All my 'formative years' spent in Pomona CA I got to see the growth of hot rods and 1/4 mile speedsters. WinterNationals in Pomona every year and going to Grudge Night at Irwindale raceway. Good times.
They don't show you how many clutches exploded and flywheels came loose(!) But I and my brothers lived through it all...we got involved at the end of the Deuces and T buckets in the Late 50's After that it was more 50's/60's detroit cars with big engine swaps. Thing I would like to see is someone go to this nice "well regulated" strip and hand out live JATO bottles!!!....well, jus' thinking.....
Hot Rods are one thing. breaking traffic laws are somethling else. Watch as he makes a left turn from the stoplight from the right lane cutting in front of traffic. I think this "squirrel" should get a ticket.
Where is the drag strip still operating in Dade County? Miami-Hollywood has been closed about 30 years, and is gone now, and Moroso (PBIR) closed a couple of years ago.
@3:57 Is that thing on the front of the engine a mechanical drive for the tach? @4:08 What is he doing with that cutting torch? Quick and dirty weight reduction? On the left coast the word "mill" used in reference to an automobile always meant the engine. Some weird stuff in this one. Does look like early Fifties. Just a little over 10 years later was the heyday of showroom stock and super stock muscle cars.
I'm amazed at how narrow that strip is. That is like a normal two-lane road, and yet they are racing side by side. 5:56 Maybe someone from Miami back around that time remembers and can tell us where it was.

My right ear loves this video.
I've been a proud member of the Steeds Car Club since 1962. Perhaps we should change our name to the Squirrels Car Club.
Wow! That's too cool!
Or you could make a similar club video ?
I used to be a hot rod Galassi back in the'70s.
I used to live in Springhill, FL for awhile. Raced up and down route 19.

Coral Gables area had two "drag strips" one in west Pembroke Pines (apartment complex) and the other on the west side of Dade County (still operating)

Awesome video, the real story.
