- Taking over his master’s workshop, Louis-François Cartier founded Cartier in 1847, amidst the subversive times of the ongoing French revolution. With the rise of the Second Empire, Cartier’s business grew over a decade, with the opening of the first Cartier boutique in 1859. Louis-François’ son Alfred then took over the business, moving it to the prestigious rue de la Paix in the jewelry district of Paris. Alfred’s own sons expanded the Cartier brand overseas, to London and New York.
Alfred’s third son remained behind in Paris to continue the growth of Cartier at home. His revolutionary ideas, such as using platinum in jewelry, earned Cartier the title of ‘Jeweller of Kings, King of Jewellers’ from King Edward VII. The celebrity endorsements didn’t stop there, with Louis’ friend Alberto Santos-Dumont commissioning a watch to wear while piloting his lighter-than-air dirigible. Santos-Dumont’s celebrity status made the wrist-worn watch, uncommon at the time, a must-have fashion accessory among men.
Louis’ death in 1942 brought about a sad time for Cartier. His ideas and imagination grew the brand into what it is today, but fortunately, it can be said that his passing did not mark the end of Cartier’s creative run. Thanks to the inspiration of Alain Dominique Perrin and Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier continued to flourish, introducing the almighty Panther-a symbol of Cartier-into the jewelry and watch line.
Still today Cartier continues to push boundaries and challenge perceptions with its Concept ID collection. Utilizing a completely transparent ceramic case sealed from the air to reduce resistance on moving parts, the Concept ID Two is a watch that could well have come from the future. Its titanium movement is manufactured with such precision that lubricating oils are no longer needed, and its fiberglass mainsprings and carbon crystal balance are resistant to magnetic fields. It’s a fine example of how this artisanal jeweler and watchmaker has continued to astound audiences for almost two centuries, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down.

If I was ever asked which I preferred, Cartier of Tiffany & Co. my answer would be Cartier every time. Their design skills were quite spectacular from the small Pale Pink Penguins to the more extravagant pieces made for Royalty and all in between, there was not a design that I did not adore. From the stunning Collections of Animals that appeared to be moving due to the placement of the Gems, to the Garden Pieces that looked so life-like that they could have just been brought in from a beautiful garden. Not to mention the most Majestic Items designed specifically for Royalty to Maharajas with every piece I viewed taking my breath away and leaving me in awe. Their unique designs that included everything from the simplistic to the most intricate of styles left me wanting more. From the incredible Crocodile Necklace to the Prancing Panthers, there is something for everyone. That is if you are one of the few who are able to be in the position to purchase such beauties. So, unfortunately, unless I have some long-lost relative around the world somewhere who has learnt of my desire for Fine Jewells and love of Jewellery, I will have to admire from afar. At least Andrew, I have all of your videos kept on a playlist to dream about. What I do so love about Cartier is that it is not only about presenting the largest of Gems, except in the cases of the obscenely wealthy and Royalty but it's the way in which each Gem, no matter what size, is used with absolute detail in the placement of a piece that could make or break the finished item. Constance Krischan You won't believe this but I was watching a documentary on UA-cam about the Fabergé Eggs the night before last! What a genius to create such wonders! I just wish they were all together and out of private hands so that we all can admire them in person. Imagine seeing all those eggs, apart from the missing ten but imagine them all together! I love the imagination just as much as the artistry. It's such a shame that we do not have anyone remotely like that or other greats in the field of the Arts anymore. One of my frustrations about modernization is that the creative spirit seems to have been lost and technology taken over. My decision in my comment was only between Cartier and Tiffany & Co. I'm not sure if I could choose just one but Fabergé and team were able to create pieces that were unlike anything that other artisans could even come close to!
