 😊
I'm so grateful for the Night Music TV show. The level of musical talent it showcased during its short two year run is unparalleled for its time period. RIP to Joe Sample and Hiriam Bullock
One of the greatest collection of jazz performers ever.
First time watching this. I never got to see Joe Sample live, his improv and tones in any of his live work is astounding - I love what he added to Earl Klugh's Dr. Macumba. And Earl on acoustic guitar is massive in making such an instrument stand out
Joe is truly the 🐐🐐🐐🐐
This video is becoming more and more priceless as the opportunity to see bands of this calibre and originality in their field disappears. You really can't beat Omar Hakim, Marcus Miller and Hiram Bullock as a rhythm section and Phillipe Saisse is a highly underappreciated musician (and all the others too). Great to have a legendary host in David Sanborn who regularly hired those guys on his most successful early albums. Jools Holland is a strange fruit and a musical minnow compared to these guys, but to his credit he promotes a vast spectrum of music and gives new talent a chance on mainstream TV which doesn't exist elsewhere. Thanks for uploading and sharing, many good comments posted already, I watched this upload years ago, not sure why I didn't thank the poster then.
When the world turns blue the song lives on with the great unforgettable Joe Sample :)
I remember my old days. I watched this on TV in Japan. So I could listen to a lot of good music. Thanks.
The best music Showcase ever presented on American Television, period. David Sanborn, Marcus Miller, Hiram Bullock, Omar Hakim, Earl Klugh, Joe Sample: Incredible visionaries and amazing contributions to the advancement of the MUSIC art form.
How well I remember this series!!!!!
Sanborn always sounded so freaking good with every guess on this show.
Sanborn & Sample always were at the jazz crossroads. There was an audio recording of Joe Sample choosing his own All Star Band. Sanborn was on top of his list.
Omar Hakim on drums!
I want the full IGY version. Such a joy to hear this. :-)
OMG!!! Earl and Joe amazing!!!!!
I stumbled across this show by accident. Where has this hidden gem been? I was clearly a child when this came out. I get late night TV vibes.
I miss everything about this program: the host, the format, the content, the talent, and most of all, the timeslot-it was the perfect nightcap on a Sunday night. I first heard of Earl Klugh by recommendation of one of the most beautiful girls I ever met while at Northern Ill. University (Maria Garcia!). I'd already been greatly familiar with George Benson, and it just so happened the two recorded and toured with their "Collaboration" album, coming just off of Klugh's fabulous "Wishful Thinking" album. Both are faves of mine to this day. I saw them on this tour at Chicago's Arie Crown Theater, and I've never looked back. Klugh is just a fabulous, unassuming talent to listen to. His pairing with Benson, a natural one. In no time I was familiar with others in that category of music, including Joe Sample, Bob James, Dav Kos, among others-I was already a huge David Sanborn fan. These are two great performances and songs by both Klugh and Sample.
Earl klugh genius
Watching Night Music was a perfect way to end the weekend. The show aired on late Sunday night early Monday morning at around 12:15AM on locally WNBC Channel 4. It helped me relax for the most dreaded day of the week. Night Music was recorded in Broadway Studios. The same studio Saturday Night Live is recorded at. 🎷🎺🥁🎹
Actually, SNL is taped at 30 Rock. Night Music was taped at EUE/Screen Gems in its first season, then Chelsea Television Studios for its second.
@@milesmorris9333Boardway Studios.
@@dalemcilwain You sure about that? Because I checked the closing credits of both seasons of Night Music. And everyone knows that SNL is taped at 30 Rock.
@@milesmorris9333I got the name of the studio wrong. Night Music & SNL were taped at the same studio at Rockefeller Center. Boardway Video provided the Production & Distribution of Night Music.
Just re-discovered these lost treasurers. I am so grateful for the posting of this music! I couldn't ask for a better lineup of artists. They are all favorites of mine, everyone. While only 2 years of musical segments were recorded (much more needed to cover the real music of the time) I appreciate what has been captured.
Patti Austin singing They Can't Take That Away From Me in B!!!!
TheWhollymoly Don't you have the album. She arranged that and does all the vocals on her #TheRealMe cd. Precious music! She sings #IGY on her tremendous cd #StreetofDreams. #PattiAustin
She is incredible.
I couldn't wait for this show every Sunday.
our father called u home hate ur gne but our father was ready for u.........so may u RIP..... Ur music lives on..
Donald;s wearing a Shawshank Prison shirt. I'm glad this song isn't what most people stopping by here expected to see. IGY is at 42:50 minuts but the whole show is worth a listen! Cheers tree people.
Just gorgeous..
I was addicted to this show. It was a drag because it was on Friday nights and we were always gigging
This is the treasure of music. I have watched this show. Micherof present !
Wowwwwww.....What an Awesome and Beautiful song by The Greatest Masters of Music 💯🙏💯
Sister Caroll👍
Remember the show well. Would come on at midnight. Great show. Always eclectic.
Extreme Pro! ❤Thank you for sharing! L G Majo Berlin
Now This is music
13:22 - I'd know Marcus Miller anywhere...and with Joe Sample...and Fagan...and Hakim...my God, they don't put this much musical talent in the same space anymore, it seems.
This was all star! Marcus Miller jamming back there too.
These are the best & greatest musicians in that day. Now, some are not with us.
One of the best uploads I have ever watched on this site. Thanks so, so much for posting!
Beautiful music. Really superb. But, as a Brit, I can only apologise for inflicting Jools on you Americans...
No worries, it's cool. 😎😎
